Has anyone experienced treatment on OzBargain like this?

This is regarding the 'Has anyone experienced treatment from Costco like this?' thread and — to a lesser extent — all the other threads where people indulge in a distressed ramble about their latest in a series of life crises.

Why has the Ozbargain community become so fickle as to unanimously portion out undeserved abuse in one thread, while giving away money to someone claiming they've broken their TV in another thread?

Usually there's a mix of discussion, jokes, criticism, and support that together highlight the absurdity of people's problems in a (as I see it) good natured way. It's not always evenly distributed and I'm sure everyone has noticed that how a post is written contributes to that. So what attracts scorn, and what attracts free money?

One broke Costco's rules, the other their TV.

But the OP is rabbiting on about "Has anyone experienced treatment from Costo like this"

      Who is Costo?

      Is it Franco Cozzo?

I think I need some KFC (and probably some Chicken too).

    • I wonder what will happen if I break an eneloop….

      INB4UKNOW…

Hello fellow Ozbargainers, On the 11th of June, I went to admire my famous eneloop collection however upon examining my 600th eneloop I accidentally tripped and stepped on my eneloop causing it to break. I am absolutely devasted by this event, which has already impacted me in many ways. I am now having trouble brodening deals(especially eneloops) and I am already planning when and where to bury my faitful 600th eneloop.

      Regards, Broden
      R.I.P 600th Eneloop,
      It's been nice knowing you

PM if you know any deals on Funeral Services

      • Cool story bro

Costco are coming down hard on non-members going into their store to buy cheap hot food/pizza. I work in Docklands and have done it myself once. The second time I tried, they asked me for the card and told me only members are allowed. I can understand it's a business and they are offering cheap food for their cardholders. Someone working at the entrance of Costco would have had to stop multiple people trying to get in the store without a card on any given day. I still don't agree with them being abusive to anyone and I wasn't there so won't make a call on what happened to the lady who got verbally abused.

The guy who broke his TV seemed genuine and was trying to reach out to this community for advice on what to do. He didn't ask for money in his original post and probably didn't know what to do other than ask strangers. I don't know if he is lying or not but I sent him $20 to help out. I hope he raises enough money to buy a better TV.

      I missed it, which thread?

The second time I tried, they asked me for the card and told me only members are allowed.

Fun fact: in the US (Michigan specifically), you are allowed in to the Costco (and Sam's Club <- Walmart version) without a membership in order to buy booze. This is a loophole in the law there because you are not allowed to sell liquor exclusively to people who only have memberships. So if asked at the front for your card, you can just say you are there to buy booze.

I also don't really understand the whole show the card thing on entry, don't you need to show the card when purchasing something anyway?

The Ozbargain community can be capricious and people need to understand they post at their own risk. I suspect some of the members think Fox News is fair and balanced, that Andrew Bolte has anything useful to say and that it is damn shame they gave women the vote. Then there are others that are genuinely amusing and helpful - so you roll the dice and see what you get. If you are posting do not expect any sympathy as the pack mentality can apply. It can be bad enough in the deal postings - where some people tend to forget that others are doing them a favour by going to the effort of posting deals - the forums can be brutal. If it all gets too obnoxious then just back out of a posting. Like the iris in "Star Gate" after a while the posters stop hurling themselves against the gate. Just mark them as read and then move on.

    • Women can vote nowadays?

      • +1

        that actually made me LOL.

However, the timeline can be a bit sobering.

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_women%27s_suffrage

"In Europe, the last jurisdiction to grant women the right to vote was the Swiss canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden, in 1991. Women in Switzerland obtained the right to vote at federal level in 1971,[5] and at local cantonal level between 1959 and 1991,[6][7] see Women's suffrage in Switzerland." - I mean seriously!

        • Acceptance of women voting boosted significantly due to World War I when millions of women performed traditionally male jobs.

People who blame everyone but themselves and refuse to take any responsibility for the role their own actions play, are the ones that attract scorn.
I like to think that there is far more good in most people than there is evil. It makes people feel good to help others.
As someone who has suffered from depression myself, life can be shit sometimes, when someone is down it really isn't ok to kick them,

    • +12

This. I thought it was incredibly brave of the guy who broke his TV to disclose he had depression as well as admit he made a mistake, and reached out and asked for help the only way he knew how. Men have the highest suicide rate, let's not contribute to that.

It is also not OK to encourage people being yelled at and abused. This site does have a number of people who, being charitable, are insensitve - being more accurate are bullies. This is not the majority but it is a vocal minority who then attract a pack following. I use this site, but I always brace myself when I post waiting for the negative responses. I think you are being very simplistic if you think it is only the people who don't take responsibilities for their actions that attract scorn on this site. There is a way to point out to people that their actions may not be optimal without abusing them; maybe a more lateral way of approaching the situation is warrranted by some contributers.

The OZB community is great on one hand, extremely funny and witty at time and pretty knowledgeable, then on the other hand it is extremely sexist, racist, anti-science, and generally completely bonkers when a property thread is started…

But you know, a lot of internet forums have their issues, but we love them anyway…

    • +1

Exactly it's not like it's Whirlpool!

  • +8

Ozbargain is full of self righteous knobs.

    • Hey this is not a confessional…

  • +6

So many whiny and LMGTFY threads recently.

  • OzB is evolving from sanitised "shopping club" to a fairer representation of society as membership increases.
This topic also questioned perceived changes in members' attitudes by 2010. The answer is always "Yes, however…"

  • +3

I was appalled at the Costco thread. It certainly put me off ever starting a thread on here.
Although I am not 100% with if you don't have anything nice to say, saynothing at all, some of those comments should never have seen the light of day.

    • +2

Don't be put off. There are always cynics, trolls, keyboard warriors etc. on any forums (or online in general).

Ozb is free, anyone can create an/multiple account(s). The thing that differentiates one commenter/person to the next is how one writes. If you tread on here long enough you will realise the regular names who truly contribute and offer informative and helpful advice. Even the notorious BIG commenter JV who has more negs than positive votes has his place here. We LIKE him for who he is 😇.

But do keep in mind what Ozbargain is really about. It isn't Whirlpool or Quora.

If you don't have anything nice to say, say nothing at all - Sure, but in this day and age, it's if you don't like what you read, move on.

    • +1

Those self righteous, white knights, costco defenders/warriors? I got burned (other costco thread) yesterday by these people. But hey, it's internet, just ignore those silly buggers LOL.

  • +6

Next time y'all gotta show your Ozbargain membership before commenting.

  • Where's the Costco thread? I can't really make an informed comment if I don't read the full thread. I remember seeing the TV thread but I didn't read it.

      That's the Costco thread.

I thought the reason why the huge backlash for the Costco thread was simply because most Ozbargainers would identify themselves with the doorperson as they/we probably see people like the OP in that thread all the time in our everyday work.

      • Thanks for the link.
