Netflix Increases Plan Prices from Today. Also Stan Has a Price Increase

From today Netflix is increasing the price of their plans, will it change how you use the service?

I downgraded from standard to basic this month, mainly because I hadn't stocked up on iTunes credit back when Kmart had 25%. Also having Netflix, Stan and Foxtel Now means that I don't need concurrent streams for each of the services as each person in my family can find something else to watch on another service.

I also noticed today that Stan has created a new Basic plan for $10 and increased the price for their Standard package to $12 for new subscriptions.

Netflix

Plan Old Price New Price Streams HD
Basic $8.99 $9.99 1 SD
Standard $11.99 $13.99 2 HD
Premium $14.99 $17.99 4 UHD

Stan

Plan Price Streams HD
Basic $10 1 SD
Standard $12 3 HD
Premium $15 4 UHD

looks like Stan wants to price match netflix..wait what?

    • Any idea how you can sign up to a cheaper country? Chile or Mexico? The accounts still work around the world.

  • I don't find enough stuff worth watching on these services anyway, I have been getting by with free trials (my 6 month Telstra Netflix trial just finished) and definitely wont be paying for them. They have a few good shows, and maybe I'd consider joining for $5 a month but definitely not at $20 a month (for 4k plan after price rise + GST kicks in). I hardly find time to watch TV as it is..

    • Did you get the free 6 months with the Telstra TV deal? Do you know if the offer is still available for new Telstra TV accounts?

wow Netflix is expensive, my public library has better content.

my public library has better content.

would that be the public library of awesome?

the last time we were in a public library there were things like books. we can't really wait for the books to be made into film and then streamed over the cable.

      • i'm guessing you haven't been to a library for a long time if you think they only have books and nothing online.

        • if you think they only have books and nothing online.

hmmm. going to the library to look up something online when i can do it right here and now make no sense to me.

        • @whooah1979:
Pretty sure Savas is referring to libraries that offer free online streaming subscriptions that you use at home with your library card details.
Mine used to offer Choice for free. Don't have to go to library to use.

          aha. i didn't know that.

        • @whooah1979:
I don't need to visit a library. I can just go to their online postal and get online goods. Ebook, magazines, videos, music, access Training/course sites.

  • My 6 months Telstra TV Netflix trial is about to expire, and I'm not sure that I got enough out of it to pay $14 p/m. I'd maybe get it if a cheaper option was available, mainly for the kids.

Does anyone know if signing up for overseas accounts is possible, like here?

    • Yep still possible but just a little tricker since Netflix blocked a bunch of proxies. But Mexico is the cheapest at the moment - approx $9.50 for two screens - https://drive.google.com/open?id=1vId7Jpl8pBUJNE4ghcuq24R9mD…

      • Cheers, will give it a go.

The only pain will be the boys whinging about losing their viewing history.

        Oh well!

Nope doesn't happen. All profile and history remains in tact.
Just need to sign into Netflix, and cancel your account.
The day it expires, log in via a VPN/Proxy (if it works) via country of your choice and sign up again.

We're paying Netflix by Telstra Recharge Credit, so no great loss, it's still effectively free.

  • I don't pay for netflix so not an issue for me

  • I wonder if they will up the fee for people here with a US Netflix account? Had it for years before they came to Aus but am geoblocked now to crappy Aus content.

  • +1

I unsubscribed today. I don't use it much anymore anyway. Plus the price hikes ain't 10% for GST and the content is not comparable to the USA. Moral of the story….. laters :)

  • is this actually confirmed??

    If so where

    I've checked netflix no change

the GST crap postponed for 12 months

Can someone post a credible link

    • You can view the new price points during the signup for Netflix. According to this article by Netflix, they'll send you an email one month before the price on your plan changes, so most likely they will send you the email sometime this month and then increase your price next month.

GST for digital products is this year and GST for low value imported goods is next year

      • doesn't make sense I've got the billing amount on the account for this month and due date which they can't change.

If the change was to be implemented it wouldn't be increased till end of August due to billing cycle which means they have started non compliant for the first 2 months

which is great for me i guess but still seems vague

        • screen grabbed bill so they don't try a swifty

  • I subscribe to a few streamers on Twitch and hope they don't add GST or raise the $4.99US sub prices as it already comes out to around $7 AUD. Thinking that the Amazon Prime Video I recently signed up to might increase (like Netflix and Stan) but I'll just cancel after the 6-month $2.99 promotion as using for a cheaper Twitch sub- Amazon Prime Video has not much content and needed to change Xbox regions to get the app.
