Budget 9 or 10 " Tablet

Our iPad 2 is on it's last legs. We're dinosaurs so I'm not up to rooting something! It needs to be fast and able to download apps from the Playstore as Bruce likes to read the SMH daily. Also check email and browse the internet. Storage and camera are not important. Our budget is $200 but will go to $300 if necessary.
Thanks in advance.

  • ha! i just sold my ipad 2 this afternoon and now hunting for a budget android tablet for my little kid.

have been looking at samsung galaxy tab A 8" which seems to be quite alright and sells around $200 on ebay. I havent make my decision yet, keen to hear other people's opinion.

    Get the 10". More screen

I personally wouldn't go lower than a Xiaomi Mi Pad 1, Nexus 9, Samsung Galaxy Tab S1 unless you really like the price tag in which case your first suggestion should be fine.

If you can budget for it I would highly recommend a $300 USD or $400 AUD plus shipping Huawei Mediapad M3 8.4" or Asus Zenpad 3S 10 9.7" from www.amazon.com (i got the former 3 months ago because the Asus wasn't shipping to my address back then and it is great) both come with strong processors 4gb ram a 2k screen and micro sd expandability which you will need if you want to future proof it as apps take up a lot of storage and background memory now (i am looking at you Facebook and messenger for memory usage) and there is more content coming out in 1440p everyday.

If I could choose again I would get the Asus but anyways you can't dwell back on the past.

2gb ram doesn't cut it anymore unless you are doing very simple small usage tasks or one task at a time then it's little brothers the Huawei Mediapad M2, Asus Zenpad S 8, Xiaomi Mi Pad, Nexus 9, Samsung Galaxy Tab S1 should be fine for you at roughly half the price or less even if you can get it second-hand on eBay or gumtree or the Ozbargain buy and sell classifieds.

Check www.gumtree.com.au really good prices just watch out for the defective and damaged models (broken screen/swollen battery/failed attempt at root) not worth it unless you know somebody who can easily and cheaply repair it.. minor scratches are usually ok as long as they aren't too obstructing or distracting.

www.eBay.com.Au is also very good, usually better pricing and better state of condition but as always double check the seller and try establish good communication.

Would be your best deal imho. Some going from $200 but most $300 AUD.

But check this website out.. https://www.asus.com/Tablets/ASUS-ZenPad-3S-10-Z500M/

You drooling yet? Yeah it's good.

    • The zenpad and the mediapad each has some features that the other doesn't. According to user ratings, users are much happier with the Mediapad

      http://www.phonearena.com/phones/compare/Huawei-MediaPad-M3,…

      • Yeah the mediapad is really good (I own one) but the only thing the Asus has that made me slightly interested in it was bigger screen size / bigger storage / game genie app (which I would use heavily as I game a lot on my tablet and the ability to search stuff up in app is invaluable) the game streaming part to YouTube maybe not so much as my upload speed is currently terrible only 100 kilobytes / per second max.

As for the gpu I haven't checked yet which is better but I would assume they would be in the same ball park.

        But yeah:

        8.4" vs 9.7"
        32gb vs 64gb.
No game genie vs yes game genie

Otherwise the mediapad does have some nice features such as screen recording / Tablet manager cleaning and optimizing app / screen shot scroll shot / mirror share / a few others such as a floating dock or app that gives you access to a bunch of buttons all in one place but not that much tbh

Their memory and cpu task manager leaves a lot to be desired and their volume control is a little bit non sensitive with the lowest setting still being pretty high (but I fixed this with third party apps)

Compared to others like nVidia and Samsung etc they could still incorporate a lot more handy features like game streaming and proper editing and recording. Also their keyboard compared to Samsung's touch wiz is very very bad imho.. poorer dictionary recognition and Swype accuracy compared to say my very old (six years to be exact) Samsung Galaxy Tab GT-P7510 the keyboard using Swype is just ten times better at recognizing what words I wanted and paths I had chosen the programming and user quality testing was just very top notch but Samsung is the biggest player in the market so for that I can't really bang on them that much..they are doing and offering very well products for their price brackets so as a budget enthusiast but top hunter forgood quality I can't really say nothing bad much.

Wish I was a tech reviewer haha lol with my own website. Then I could maybe get some of these cool gadgets and toys for free haha lol.

Need more benchmark stuff on important overlooked data sometimes like volume ranges/cpu gpu memory storage benchmarks versus actual competitors and etc some get it right others miss valuable tidbits.

    • hey any idea if there is international warranty for an import Zenpad S3 10? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M3MYPOO?th=1

      • No idea but I hope so.. tbh I wasn't really planning on it.. warranty is still pretty iffy to me personally.. yeah I'm weird hah lol

Get the 10" Lenovo. (Anyone that reads the SMH daily definitely needs some advice. e.g. get the Tele).

    • I like the extra battery life and water resistance but it's only 3GB RAM and half as much ROM. hmmm. It's a hard choice between the three suggested.

    • Another drawback on the Lenovo is that cylindrical part along the bottom. It's not gonna fit in my tablet stand with that thing.

  • This Teca branded tablet from Hong Kong has comparable specs to the tablets suggested above but at $296 shipped, falls within your price range.

  • Thanks everyone for your input. I ended up getting the 10" Lenovo Tab 2 which he seems happy with. Paid $187 from Bing Lee but of course today they have 15% off, so has come down to $167. Ugh!

  • I decided to go with this one for $112 shipped:
