Arc Welder 100A $59.95, General Purpose Thinners- 4lt $9.99 @ SuperCheapAuto (SCA Club Membership Required - Free)

160

Cheap welder for small jobs around the house. I used one to build my electric gate, attach new feet to a park bench and weld a new door frame on to my shed.

$59.95.

Is this product for you?

For professionals or DIY welders who are commonly welding thicker metals, an arc welder such as the SCA 100AMP ARC Welder may be just the right tool. This welder can weld between 2-4mm thick and can be adjusted via the variable amperage setting. An Arc welder uses a fixed electrode rod which is covered in flux, thus creating a shield from impurities caused by regular atmosphere when welding. This can make an arc welder much more suitable for outdoor work than a typical gasless Mig.

Great for light welding of 2 - 4mm plate
Variable amperage setting
Fan cooled
15% duty cycle

SCA General Purpose Thinner- 4 Litre
website says $26.99 each but in the flyer I saw today in store it said $9.99

4 Litre
Suitable for thinning most single pack primers, primer fillers & spray putties
Ideal for cleaning spray equipment & paint brushes

Always wanted a welder, not sure yet what for but would be good to have around.

Make sure you get a mask

      • Cheapest automatic mask I can find with a quick search is $50 at Total Tools.
        http://www.totaltools.com.au/hrd-welding-helmet-hrdfs450/i13…

Are cheap masks okay, or is there a definite advantage in buying brand-name?

        • I want a welder too but I don't know why. Kinda funny the mask costs nearly as much as the welder.

the cheap auto-darkening ones can be a bit slow, I find I need to manually blink as I strike the arc, to avoid getting a bright flash that takes a couple of seconds for my eyes to re-adjust after.

I'd suggest just get a cheap flip-down, fixed mask to start out with. Should be < $20 https://www.bunnings.com.au/ozito-welding-helmet_p6290047 ($11 on ebay from China). Most cheap welders come with a 'starter kit' that includes a mask, chipping hammer and maybe a wire brush.

        • @effgee: a semi decent autodarkener mask will have a flash adjustment/switch for sensitivity.

        • @altomic:

          Thanks.
Mine is maybe 12-15 years old. It only has a darkness setting. I'm not doing enough welding atm to justify buying a better one.

      • Any recommendations?

my strong recommendation (at 50% off) is this mask which is AU $21.56 shipped from aus

          it's autodarkening.

I find these invaluable for the new welderperson.

using a flipdown (when you haven't had much welding experience) can be fiddly as you have to line up the rod, flip down the mask and then you can't see the rod until it starts arcing and then some how it has moved and you're welding your knee to the metal :(

          @altomic:

Good advice, thb I own a fixed mask but have never used it, I just keep it so kids can observe if they're interested.
I didn't realise how cheap masks have got…I think you just cost me $22 :)

Have you actually used the mask you linked ?
Can someone vouch that its OK from direct experience ?

[edit] hope their quality is better than their spelling; on the sid eof the helmet is says "use this welmet only lof fae and eye protection"
[edit2] actually less excited now, "Delay Time: 0.1s to 1.5s". I suspect 0.1s is still too slow; who the hell wants to watch an arc for that long ?

        • @effgee: I haven't used that exact one. my mask has 2 dials on the inside .(no external dial). I find it perfect - I switched the delay to minimum. I'm only doing one type of welding - arc. so a basic mask is all that is required. no need to misweld or not use a mask and bake my retinas.

        • @effgee:

who the hell wants to watch an arc for that long?

The Ebay listing also says "Response time is less than 1/30000s", so maybe the "delay time" is how long it waits before changing from dark to clear?

        • @Russ: Yes and it also states: "automatically change screen will turn dark in 0.1 millisecond". I believe 0.1 milliseconds is 1/10000 not 1/30000 - still faster than 0.1 seconds.

Went to bunnings Mascot today and came across a 140amp Ross Arc Inverter welder - $50 down from $129/$100/$99 (see image). Any ideas how it compares?

  • I had this welder, ended up returning as hasnt got cooling…even 15% duty cycle, we have to wait 10 mins to cool it down after 2-3 mins of job.
