I've been waiting a while for another deal on these drives and at this price I decided to pull the trigger.

Not quite as cheap as some previous deals but still a bargain for the 2x 8tb red drives alone.

At that price range i took a punt on the 8tbtoshiba enterprise drives posted at ozb for my new multipurpose rig vm/nas server. Bought 4. Kept it nice and steady 32C with a silent noctua fan, surface testing em currently for a couple of days.

    • 7200rpm heats things up. I actually have both and the good thing with 8TB WD Reds is you don't even need a fan and they will still be super cool to run after running 24/7 for weeks. Can't say the same about 7200rpm drives. They would need some sort of air cooling or risk facing premature drive death. Heat = enemy of all electrical equipment.

having spent 12 years of my life in a data centre hole, i get what you are saying.

However back in my man cave (home environment) I have a 42ru rack fully populated with 6 grunty servers and all sort of other crap such as poe switches etc. I have to keep this cool with an aircon (thank goodness for 10kw solar panels and a tesla powerwall 7kw greatly helping with the bill).

Really depends what you want out of the drives u choose. 1 of my srv has 8 x 6tb wd reds, 1 with 12 x 6tb hgst, another with 8 x 6tb toshiba, etc, etc they are for different purposes. Having a server enterprise environment helps as there is sufficient cooling for all these drives. I have had no failure on the hgst or toshiba after a few years (since 2015 and been on 24/7) but 2 failed on the wd reds which were replaced under warranty.

I am a fan of the wdreds over seagates (just had so many failures and havent revisited them personally, although work still buy them). For a home nas highly recommend reds. For my purpose i need them toshiba for their extra grunt using them for storing VM workloads and other things. Being a toshiba "enterprise" drive gives me somewhat an inch more confidence… so far i've had a great run with toshibas. work out what you need them for and tweak to their ideal environment. Eofy i ended up purchasing 8 x 8tb. Just completed a burn in on all 8 of them and they are all in perfect shape. The place gave 2yrs wty but according to the lady when they plonked the serial num on toshiba it had 5yrs. so id have to go direct to toshiba after their 2yrs expires(if they still exist caveat).

  • I just want this to back up my NAS.

What's the plug like? I checked out the manual and couldn't see the voltage or plug type from the brick.

Is it a standard figure 8 plug from the brick?

  • There are two Amazon offers to get up to another $20 off.
    1. Gift Card recharge, not sure how it works, maybe someone could explain.
    2. Install the Amazon toolbar or something (uninstall it after purchasing)

  • Just our of interest are Amazon charging GST on purchases to Australia yet?

From what i know digital good are 10% after of the 1st whilst good will be in the next financial year.

  • Thanks! In the process of building a new backup NAS and this fits the bill, bought two and the charge came to $655.15 AUD each. Also expecting 6% cashback through cashrewards.

    • so i am just guessing you anticipated for the extra gst on the border or did u do some trickery (seperate accounts or seperate purchase at different times)? interesting to know.

Separate purchases and also different delivery addresses and names. One I got shipped to my place and the other to my parents.

From what I see on the CashRewards sites, the cashback on Amazon purchases only relate to some Department-store type items like baby-wear etc.
It does NOT seem to be available on electronics & computer gear.
I'd love to be corrected if the cashback is available for these drives.

      • I think you are right. I didn't read the fine print and just assumed, silly me.

  • Bought two of these a few months back for a total of 32TB of space. Have them sitting in a synology nas - not the quietest of drives though thats probably the enclosure, but quick and reliable so far.
