    Bricks for sale? Or doorstops?

    http://www.techradar.com/reviews/pc-mac/tablets/microsoft-su…

Was $200AUD 4 years ago, so you can imagine how good this device is

  • -1

Maybe good for elderly parents, surely can't be any viruses?

    • +6

No viruses on a slate tablet and chalk either

    • better off with a cheap Android tablet.

  • +3

RT isn't that already obsolete with no more support from MS whatsoever?

  • So to educate nobodies out here before they jump buy and then later crying in here, please OP confirm this is not a normal Windows tablet, and also what are the pros and cons?

  • Surface 1 RT

  • +1

    read da article

Why I won't be buying a Surface RT, even for $349

    https://www.cnet.com/au/news/why-i-wont-be-buying-a-surface-…

  • +7

Not only is this not a normal tablet, it's useless, outdated. I'm amazed that OzSale was able to find Brand new product to sell. I imagine they found where retailers buried them in the desert and dug them up.

    • +2

think they were trying to find WMDs but found this instead. not sure which is worse………

  • I had a Surface 1 RT when they first were released. Very average product back then. Heavy and the batter life sucked. Hardly any decent apps for RT. I would not want one these days.

    Give one to your enemy.

    • +1

The RT is about 6 years old so yes a 6 years old technology with no apps worse than Lumia phones.
And they want 199 plus they want you to buy a charger separate. They must think you were born yesterday even the plastic Pendos at Post Office all run Windows 10.

  • +3

For the kids to not do anything with it?

    • get your kids the Pendos at least we know it is a stupid brand.

  • I still use it for web browsing sometimes, and it still gets windows updates. It does not play vedio well. It is good for some light users at this price.

    • +7

as you say they do not play vedio well We need one that plays vedio.

      • Vedios are vewy important.

        • +1

          You guys are 'wierdos' ;p

  • lolololol, Windows RT

    • +2

Windows ReTardis it's bigger then you think & you can go back in time just by having it!

  • +3

I've got the Asus equivalent - the Transformer TF-600 with Win RT. It is the machine I use to ground my kids with. Since they cant do jack sh!t on it, they can only use it for homework and limited to what I give them. hahaha.. They dont like it, but its impossible to totally ground them from computers these days give most of the homework is done on it.

    • It has a browser. Hence many non boring things.

      • A not-very compliant browser (IE) that doesnt work with majority of the rich content (HTML5) nor Java :)
Plus Internet is controlled at home by moi.. He cant do much if I enforce it.. hehe

  • +2

I bought one of these when they first came out. It was good in its day. Now the WiFi on it only connects to older WiFi systems and it cannot be updated.

I would be very careful if you are considering buying one of these.

  • So with all the less than glowing comments here, I wont even bother looking at the specs on this. Not something ANYone would want by the sound of it

  • +1

In the surface's defence, it has a normal USB port. And an attachable keyboard. Micro SD card too. And a full featured Microsoft office. Oh before anyone says anything about the atom notebooks, the screen on the 2nd rt is amazing, not your crappy 'hd' quality.

Not sure if this is the original rt or the 2nd one, but the 2nd one is not as bad as some people think. Sure there are no apps (literally), but its good enough for a work only notebook. It's light weight, ok battery life too.

If you need low budget notebook, this is great. If you need your apps. Stay away.

If this is the original rt, then stay away too.

    • Thanks, i'm looking for a cheap tab. You don't own that X80 by any chance? It's $122 on special at Banggood but most of the reviews state poor wifi

      • All Chinese tablets have very poor wifi. Don't waste your time with them.

      • sry i dont own. i did order a chuwi hibook pro 64 for my dad. will see how that turns out

also that's the normal price i think. they are always on 'special'

i noticed theres an even cheaper X80. http://www.banggood.com/Teclast-X80-Pro-32GB-Intel-Z8350-Qua… wonder whats the difference

        • Thanks guys. Sorry yes that's the price I meant.

Just after a cheap travel tablet to replace the piece of crap I have already

  • no idea if its a deal or not but not having a power supply on the 64GB model is pretty poor - or do you charge them with a phone charger?

    • propriety connector so makes the unit useless

      • Really, that sucks if you don't get a charger then.

  • Very bad platform. It's super dead. We have a Surface 2 and it's in such a sad state, which is a pity because the hardware was pretty good for its time.
Better to get a Chinese Windows 10 tablet.

  • i brought the tr when it was marked down @ harvey norman (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/124568). founded it was alright but there was very little software available from the app store. It developed a power issue and had it replaced with the RT2 64bg which ran much faster and had a HD screen.

If you like browsing the internet and watching movies (mine you, you need to buy the movie app to run MP4/avi files) then the RT is for you, but not @ 200$

    • There is VLC for surface rt, free and can play any vedio format.

