Aussie Broadband NBN - One Month Free Trial and Double Data for 6 Months (on-net POI areas) with No Contract

2250
wpfreetrial

Update 7/7/17: Aussie Broadband have given OzBargain users a separate promo code - ozbargain. Expired, use wpfreetrial

Since Skymesh reduced the bandwidth of their CVCs to save money, I switched to Aussie Broadband. They have built their own network using dedicated Telstra links and ensure there is enough CVC bandwidth ensuring full speeds at all times.

If there isn't enough bandwidth available, then you won't be able to sign up until more bandwidth is available.

      • But I’m an existing customer, what about me!
For existing customers, this offer can be combined with our refer a friend deal. Basically get a mate to signup, if they enter your customer number in the referral field and then the wpfreetrial code in the promo code field, the two offers will combine so that you both get a free month.

        • The refer a friend thing has been around for quite awhile, thought it was always a free month thing. Its the double data for 6 months thats the amazing good deal part

A stack of terrible reviews of Aussie Broadband locally (rural SA through Port Augusta POI), take the free month and run if issues arise..

    • +1

Wouldn't that be on NBNco's congested fixed wireless towers though?

      • Ya pretty much. Seems if you're on fixed wireless you can enjoy shit Internet for the rest of eternity.

      • That's what they blamed, but a simple switch to Telstra and issues were fixed for most customers. You still see peak times (maybe 23mbps rather than 25), but not the 4-5mbps seen on Aussie back in the day.

Not sure if it was on or off net for those customers, but the level of support was disgusting - they simply blamed NBN and moved on, when it can't be NBN as problems don't persist with other providers.

    • If its off-net, don't even bother. if its on-net, then all those old reviews don't matter much. The service has improved so much since they made their own POIs

/edit, actually might not even matter for fixed wireless

      • You can't sign up to 'off-net' anymore. You have to wait till the PoI is 'on-net', because Optus was so poor.

        • Ah really, makes sense. Optus's POI really hurt their brand

  • Noob here. So how does this work for people that don't have NBN in their area?

    • +10

      It doesn't, enjoy the wait!

      • +1

        Kill me

  • Where did you get that information RE: Skymesh?

    • +3

Whirlpool probably. Its pretty common knowledge

      • +2

        Yep, Whirlpool.

      • Ugh that's so disappointing. Been with them for years and never had a problem so haven't checked their WP forum for ages. I'm not impacted yet at least

  • +5

Don't join this deal.. You'll slow the rest of us who are connected with Aussie BB! :)
Joined 2 months ago from iinet and they're superb. Super quick and no issues. :)

  • +3

I was with Skymesh FTTP until recently. After Paul Rees left, the company who took over dumped a whole heap of bandwidth. My 100/40 went to ADSL speeds, high latency and packet loss.

Switched to AussieBB with the free trial and things are back to how they were with Skymesh originally. AussieBB reps on Whirlpool are great and are honest about the amount of bandwith they can supply to each area. Highly recommended.

    • Currently with Skymesh and have noticed deplorable speeds and ping lately, haven't really had much of a chance to investigate but I shall jump on this offer and compare the pair.

      • +1

You're not alone. Check the threads on Whirlpool. Skymesh has gone to shit and they aren't keen to fix it. They're taking free cancellations and refunding rest of month at the moment.

Get on AussieBB if your POI is on the list. My service was connected in about 10 minutes after signing up on 2nd port. I checked speed on Skymesh which was crap, moved cable from port 1 to port 2, same hardware and speeds were instantly 100/40 again.

        • +1

That's really disappointing as they were quite good a few months back and I was not seeing any slowdown.

Thanks for the insight, will definitely take AussieBB up on this offer and give it a run. Currently struggling to buffer a YouTube video which is something I haven't encountered since I switched to the nbn and I am not impressed.

      • I had the same with skymesh :(

  • This or BuzzTelco, I just need good uploadspeeed that is all

    • BuzzTelco is cheaper for your purpose

      • Thank you for that

  • +2

CVC congestion is not what people make it out to be.

    • For example, The majority of people on TPG unlimited do not have CVC congestion. CVC congestion is fixed if you report the issue to them, as most ISP's will.

