Scratched Front Bumper of Mazda 3 - Self Repair or Use Professionals

Hey everyone,

When reversing out of my garage, I turned slightly to avoid my side-mirror from hitting a pillar, and accidentally scraped the front left bonnet against a brick pillar instead.

I have no experience with scratch repairs, and since this is my first one, I have no idea how much it might cost. So bearing that in mind, what do you think is the best option for me, and what would the cost of it be?

  • 1) Find and watch a tutorial, buy own supplies and try fix it myself
  • 2) Get some quotes from professional car repairers

Also if anyone located in Perth is able to fix this please hit me up with a quote, hoping to get it resolved soon.

Thanks for your advice :)

Could probably try out sheer white nail polish. Buy a good brand like MAC. no crappy cheap ones

  • I'd do it myself.
work on the smallest area possible.
file/sand down any roughness, then light scuffing with very fine paper i.e. 1200 wet'n'dry.
buy a can of correct colour code touch up in a spray can (from supercrap etc).
lots of old sheets over the car so no overspray.
mask off the area but make sure don't spray right up to masking tape or else there will be an edge.
many light dusting coats of paint to avoid runs.
    polish up.

it won't look like new, but if you are contemplating doing it yourself as a first timer, then you can't be looking for a grade A finish.

what is remainder of car like?

use this, pretty easy to do and gets the job done decent enough.

  • It appears to be the latest Mazda 3 model, so ranging from a 2015 model onwards? If so, it's a fairly new car and I would advice to get a professional to do the work.

If it was an older car, then maybe DIY

  • Thanks for your advice everyone. After speaking with staff at Supercheap Auto, they also thought the deeper scratches would need professional attention to fix. I'll source quotes and get it fixed that way.

@sandp and @popcornready, yes it's a 2015 model and the rest of the body is in good condition.

    • Since it's quite new just go pro mate. At least it will look like it hasn't been in an accident and won't pose an issue when it comes to selling

  • UPDATE: I went with The Touchup Guys and they repaired it same-day at my house for $330.
