Anyone Worked at David Jones Part Time? Questions about Policy on Holidays

Hi all, I am still in University, just got accepted for a part time role in David Jones.

However, I want to go overseas and take a language course there for 2 months at the end of the year, would this be possible?

I wish to keep my job in David Jones after my trip so I am wondering whether I should take the course or not (have not made any financial commitment yet).

I will be able to stay and help out during the Christmas hours then leave maybe Jan-Feb (before Semester begins in March).

Would this be too much? Would I be let go? What do you think? Or maybe cut my trip and only stay 1 month?

I used to work at David Jones part time. after being there for 2 years I took a year off to live in London and then upon return got my old job back. but that was last century.

best to ask HR. but considering they'll be training you and you'll have a few months of experience before you leave then there is an incentive to get you back.

personally - I'd take the trip. jobs come and go. opportunities to live overseas ouweigh a temp job

Do not cut your trip short for a job in retail. Take the job, work hard, take your trip. When you return they will take you back. If they dont, youve got some experience behind you and you will be able to pick up a retail job anywhere. I worked in retail for 15 years and all I did was cut my life short for them. Its not worth it. Go enjoy your trip!

Have you…. Spoken to your manager ? Ask them if (depending on your performance) they'd be happy to hold your job for 2 months till you returned. Get everything in writing. As others have said. Opportunities like you've gotten don't come very frequently so I'd be signing up to the course and then negotiating with David Jones.

As per above, take the trip. I wouldn't even mention it until you've been there a while, especially given you are available pre Christmas. If you are a good employee then take the chance they will want you back, they don't have to invest in hiring a new employee. If not then use that experience to get a job somewhere else. If you choose your retail job over a language course overseas, please give yourself an uppercut!

Assistant manager here. Jan-Feb is still holiday season and if you've been hired on as a casual you'll be expected to be available. If you're a casual then it's completely up to your sales manager whether you'll be kept on after X months hiatus, if you're perm part-time then it's both up to HR and your sales manager whether you can go or not (you should have a HR rep in your store). If you're just in the planning stages, I would definitely mention it to see what your options are. Then you can decide on the future and weigh up your situation.

Tldr: Talk to your sales manager.