    • CVC congestion has nothing to do with international speeds. Most ISP's suffer from poor international speeds.

    • Most people don't accurately report CVC or international speed issues and they are generally isolated issues anyway.

    • There are real issues with CVC congestion with certain ISP's in certain areas, knowing which ISP and where is difficult.

    • New ISP's or ISP's without many customers can get away claiming they have no CVC congestion, most of the time they become similar to other ISP's in time.

    • OK, the issue is not specifically CVC congestion - although the way the NBN (over)charge for CVC tends to make providers limit bandwidth. The problem is the linkage from the PoI to the rest of the internet. There are only a few offerings to get the data from the PoI to sensible peering points and international bandwidth. And many of these tend to 'share' the bandwidth.

So what they do is spec for the average bandwidth demand, rather than the evening peak. So once it hits 5pm the connection to even local servers slows to a crawl as this overloaded share bandwidth gums up. Optus are particularly bad for this, they slow to lower than ADSL speeds.

Providers like Aussie Broadband have paid to have their own fibre (from Telstra) to connect up to each and every PoI.

And the reason the unlimited services slow up is because it's the high users who go from them, using up more of the available bandwidth. Since those providers have the same cost equations as everyone else, that tends to mean they underprovide, and you are back to prime time slowdowns.

      • The issue with Optus has nothing to do with NBN though.

Optus has had capacity issues for the past 10 years. Anyone on their cable service would know that.

    • Sauce?

  • +2

This is a great way to do business, especially with the mess that is NBN. There is no way to know how fast you can go up to without buying into a plan. Too bad I'm stuck in a 2 year contract with Optus.

    • +1

Complain to TIO! I did, and managed to get out of contract without single cent charged

      • how did you do that ? Saying bad speed ?

      • Well my speed with Optus isn't too bad 94/38… however, it is inconsistent and I get down to about 40/38 during peak… considering they are giving decent speed some times I don't think I'll get TIO involved, just gotta hope I can switch to AussieBB when my contract is up.

        • Well, you're lucky then. I'm getting like 5/70 during peak time with Optus..guess YMMV

    • Same with Droid11, I complain to TIO and got out of contract.

  • Aussie Broadband has been added into the referral system, existing users can enter their customer code into the system. New users can use one of those codes to give the referrer a free month, however they'll receive no additional benefit themselves (beyond the 1 month from the promo code) as far as I'm aware.

    • If they put this code in (to a separate box) they do.

    • Where does one find the 6 digit code?

      • From the invoice.

        • seems the plain text version doesn't list the customer ID, found it on pdf version.

  • how do I know if I'm on ney with POI

    • search using the link above and if it says "on net" youre good to go i believe

      • Every time I try, it shows "Unfortunately an error occurred whilst trying to qualify your address with NBN, please try again."

  • Still no reason for me to switch. Why is NBN so expensive? 1TB @ 100/40 for $100/month! I pay $60 for unlimited 100/40 with TPG's FTTB.

    • think about it from an infrastructure and hardware point of view and why FTTB would be cheaper…

    • Don't know much about FTTB, though with normal FTTP / FTTN plans, not all ISP's are equal. $60 will get you unlimited 100/40 with MyRepublic, though you will be lucky to get close to those speeds during peak hours. $80 with Aussie Broadband gets you 500gb 100/40, with the main difference being that you can still realistically achieve speeds like 90Mbps during peak times.

NBN is planned to come to my suburb next month.
    mark

  • Sorry for my ignorance, I just check with Aussie BB and stated POI is available in my area. Does that mean I can have NBN connection with AUssieBB? What is POI btw? Sorry I am totally hopeless in this NBN thing. I am currently with Telstra landline and speed is superfast. I received letter from Telstra informing my area is NBN ready that's all I know,

  • Noob question.

My foljs are on Bigpond cable and are in the POI NBN area.

Can they have bigpond cable connected and this trial on the side so two connections to the house?

  • when checking the address it always says "Unfortunately an error occurred whilst trying to qualify your address with NBN, please try again."

