Bachelor of Commerce Liberal Studies Core Elective

Hi all, I am still struggling to choose core elective for my newly accepted offer for B.Comm Liberal Studies.

I am from a science background so a little confused. I am wanting to work in airlines/airports preferably in Asian countries as base staff in the future.

Any advice would be much appreciated as I am really worried…

This may be a stupid question - but do you need a degree to work as airport ground staff? Seems like education overkill if you don't plan on using it.

You'd be better off with a Certificate III in Travel or Graduate Diploma in something similar.

A B.Comm is generally for people who want to work in finance/banking/accounting/economics.

The majority of those electives will be a complete waste of your energy and money as they won't help you in that career. Even a language may be more helpful.

      • Really wouldn't mind working in any field as long as I can work internationally and get to experience life elsewhere! B.Comm liberal studies offered Arts elective which is why i chose it for language purposes… I am still very undecided.. i am leaning towards banking, accounting etc but still unsure.. what option would give me a broad job offers…

        • If you want to work internationally study accounting and become an auditor - lots of opportunities for overseas short and long term secondments. Saying that I think you should base your degree choice on personal interests, not what career can take you overseas.

    • I agree, I don't think a degree is necessary but if you want the degree then Human Resource Management might equip you with better people skills for the job?

(I am not speaking from experience, just my educated guess that HR studies could complement your people skills)

  • My guess is base staff would be covered by locals for most developed countries. TBH I think you would be better off getting an airport job here and getting experience/a resume.

    • I was thinking of applying for graduate position with Qantas or something similar and gain experience. Even if it's not as a ground staff role, I would want to work overseas for a few years just to experience life. Don't know which elective to choose from still.. UGH

Search the job advertisements of companies and roles you're interested in, and work backwards from there. Front line customer service would never require degree and as mentioned above, those roles are almost always filled by locals anyway.

Even reach out to HR departments of those companies and see what they recommend for best chances of getting into their graduate programs

If you are going to do a BCom then don't waste your time studying fluff that has no application in the real world