  • RIP OFF

  • +2

I feel sorry for that poor bugga that sees… Windows Surface for just $149??? Buy buy buy. Then they realise it's $149 of regret.

    Ozsale… Shame Shame Shame

    • that is the OzSale way though, they pray on idiots.

I got the MRS some CK underwear and the sizes were all wrong, we took it into an actual CK store and they said they are parallel imports from asians countries were the sizes are made alot smaller.
Never will buy from them again.

  • I am not a tech guru but I purchased a surface rt2 or whatever it was called from jb when they were on run outs.

The app or lack of apps was atrocious. It hangs and freezes with the genuine keyboard when doing emails or browsing. Due to this I couldn't writ emails without pulling my hair out. The hanging made browsing near unbearable

Battery life and size are fine.

We now use it for videos on plane trips only.

Such a pity. On paper it was such a good machine.

The latest surfaces apparently are good but at 1k plus. No thanks for my uses

  • I drank the kool-aid and bought one of these when they came out….. It was OK for a while as I just wanted it for browsing and emails, but it slowly turned into a streaming pile of rubbish.

I use it for the kids videos on car trips these days, which is good when I can get the video to actually start, but the whole thing is terrible and if anyone is thinking of getting one I strongly advise against it.

Bought a surface pro 3 after and it's still going strong. Much better.

  • Merged from Microsoft Surface RT 32 GB $149, Surface RT 64 GB (No Power Supply) $199, Power Supply $22 etc. @ OzSale

(Edit) Looks like this is a dupe of this deal posted few weeks ago.

I don't know why previous post didn't highlight this, but OzSale also have Microsoft Surface RT (yes, that's the original Microsoft Surface released in 2012) on sale in the same deal for laughable price.

Microsoft Surface RT 32 GB with power supply: $149
Microsoft Surface RT 64 GB WITHOUT power supply: $199
    Power supply: $22
Matching Touch covers, black or white: $25
Matching Type 2 covers, black, magenta, or purple: $25

Product descriptions claim: "This is a Brand New product NOT in original retail packaging"

Note that some product images are mixed up on covers.
Also note that standard delivery is $10 on top of that, unless you can find an item from a "free shipping" sale on OzSale like this one. If you add at least one item from a "free shipping" sale to your order, the whole order will qualify for free shipping immediately.

Also make sure you understand this is Surface RT, it runs a stripped down ARM-compiled version of Windows 8, which is designed to only run Metro style applications from Windows store. And Microsoft Office 2013, of course, which comes bundled with every unit.

Over the years Microsoft released numerous updates for Windows RT, so it's not completely abandoned. Not to mention a dedicated XDA community that doesn't seem to be giving up on this device just yet.

At this price point I would consider original Surface a rival to netbooks and chromebooks, but I got one RT + Type cover just out of curiosity, as I have never owned a Surface before. For $149 + $25 for presumable brand new units it's a no brainer, I would say.

    • +3

Microsoft Surface RT 32 GB $149, Surface RT 64 GB (No Power Supply) $199

      these are 4 years old.
      not worth it.

      • I've seen YouTube reviews, they are quite snappy little units.
As a low maintenance Skype machine for mom, for example :) doesn't get viruses, they say.
        But each to his own

    • That's because it would be a dupe
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/303297

      • updated, thanks

    • I bought from them a wireless Xbox controller (previous ozb deal). I never achieved to have it detected by the receiver. Not sure if I should return it or try longer/harder…

    • +1

Lot of stuff from previous posts hasn't shipped yet. Repeat sales with no delivery suspicious for me.

    • +1

I still use my Surface RT and it runs videos and a bit or internet browsing just fine. All i really need it for!

    • $12 for the official Display Port to HDMI adapter is a good price. Compatible with the latest Surface as well:
      https://www.ozsale.com.au/product.aspx?cid=10&saleID=gKYz-KI…

    • Definitely a no brainer, buying one that is……..

      • well, I haven't bought anything "tech" I couldn't sell for at least %75 of the cost later on. world is full of no-brainers, it seems :) and if you ask me, shelling out $1k for a mobile phone must take some brain, obviously :) which is why big brands manage to make money in the end. me, I would buy something from a big brand only when it's available for a fraction of the cost, like this case here. If I don't like it, I'll resell it.

    • wonder if plex will work on these RTs?

    • The surface RT is terrible. Had one that got stuck in a permanent bootloop and all attempts to reinstall the OS would not work.

    • Do the Type 2 keyboards run over Bluetooth or so they connect to the Surface through physical connection?

      • physical

  • +1

received mine last week. managed to beat the price down $30 more, ended up getting 32 GB plus type cover for $145.

no idea why people hate it, so far. typing is great, outlook gets my work mail before my phone does, remote desktop is comfortable, screen is great.

oh well, haters gonna hate, like they say.
