Vancouver BC or Melbourne VIC

Hi there,

I was wondering if i can get some insight for this decision I have to make.
I got a job offer and I am supposed to choose between Melbourne or Vancouver.
Offer is higher in Melbourne - 135k (inclusive of super) or 110k in Vancouver.
Been doing a lot of research and it seems the pays are somewhat equivalent if you consider cost of living. Can anyone confirm that?

Are those pays really equivalent? I am going to regret not putting money on super? (from what i understand, if i end up staying in Oz and getting PR, I'll never see this money till im 60?)

Thanks in advance.

Melbourne, Australia, has been ranked by the EIU as the world's most liveable city for seven years in a row, from 2011 to 2017. Prior to 2011, Vancouver, Canada, was ranked the EIU's most liveable city. Vancouver was ranked third in 2015 and 2016, while Vienna, Austria, was ranked second in those years.

Haha so apparently they are both ranked at the top as the most liveable cities.

Melbourne is bigger in terms of population, at 4.4 million vs 2.5 million. Pretty sure Melbourne is much warmer too. If you like skiing then Vancouver would be the better option. Remember it hosted the winter Olympics.

How do you think the two jobs compare in terms of career progression opportunities?

    • Hi,

First of all, thanks for all the replies.
So that is an interesting point. The company is actually Australian, their biggest offices are in Perth and Melbourne. Vancouver office is smaller and it is seems to be growing now. But from what I understood, career development may be faster in Oz (well established offices).

There is no comparison. Go to Vancouver.

Vancouver - difference is chalk and cheese.

    Vancouver - skiing in Whistler…..Winning.

Vancouver is easily better than Melbourne but the cost of living seemed to be about the same. Canadian's get paid less than Australians for the same work unfortunately (how they afford to buy property there is beyond me). You have Whistler/Blackcomb only a couple of hours north of the city, Vancouver Island just to the West not to mention Grouss mountain and Capilano suspension bridge only a few minutes away. Plus Canada has the most progressive leader in the world right now and NO BOGANS. Only bad thing I would say is that there are a lot of homeless and drug users.

No Bogans? In winter, 80% of Australia is there!

In my humble opinion, it's worth going to Vancouver for a different experience, if nothing else.

    • I was there last week, E Hastings Street, Vancouver, very scary 😀

      • and what were you doing in E Hastings Street?

        • I went there during the day, not night just to see actually what it likes, as it's one of the most "famous" street in Vancouver, sadly it's jut next to the Chinatown and the beautiful Gastown :)

        • @Marcsie: infamous you mean.

    • Minimum wage is less for sure. But salaries in Canada and US for professionals are better paid than here.

      • Not in IT it isn't (For Canada, no idea bout US) Source - i have employees there.

  • I would go to Vancouver because I like big mountains for hiking, skiing and snowboarding.

  • I've lived in both, money goes a lot further in Vancouver. Rent / housing might be similar (still cheaper in Van) though goods / food / going out I find a fair bit cheaper. Also you've got the States on your doorstep. I've love to be back in Van on 110K!

    • Thanks for the reply.

So would you say I can maybe save the same amount if I live similar lifestyles on both cities making 110k in Van instead of 135 in Melbourne?

      • I think more money in the pocket in Van the though depends on lifestyle… Where your money goes.

Also in Melbourne, you can bet on not knowing what the weather will do. In Vancouver you can bet on rain!

  • So look like most choosing Vancouver here. Now post the same question on the Canadian equivalent of Ozbargain (if there is one) and lets see what results you get there.
