Pocket Wifi and VPN to use in China?

Dear fellow Ozbargainers,

Me and my partner are going to China for 15 days and we're looking for the most efficient internet solution for both of us.

We're not planning to do massive downloads but would use the internet for general Social Media stuffs.

We'll be staying mostly in Shanghai, Xi'an and Xiangyang so it might be tricky to get a mobile provider that works across different provinces.

I'm also in the market for VPN for use back in Australia as well for downloads, region-free browsing etc.

I was just wondering, what would be the best pocket Wifi provider in China and any suggestion on how to combine it with a commercial VPN that we can enter into the pocket Wifi itself? I'm okay for paying yearly plan for the VPN as i will have good use of it after we return to Australia.

Any suggestions for other cost-effective solutions would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

  • Why aren't you using a VPN in Australia just out of curiosity?

    • I havent been downloading torrents and have resorted to using Premium. To for certain downloads. I also havent been downloading as much I used to and been using streaming services most of the time.

    • Well, some US websites/apps are blocked by the "Great firewall". But everyone can use youku, wechat, baidu without VPN.

      • What mobile provider did you use?

Is there one that can be used across the provinces without incurring significant roaming charges?

        • China Unicom (public company) but I forgot how much I paid. China telecom (public company) is like Telstra.
I don't know if it's the cheapest but they have stores everywhere. Of course, you will be affected by the great firewall.

        • @jutsu:

When you were there last time, did you stay in the same province?

  • I use a vodafone red in a huawei 5573 when in china (6-8 times a year) nothing blocked and works a treat.

If you want a reliable connection I'd be doing that and not rely on China/VPNs

    • Do you mean the $5 a day roaming SIM? Or a locally bought Chinese Voda SIM

    • Hmmm… interesting…

So are you saying that using Vodafone Red, you get pretty much the same internet access as in Australia?

Too bad that they dont have prepaid. The cheapest ive seen is a sim only month-to-month which is $35 excluding the daily $5 on top of that?

      • Yep that's exactly what I'm saying - Have been doing this for 2 years.

I've gone down the local sim card path but much prefer to go with Vodafone for this reason
