How to stream 4k content from PC to projector?

Hi all,

As per title, how do I stream 4k movie files from my PC to my projector in the other room? I typically use videostream premium & chromecast 2 to stream 1080p content to my HDTV. How would I do that for my projector setup?

This is my setup:
Projector: Epson TW9300
AVR: Yamaha RX-V681
Router: Asus RT-AC68U

I presume I would just need Chromecast Ultra? Or is there any other better ways?

Thanks!

  • Projector has a hdmi input?

    • Input: Digital 2 x HDMI (1 x HDCP2.2)
      Input: Computer 1 x D-sub 15-pin (RGB)
      Input: Opt. HDMI 1 x USB A
      Input: Control 1 x RS232c
      Input: Network I/O 1 x RJ45, 1 x USB Type A (for optional Wireless LAN unit)
      Trigger Out 3.5 mm mini-jack

Haven't actually receive the projector yet, to be installed next week. Guess I would be using 1x HDCP2.2 port to connect to my AVR

  • Where do you download/stream 4K movies? My Mac mini is attached to my projector by a hdmi cable.

    • Well, from torrent site.. :P They're mainly in my external HDD.

Wonder if I could just plug in external HDD to my AVR, and just stream from there?

      • It should work as it is a relatively new receiver.

I assume the files will be MKV but not sure due to it being torrent file, if it is "true" 4K compressed or even have the 5.1+ HT channels embedded.

So you may not be getting a "true" cinematic affect. Not that your paying for it LOL.

I am not sure if it can handle the dedicated current need to run the HDD but it's worth to try.

If that doesn't work then transfer a file to USB and try that.

You have nothing to lose here.

        Cheers

  • What graphics card is on your PC? Is it GTX970 or above?

    • Nah, just AMD HD7800 series.. didn't bother with gaming on my PC long time ago haha.

      • Yeah, your card is inadequate to render 4K @ 60p but might be OK to render that @ 24p.

The later cards (Such as the GTX970) has the capability of rendering 4K 4:4:4 @ 60p, HDMI2.0a and HDCP 2.2 (TBC) as I believe that your projector will work "better" with this card or higher.

However your projector is not true 4K :-)

So maybe not too much of a big deal.

        Cheers

How do you actually propose me to stream the content anyway, PC > Receiver > Projector? Wouldn't the receiver do the processing, not the PC? I just have my files saved in the internal HDD of my PC.

        • @Droid11:
PC HDMI out from graphics -> HDMI in to the receiver (You select what input; BD, DVD, etc) -> HDMI out to projector HDMI in.

Windows will be displayed on your projector like a giant monitor.

The receiver will bypass or upscale the image but will output sound to speakers.

One thing to note is that the movies are playing from the PC hence need access to the PC to control the player eg VLC, Win Media Player etc.

@vinni9284: You got my situation wrong mate. My PC is in another room, so it's not possible to connect directly to projector, plus my projector is mounted on the ceiling, but I see what you mean..

          @Droid11:

I only read your previous question but I can see that you have mentioned this in the title.

Then another alternative is to create a Multi-media network on your PC by enabling "Multimedia Streaming" via Control Panel (Assume you have Windows machine). Please Google how to do it

The PC has to be connected to the network (Wired LAN is more preferred)and is always turned ON when you stream.

The Yamaha receiver must be connected to the network as well however it has to have HDMI out to Projector HDMI in.

Then you can use your Yamaha app on your phone to control to access your PC folder (selecting Media Server on your app or called something similar) It will search your PC network and access your Multimedia files/folders.

Not sure if the stream will be 4K though.

          Cheers

with your situation you should be getting Epson TW9300W which has wireless transmission facility. Most of the blu-ray players will have USB connection get one and hook it up with HDMI to enjoy 4k content.

by the way how is TW9300.. I'm thinking to get 8300. any suggestions?

I have the predecessor the EH-TW9200W with the wireless feature and I would say that it is not worth the extra cash to buy.

The reason I bought the Wireless feature as I got it for the same price as the wired projector.

The wifi emitter has to be DIRECTLY in view of the projector and even so, the signal drops out at times. I am not sure if it is a warranty issue but I am not going to dismount the whole projector/connections and the like and return the whole thing over a wifi dropout.

Here is a scenario, you are watching a movie, you get to a good part, the signal drops out and for it to reconnect, it takes about a minute.
      Ultimately, it is frustrating.

A WIRED connection is always going to ensure that you get the best bandwidth as there are less chances of signal interference.

Having said this, I love the projector and use it every day as a TV. It's awesome! Watching sport on a 120" TV. You can't get that on a $6K 65" OLED (although that is an awesome TV too)

The great thing is that Epson has a 3 year projector and globe warranty where others have more warranty on the projector and less on the globe.

The 9300 is the upgrade so I would say it would be better.

I would advise you to shop around (not only Harvey Norman as they offer exorbitant prices) and go to AV/Hifi shops and haggle.

At my time, the 8200 was $3299 @ HN and I purchased the better 9200 for $2800 at a respectable AV joint.
Ironically, Gumtree sellers are still asking for one of these for nearly my brand new purchasing price second hand and used for at least over a year LOL.

So if I were you, aim for the 9300 and keep shopping around.

      Cheers

      • Thanks mate. Definitely consider to aim for 9300.

        https://www.homecinemacentral.com.au/benq-w8000-vs-epson-eh-…

is it true? I mean worth comparing Benq W8000 ? Since you own it and had some experience any advice is greatly appreciate.

        • The BenQ is also a good projector as I have one of those as well in another room.
However it is one of the older units now. The cheaper W1070; and having said that, it is pretty good too.

However I cannot comment much on that review considering that they are both rated similarly.

That being said, they are priced the same.
The BenQ warranty is not very clear or accessible. Some sites claim "upgraded" to 3 years however you need to search. Is the 3 year warranty they claim ALSO including the globe??? Not sure!

However the Epson is clear with their warranty.
          3 years, unit & globe.

          http://www.epson.com.au/warranty/projector_3Y3Y.asp

Don't go by one review, go with many different reviews.

Then go to a place that sells them both and compare

The catch is ask them to turn the light on inside the room and see how they both look (for me it was required as I use the 9200 in a room that has more lighting). Ensure that they have the same movie playing via their switchable HDMI system.

If they are selling $4K+ projectors, then I am sure that the will have a good setup. That is a good AV receiver, speakers and the like to cater for Atmos, DTS:X and the like to compliment the projector.

Read other reviews of the BenQ and they don't stack up as good as the Epson.

Considering the price is similar, go for the Epson IMHO and you wont look back.

          Cheers