  • Just chated with them online, only upfront cost appears to be an $80 modem if dont already have nbn modem.

Anybody know if thier $80 modem any good?

    • I personally went for the $200 modem. Have been putting up with horrid internet for months and months, wasn't going to let anything slow me down!

    • +1

Just to point out, if you have FTTP you need a router.

If you have FTTN, FTTB or FTTC you need a modem/router.

So make sure you know what you need first.

And also bear in mind that if you want to go VoIP for a phone line, you will need a box to do that too, maybe built into the above router.

Buying from them removes some of the complexity, but it's not absolutely needed (I didn't for instance).

    • I would really suggesting getting your own router, something like an ausus or netgear AC1900, its easily worth the extra $100-150 to get a good router

  • +2

Did this offer the other week, have been connected for a few days now (FTTP), very happy with the speeds.

Current speeds during what I would consider Peak hour:

    Ping - 3ms
    Download - 93.98Mbps
    Upload - 38.11Mbps

  • +1

Been with Aussie Broadband a bit over a month now with the whirlpool special, get my full speeds any time of the day. Pricing is good and the service is great.

  • Why would you bother? Literally like $10 more for Telstra 1000GB 100/40 plan. Which can even be had for less, I pay $99pm for 100/40 Telstra FTTP NBN with basic Foxtel IQ3.

    • +1

Maybe because that offer is no longer available…

    • +1

I only need 500GB so I would be paying $20 a month more, I also like the idea of supporting the little guy, and the Australian staff is definitely a positive too.

    • +10

Not wanting a 24 month contract could be one reason.

      • +1

Fair call. Forgot about the contract thing.

I just got sick of basically any ISP but Telstra for a while there, they all promise the world and deliver 5mbps instead of 100 in peak times. People whinge about Telstra but at least they don't oversell their network like almost every other provider out there, including Optus.

I have heard this Aussie broadband place is different though, so good on them.

    • +1

because dealing with telstra in any capacity for any kind of issue is an absolute ballache

    • Not everyone is silly enough to want Foxtel.

      Plus, you know, its telstra.

      • Where do you watch your live sport and associated live sporting shows?

Don't bother saying live streams, I'm know how shit they are. The price for live sports is well worth is imo. Everything else there is newsgroups and Plex ;)

        • I only watch tennis, and VPNs and bootlegs livestreams work just fine.

The price is not worth it for a couple of crappy sports channels, but thats just me

  • So if I sign up for the "family" package now and when the 6 months finish and I upgrade, will there be any fees or maybe a contract then?

    • I was told before that I can upgrade then without fee. No guarantee what the plans or options will look like then but likely to stay the same over such a short period.

  • I'm confused whether my rt-ac68u will work with AussieBB. I am currently using it no worries with skymesh FTTP. Can someone help?

    • Yes it can. I got the exact same router.

  • ABB nbn uploads counted? Can't find the info anywhere

    • +2

Yes, but soon you'll be able to get a $10 a mont bolt on to get unlimited uploads. There'll also be an unlimited off peak bolt on for $10 a month too.

      • +2

You wouldn't just get one bolt on. Gotta be a pair!

        • ah, reminds me of the Gold Coast :)

      • These are available now through the My Aussie portal.

      • Sounds good. Can plans be changed without charge?

        • +2

Nope, no penalty for plan changes.

      • handy to know bodge!

  • It's kind of ridiculous how they make you pay $10 extra a month for VoIP!
Otherwise you don't have VoIP at all!

Make it free and just charge me IF I make any calls…

This is line rental in disguise

    • I have a mynetfone voip service - does this mean it wont work on Aussie Broadband without the $10/month extra?

      • I have a mynetfone voip service - does this mean it wont work on Aussie Broadband without the $10/month extra?

No it doesn't, ABB's phone service has nothing to do with mynetfone. SIRS2k has a gripe with ABB and is posting rubbish.

        • +1

i have mynetphone voip with similar provider and works fine

    • +1

It's kind of ridiculous how they make you pay $10 extra a month for VoIP!

