Aussie Broadband NBN - One Month Free Trial and Double Data for 6 Months (on-net POI areas) with No Contract

2250
wpfreetrial

Update 7/7/17: Aussie Broadband have given OzBargain users a separate promo code - ozbargain. Expired, use wpfreetrial

Since Skymesh reduced the bandwidth of their CVCs to save money, I switched to Aussie Broadband. They have built their own network using dedicated Telstra links and ensure there is enough CVC bandwidth ensuring full speeds at all times.

If there isn't enough bandwidth available, then you won't be able to sign up until more bandwidth is available.

    • U got fttb or fttp? If fttp then try plugging ur router into the 2nd port of the NTD (that NBNCo installed in the apartment).

      • I'm on FTTB. Anyway, it fixed itself after I lived like a caveman for approximately 3 hours.

    • This is amazing. Less than 2 days and I'm on Aussie Broadband. Speed test shows amazing results; super consistent without any peaks and troughs at all — just a plateau. http://www.speedtest.net/result/6435518307.png. Already the best RSP experience I've got in my life.

      • Note, when I tested it, I found that it would drop at 4am.

Not that I cared about 4am, but it was quite regular.

During peak time it was 93Mbit+ and 3ms latency.

  • Ignore the price and the customer service, just taking about the speed, does anyone know if AussieBB (100/40) and Telstra (super fast speedboost 100/40) which provider to sign up? I am using Telstra ADSL and NBN is now available at my area, I am thinking this or Telstra. Thanks in advance.

    • +2

I'd go Aussie broadband. No contract and Aussie support. Have a bunch of mates on Aussie and it's been great.

    • Ignore the price and the customer service, just taking about the speed, does anyone know if AussieBB (100/40) and Telstra (super fast speedboost 100/40) which provider to sign up?

Why ignore the customer service? NBN is plagued with issues and you want to speak to someone on the Philippines as he runs through his script which is designed to stall you.

I'd go with Aussie, Australian staff, Telstra is used for the POI connections so they have control over them, they're cheaper, they seem to have plenty of international capacity, they're responsive, seemingly eager to please, communication is good etc etc. Pretty much everything that Telstra is not anymore.

    • Right now, Aussie has speeds the same as Telstra. Long term, its impossible to say if that will stay the case, but its easy to instantly swap provided with Aussie, as there is no contract.

Telstra isn't worth the premium you pay, nor the crappy contracts, nor their terrible service.

      • I know Telstra, crappy service, terrible customer support so that's why I am thiking to switch to ABB. However, as an existing customer I can easily negotiate the price with Telstra to bring the price down. I just don't like to stick to a 24 months contract.

  • Comment from owner of ABB - http://whrl.pl/ReWQIK

"I don't have a lot of background on the type of people that use those coupon sites so thought I'd check in here for some advice."

What type of people are we? Anyone have any descriptive words?

I think Harvey Norman would class us as "professionals"
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/89421

    • I think the concern was more about whether everyone here would be signing up for 1 free month then cancelling afterwards, which would be quite costly for ABB.

    • Laughing here so hard!!! Thanks for that Stix your great!

  • I run a share house and need unlimited data for peace of mind.

    • I run a share house and need unlimited data for peace of mind.

Give your tenants slow internet through TPG or similar and leave Aussie as a premium service.

Also consider that you probably should have a business connection for that usage type not that they'll find out.

  • +1

I've been with them for nearly 12mths and couldn't be happier. Changed from Skymesh who were a disaster!

  • I'm in St Kilda East Melbourne and although the NBN isn't available there the Aussie BB site says I'm in a NBN POI area, what does that mean? Can I get their NBN or not? (It's confusing because I'm reading there rolling out there own NBN).

    • +1

They aren't rolling out their own NBN … they are getting connected directly to the POIs on the NBN.
Until NBN is ready in your area you won't be able to get on to it, regardless of ABB's POI status.

  • (1) Can you use this one as well as your existing ISP, I really don't want to have to break my contract, trial it, and then have to get another contract from my existing ISPiof for some reason I don't like it.

    (2) How do you tell if your modem is FTTN compatible?

      1. If you are on FTTP then yes, otherwise no

      2. Look it up on a list. As per usual with Oz, they make it more difficult than just being VDSL2 compatible. Some are, some aren't - whirlpool has the lists, etc.

      • Thanks.

What do you mean on FTTP? - I checked if it was available at my address and it said yes, is this it?

        • With FTTP, you get 4 ports (UNI-D1, UNI-D2, UNI-D3, UNI-D4) on the NTD - http://www.myfibre.net.au/22/images/ntd1computer1phone.jpg. If you have a service on UNI-D1 and apply for another connection with another RSP, they will automatically connect it to the next available port. You can then just connect the router to that port to connect to the new provider (or connect UNI-D1 again to go back to the original provider). Once you've chosen a provider, you can cancel the other one.

