Check eBay for used. Plus with that current $10 coupon (if you're able to get it) then possible bargains. I recently bought some 128gb m.2 ssds for ~$28 a piece. Had to spend another $3 on a caddy but…

    • I've done the exact same for 3x separate PCs - M.2 SATA drives, $55 for 128Gb, plus maybe $5 or so for adapters/caddies.

It also required learning the fine differences between mSATA, M.2, and the 'micro SATA' for 1.8" drives that my laptop used. And THEN ensuring the physical size of the new drive was small enough to squeeze in with the adapter installed.

They were 'used', but most likely factory specc'd upgrades and they had excess stock of the smaller drives. Cheapest I spotted was here: $45 for 128Gb mSATA.

      • Here is a pic of the inside it's an Acer 5920g https://ibb.co/mPScrQ will that thing slide straight in or do I need an adaptor/cradle or something? Also how does it compare with the ones I linked the crucial and lite-on? Cheers.

You'll need an adapter. If you're happy to wait then grab it from aliexpress. 4-6 delivery. The m.2 ssd drives can be quite small. As switchblade88 says - there are a lot of different variations of connections e.g. m.2 , 5+12 pin, etc.

Unfortunately the cheap 128gb ssds were some weird special pricing. (I'm expecting them next week).

        • That laptop is 10 YEARS OLD. Reviews are from 2007!

Yes, an SSD will definitely help. But perhaps it's time to find an alternative? Assuming that you're not actually gaming on that vintage thing, then perhaps a Chromebook would be a worthwhile investment.

I'm running an Acer Chromebook R11:
          - 10hrs battery
          - SSD
          - touchscreen
          - tablet mode
          - FAST
          - cheap. I paid $440.

Given that you're looking at $60-odd for an SSD, then that leaves "$380 of value" for a new (brighter/clearer/touch) screen, USB3.0, 5x the battery life, and not to mention the speed boost.

        • @Switchblade88: Cheers for the advice but why would I fork out $$$ to upgrade when I only need a hard drive? I don't game just sit here and browse OB :) I don't care how old things are as long as they do the job. This thing is doing ok when it dies I will purchase another cheap dual core and swap out the drive! Win, money in my pocket for bargains :)

Edit.. forgot to mention its running linux BIG difference!!

          @figarow:

If you're satisfied with it, then an SSD will indeed be your best option. Just don't want to bypass all your alternatives :)

I deal with that kind of old tech regularly - heck, there was one laptop I killed, then revived a solid 5-6 times (HDD, then RAM, then battery, keyboard, screen) where it became a permanent docked PC before giving up the ghost eventually.

At that point I'd already acquired a new laptop, so whilst the old one was still in circulation, I had still sated my appetite for harder/better/faster/stronger in the meantime and repurposed the original.