It's even more ridiculous that you're criticising a service you know nothing about! If you spent a few seconds on their website you'd know this. The $10 and $20 plans include calls.

      https://www.aussiebroadband.com.au/residential/residential-p…

Make it free and just charge me IF I make any calls…

Go to a VoIP provider that offers this.

This is line rental in disguise

Not really, it's ignorance in disguise.

      • -3

Mate, given your comments you're a true fanboy of this company.

First of all I never heard of this company before and I have no gripe with it by any means, the only gripe I have is them forcing you to have a "bundle" of included calls every month!

What about the people that just want a line to be available for their alarm systems that MAY call out once a year or once in a lifetime!
Looking at the other offer on OZB from BuzzTelco for an example, they HAVE PAYG VoIP! No minimum service fee no included calls!
I'm with Exetel now and have that same exact setup!

        You're the ignorant one mate.

        • Mate, given your comments you're a true fanboy of this company.

Not the case but I'm happy with their service and where they are heading as most ISP's are offshoring most of their staff and offering a rubbish service. When an ISP goes out of their way to be open about what they are doing, hires Australian staff and offers a good product that they support well I'm going to recommend it.

First of all I never heard of this company before and I have no gripe with it by any means, the only gripe I have is them forcing you to have a "bundle" of included calls every month!

First you complained that you had to pay $10 and claimed this was like line rental and now you complain because they offer an all inclusive package for $10? You don't have to use them for VOIP purposes. They are offering a good deal for unlimited calls for $10 and $20 a month which is a great price for the vast majority of people.

What about the people that just want a line to be available for their alarm systems that MAY call out once a year or once in a lifetime!

Who cares about them, they have many choices they can make. Your example is rare, pointless as why would you use the NBN for alarm communication as it's not reliable and has limited or no power backup.

Looking at the other offer on OZB from BuzzTelco for an example, they HAVE PAYG VoIP! No minimum service fee no included calls!

          Good for them.

I'm with Exetel now and have that same exact setup!

Good for you but how is this relevant?

          You're the ignorant one mate.

I'm not the one making absurd claims about line rental!

        • @Maverick-au:

You've lost it, I'm giving you those examples because this is my situation and you say who cares about them.
You're an ideal member of this community, keep up the great advice.

Go crawl back under your rock

        • @sirs2k:

You've lost it, I'm giving you those examples because this is my situation and you say who cares about them.

You rubbished this company using misleading information because they are offering simple easy to understand internet and VoIP plans that suit the vast majority of the people.

Who cares that you want to have your alarm connected to maybe dialout once a year and you don't want to pay for this aside from a one off call charge. They don't offer this but plenty of VoIP providers do. You're the one that claimed their service was ridiculous and made misleading claims about them.

    • +1

Why? You don't have to use their VoIP. You can still use their NBN service and use someone else for VoIP. Keep in mind though that their VoIP call quality is better than most.
I disagree that you can compare it with line rental. Telstra line rental was basically forced upon most people. Whereas ABB's VoIP is not forced. Use someone else for VoIP if you wish.

    • IF you want a dedicated VoIP you can pay for it.

But there are dozens of ways to make your own voip for nothing

  • Anyone has an idea when would this offer expire?

    • This offer will remain active until at least 30 days after our last POI goes live, and we may extend it beyond that.

      • My apologies, I saw that but just don't understand what 'last POI' mean, not familiar with internet terms :(

        • No worries. POI are the points of interconnection. They refer to the connection points that join the NBN together and the infrastructure typically live inside telephone exchanges. There are 121 POIs around Australia. Aussie Broadband are connecting their equipment directly into the POIs.

This link should help - http://www.nbnco.com.au/blog/the-nbn-project/how-the-nbn-net…

  • whats their international bandwidth like? i still saturate my 100/40 fttp from tpg overseas through multiple threads, sure a single thread is only like 20mbit but there are very few times i'm using bandwidth from overseas that require more than that in the first place.

  • I just signed up for this earlier tonight and after ~45 minutes, my internet got cut at my apartment in the CBD. Is that because ABB are checking my line in order to provide the service? It's strange; I've never had this before. Hopping from Belong to this, and my Belong modem's LED on the light labelled "Internet" is a solid red now…