        • FTTP is fibre running into your house, into a box called an NTD.

FTTN/B/C is fibre running to a node somewhere near your street, and then using the copper wire to your house, where a modem unscrambles the signals.

With FTTP you can in theory have ADSL and Fibre at the same time (although they might well jank it out) and the NTD has 4 ports, meaning you can have more than one provider at one (in theory).

With FTTN it takes over the copper, so it's just the FTTN, and it only has one port, so only one supplier.

Oh, and if the NBN is at your address, then after 18 months they are likely to turn off your old phone line anyway.

        • @sane: Thanks. So No I probably don't have FTTP. Also When I check for NBN POI Check via the site it says yes, but when I check with other sites it says no. Is this because AussieBroadband are satellite?

          POI Name
          Elizabeth 2 CSA

        • @techboy:

What does the NBN site say for your address?

        • @techboy:

That says you are on FTTN, on the Elizabeth 2 PoI, which is on-net with Aussie Broadband (nothing to do with satellite).

So you can get FTTN with them, but would have to switch across. Not sure what you have at present, but if it's ADSL you will have to change eventually anyway. If it's already NBN then it will be with a provider (you should know).

        • @Stix:Planned availability: Jan-Jun 2019*.
Planned technology: nbn™ Fibre to the curb (FTTC)*.

        • @techboy:

Looks like you'll be on ADSL for a while.

        • @Stix: That's what I thought thanks for your help

  • Looking at signing up to this deal (sick of telstra). Is it worth getting the most expensive modem? I want to be future proof as much as possible.

    • What type of connection do you have? Do you need a phone connected?

      • Currently adsl - not keeping home phone.

        • Any high end modem/router (FTTN) or router (FTTP) should give you the best possible speeds and provide a bit of future proofing.

I currently use the Netgear R8000 on FTTP.

        • @Stix: Are you able to use a landline with the R8000?

        • @longislandicetea:

What do you mean? Copper landlines don't exist with FTTP.

We don't have any sort of home phone, and I don't think the R8000 has a voice port.

        • @Stix: I meant VoIP (Still learning the NBN lingo)

        • @longislandicetea:

No worries. We don't have any VOIP.

    I just signed up :)

  • Tried to sign up. was told they've reached 80% of bandwidth for my area (South Coast, SA), can only sign up when more bandwidth expected in September. Are there any other promos/ offers like this?

    • +1

You could try BuzzTelco especially if you need unlimited data.

      • thanks Stix

  • I just did NBN POI check. I had NBN available for a while but yet to connect. After checking the POI I have a doubt now. Being so close to local exchange (less than 1 km) the POI for me is showing as one in about 7 km away. This means local exchange doesn't have POI activated yet even being one of the busiest in the area. If I get connected to NBN now, which will connect from an exchange far from my house, once they activate the POI in local exchange would they then connect from the local one or leave it connected with the one far from my house.

I have a similar experience with TPG ADSL2 for past few years. Being very close (under 1 km cable length and <300m direct distance) from exchange, I used to get speeds around 16~17 mbps 7 years back. Then I moved to Optus around 4 years back and came back into TPG again about 3 years back. However the speeds with TPG had been dropped to 7~10 then has been dropping over the years. In recent couple of years the speeds are under 1 mbps at peak times. TPG doesn't give me an explanation as to why the slow speeds are. They blame it on the distance to exchange and copper. However the logical fact is that I still live in same house and exchange is still in same spot. My friends said it could be either TPG bandwidth issue or they may have connected mine from an exchange far from local one due to not having connections available.

Can similar thing happen by getting a NBN connection far from my house again. I know the speeds will be better anyway but would they reconnect to local one when it's available locally?

    • How far the POI is from your house is totally irrelevant and will not affect your connection speed.
The first thing you need to found out is, what NBN technology will you bet getting? ie. FTTP / FTTN / Fixed Wireless / HFC / etc. Putting your address into the NBN Co web site should tell you. Once you know that, it should be easier to give an indication of what speed to expect.

      • Thanks.

Just checked from NBN-Co site and it says "Build Commenced"
        And it's HFC.

        • +1

You are quite likely to get a decent sync rate. I know a few people on HFC, and they all get 100/40.

        • Checked my address on both AusieBB and NBNCo sites. They show completely different info on availability.

On NBNCo site NBN is not available yet. Type is HFC and status is "Build Commenced"

However on AusieBB site says the service is available. Which one is correct?

POI Name : Wheelers Hill 2 CSA
          Technology : HFC
          POI : On-net
Estimated POI On-net Availability Date : Available
          POI Date Reliability : Available

  • Has anyone received their confirmation email yet? I signed up yesterday and the confirmation email indicated they have sent something to my email but nothing yet.
Also I got no confirmation about double data while signing up but I did receive the message that I have one month free.

Can't wait to call skymesh and cancel my account.

    • Update: Got my emails but the account is not active yet. I am now waiting for their SMS.
Also worth noting that their residential NBN plans only have a strange explanation for the 'Static Ip' that comes with the connection and it is something that prospective customers should look out for

residential is a static ip but we do reserve the right to change this at any time if you need a permanent IP address you can pay an extra $10.00 per month

      • Note: I signed up to Aussie on the Whirlpool offer a while back, and am still with them

I never got the double data confirmation from the email either, but it was applied when I checked my usage.

      • That's pretty standard. They tend to provide the same IP address to you (it's sticky), and since the connection is basically always up - you keep the same IP.

However, they reserve the right to rejig things if needed, and in theory if you're connection was down for a long time, it might be different when you turned the box back on.

$10 is for a true static IP, but most won't need or benefit from it.

    • I was wondering about that too - then checked and Gmail had sent the first e-mail straight to the junk folder, with the 2nd, 3rd and 4th landing in updates without any such dumping :-/

  • am currently with belong. they used to be good. but now not performing well during the peak hours.
does anyone know if they are overselling/oversubscribing ?

    • I just swapped over from Belong because my service was horrible — poor speeds (can't even watch YouTube videos at 720p seamlessly) and sometimes just drops out completely before returning in couple of minutes intermittently. My colleague at work was with Belong to and can't wait to get out of her contract.

  • Got connected in under 24 hours! Thanks OP

    • You're welcome. Have a great weekend.

  • We have disabled Aussie Broadband from our referral system after receiving a request from Aussie Broadband, as it is in violation of their fair play policy for the referral program. See comment here.

  • I'm confused and would appreciate any advice as to whether I can get either a) this deal and/or b) faster internet.
I'm currently on internode ADSL2+ because once upon a time internode used to provide good service and a fast network.
When I try the AussieBroadband POI checkat http://www.aussiebroadband.com.au/nbn-poi/, I get:
    POI Name
    Peakhurst CSA
    Technology
    HFC
    POI On-net/Off-net
    On-net
    Estimated POI On-net Availability Date
    Available
    POI Date Reliability
    Available

If I read this, it seems to imply that my address is already 'on-net' and that access is 'available'. However, when I try to signup, I see that nbn isn't available yet (as i thought). The nbnco web site shows nbn service as 'planned' via hfc for mid-2018.

Perhaps I am misunderstanding what it means when Aussie's checker says that I am 'on-net' and 'available'? Can someone please help me understand?

    • I think that means ABB has their equipment ready to go at the POI but your house isn't connected to the POI yet.

  • Ok guys I signed up and have all my confirmation emails and can log into my account but the wallies never sent me a username and password or modem settings!? They only sent me a online sign in for their site accounts login, but I've gone right through it and no settings, will call later to get the info, anybody else signed up for fixed nbn wireless?? did you get your settings? Thanks all.

    • My understanding is you do not need one for the modem settings.

  • Best customer service and network. Been using this offer since 1 month when it came on whirlpool forums.

  • Thanks OP! awesome deal and based on the whirlpool forums a company that is focused on delivering for its customer base.

  • Since Skymesh reduced the bandwidth of their CVCs to save money…

    Can this be substantiated please?

    • +1

Posted by a Skymesh sales rep - http://whrl.pl/ReVZjd

"Given the background of our changing environment, we have been making adjustments, both increases and decreases,"

This thread https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2641021 is also full of complaints of speed and latency issues during peak times, alluding to the reduction in CVCs.

It seems that many savvy Skymesh customers are migrating to ABB.

  • I was wrong, there is a unique password for modem. Called tech spt to get it. Said it is not standard due to regulatione.

  • Try buzztelco….plan starts with $40 per month for unlimited….with voip enabled free modem if you signup for 12 month plan….i was with aussie broadband and they charge you premium rates but gives you sh**t speed.

    • How long ago was that..? Find that hard to believe if they have their own POIs.

      • Agreed… probably back when they had Optus backhaul.

And what's sh**t speed? Short speed?

      • I changed service last week….so well after they had their own POIs….they charge $50 for 100GB on 12mbps speed now if i have to get slow connection then i might change…so i changed and service is good from buzztelco …

When i called to aussbb to cancle the service they did it with 2minute But didn't bother to ask what was the issue…!

        • Are you in an "on-net" area of ABB?

        • @currentfad: look i got letter from aussbb that network was upgraded to their own backhaul….not sure meaning of on-net…but i had fttn

        • @SydBoy: Well you can check if you put your address into OP's link. I think previously customers could sign up even if they were "off-net" which meant that you were connected to Optus' network instead.

        • @currentfad: just checked address…i was on on-net.

I had aussbb….and speed was slow with onnet but the worst part was when i call to cancel the service within 2 min. Whithout asking why i am doing so.

Buzztelco is new and they got probably few people working with them so i do have initial issue but they were resolved and also they apologiesed….i prefer supporting new player as i strongly believe competetion is good for consumer !

        • @SydBoy: What's your speeds and latency like at this time? Mind doing a speedtest for me? I want to try both ABB and Buzz if I can, especially since ABB have a trial.

        • @currentfad:

          Download :7.71mbps and upload 0.91mbps and latency : 16ms

        • @SydBoy: Thanks for that.

  • I signed up for the 500 GB plan and I don't see the double data. It still says 500 GB on my aussiebb account. Do I get it automatically? My area is in an aussie BB POI.

    • You should. Contact their support.

  • What modems/routers does ABB offer?

    • go to their website you can find them listed there.

  • Edit: Sorry, didn't realise soliciting for referrals are against OzB rules.

    Post revoked.

  • Signed up - transfer is seamless and takes almost no time (mine was overnight because I signed up at 9pm perth time, online by 7:00am!)

Looking great, and thanks for the code!

  • ABB sounds like a reliable provider … limited data is always good. Thought about Buzz Telco but it looks like it is "you get what you pay" (I would like to stay under $70/month but looks like this will get complicated.)

$100 for 1000GB on the 100/40 plan is not cheap … slower speed like 50/20 makes it only 5$ cheaper while going down to 500GB saves $20.

Question: As there is no contract can you change these settings on a monthly basis? I might have a month with 2000Gb but another with only 500GB. Or I would like the $10 unmetered off peak for 1 month only … Can I change my plan with their system or is this something complicated and not possible?

    • yes you can change the plan at any time, and you can add data blocks lowest is 10000 MB $5.00.
      They also have bolt ons:
      Night Owl
      $10.00 per month
Data doesnt get metered between 1am and 7am

      Unmetered Uploads
      $10.00 per month
Only downloads metered, uploads dont count anymore

      Static IP
      $10.00 per month
Static IP in the business range with ability to update reverse DNS in our business subnets

      • Thanks a lot .When I can change plans I could start with the 500GB at just 50/20 and then see how I go :-)
But as their double data deal is finished I might just try MyRepublic for $74.95 and see if it is enough for me. Would be the same price … but more data and faster (when working).

Would not care about the free months … I am with my current provider for 8 years … I rather would have some permanent discount and good speed.

  • Worked for me! Northcote, VIC on HFC. Very happy with the whole experience.

  • -1

No 24h tech support ? How's that supposed to work ?

    • +1

Seriously…what do you expect to be achieved at 2am?

Email your issues, receive a confirmation and you know it will be dealt with expeditiously.

Any other ISP that provides "24hour" 'support' will be merely tsking down your details for action when a tech rolls in after coffee in the morning.

      • 24/7 tech support for an ISP is very realistic. Especially when you're in IT yourself and don't just want to watch Netflix at 2AM.
As someone who has worked in both internet tech support and various software product support roles over the years, it's very doable.
And yes, I've worked and resolved issues in the middle of the night.

If there's a service interruption on their end, I expect that said technician to JUMP out of bed or already be there.
I am not talking about a "Hi, I don't know how to configure my router, can you help" kinda call.

Just because NBN provides piss poor service, any issue takes at least a day to resolve and a tech may roll in tomorrow, in two weeks or whenever they feel like, does not mean it should be the standard here.

        • There was an outage at 11:30pm last night due to a DHCP issue and it was resolved at midnight. They are a small, nimble team so whilst they may not advertise 24 hour support, they work hard to keep a 24/7 service.

        • @Stix: Whirlpool is effectively 24x7 Support. :) They're very active there.

  • I signed up. My NBN was activated within 30 minutes from the time I submitted the online application as I already had another active NBN service. Signed up for a 100mbps plan and am getting very close to that even at peak times. It is still early days but hopefully it stays this good!

    • Don’t worry - it will. ;) Welcome aboard!

    • Hi pantsparty

I am just wondering which other nbn service you came from. What sort of modem have you got?

      • I was with iinet previously. Aussie Broadband activated their service on the second port of my NBN supplied hardware so I had both services running at the same time for a few days and could compare the two. iinet had huge speed reductions during peak hour from the plan speed I was paying for. I have an FTTP NBN connection and am using an Asus RT-AC68U router.

  • Just wondering if anyone could share their refer a friend code so we can both get a month free? Cheers.

    • The refer a friend only works one way… the person who puts the code in does not get a free month only the person who give the code gets a free month. Once your a member you too can give out your "code" to others to earn a free month. And the code it your Id number for Abb not really a code. If you want to give me a free month when you set up an account, message me and I will give you my "code".

      • I see, someone else already PM me, so that person would get the free month from my sign up I suppose. But thanks for the explanation. Cheers.

  • the code is ending soon. It expires on November 26th 2017
