  • I find my old 720p yi ant camera has better resolution than this one. Night mode is very crappy resolution, you wont be able ti identify anyone if somebody broke in to your house. Planning to buy more but I'm hesitating now.

  • aud much stronger but still not as cheap as earlier deals. I've been holding out and hoping it can get back to $18Usd!

  • It's $19.59 on the mobile site for anyone who wants it cheaper.

    • It's US$19.59 on the website if you change to USD….

      • Oh true, I was just on mobile so thought it was one of their mobile only specials. Not sure why the title is $20.34 then.

  • +1

Also for those interested, https://github.com/samtap/fang-hacks has alternative software so you can do things like stream video directly via rtsp from the camera.

    • i follow it but then at the step:
visit http://device-ip/cgi-bin/status (yes replace with device ip i got by logging into my modem)
      i get a '404 Not Found' page

      any idea how?

      • No idea - maybe try pinging the address to make sure it hasn't got a different one? I'm still waiting for my first one to arrive before I try to hack it… ;-)

        • he is getting a 404, so is reaching the camera. But the hacks are not installed.

    • Can you still have access to all the other features the camera has when you do this? Setup alarm notifications, use inbuilt microphone/speaker?

I clearly don't know enough on the topic but is there any major advantage using the inbuilt streaming capacity compared to the RTSP when the camera is hacked?

      • Main advantage is no longer reliant on the remote Xiaomi cloud service….. I think you can choose to still have everything else available as well if you want.

        • I can see how that would suit those people concerned about privacy and I would consider hacking it if i was continuously monitoring inside the home (in a Big Brother TV show way).

        • @cheepo: it's less paranoia, more the case I know it will still work even if the internet drops out or the remote cloud service croaks. It also means that streaming video performance should be better when viewed locally as the traffic doesn't have to go to China and back….

        • @PlasticSpaceman: do you know if it still works after wifi drops out? My issue with the Ants cam is if wifi drops for ~10+min you can't remote to thew cam (via the app).

        • Xiaomi cloud server hasn't been very reliable in the last few weeks at all. I reckon it only worked around 50% of the time when I decided to have a quick check while away from home.

        • @supabrudda: As it's wifi of course if the wifi drops out then you won't be able to get on to it. I'd suggest maybe trying to give the camera a fixed IP address (or reserving one to be dedicated to the mac address of the camera if using dhcp) as - if the network is having issues - it's always possible the camera is getting different IP addresses which is confusing your app.

        • @PlasticSpaceman: ah thanks. Yeah they have fixed ip's. It just that they appear n ot to reconnect automatically after a moderate wifi drop out.

I'm not sure if its thay they're not reconnecting to the wifi, or the cloud. Maybe I'll have to ping them next time it happens.

          Thanks

    • Tried it but found it to be too unstable for proper use.

I have two of these cameras and personally would spend more money to buy something with proper features. Good for areas you want to monitor live like baby room etc, but wouldn't use this for actual security.

  • Got one from previous sale, I have to say, I am genuinely amazed about how much I can get for 20 bucks….it's cheap and cheerful.

  • How is this for spotting rodents in a night time or very dark scenario? Thinking of setting up a couple in previous rat infested areas or just places they path.. also maybe one for the attic.

    • My brother did this and apparently it recorded the movements, but there was some false positive record too

      • Like wind going through objects or pushing dust around?

  • Does this work on its own or does it require a base like a CCTV system?

Seems all you need is an app. I don't trust mi Home though. It couldn't connect to my Eyecare 2 lamp.

So this thing doesn't constantly record like a CCTV does, right? You control when to turn it on and off via app?

    • Yes, you can turn it on/of via the app. The risk is, as with all IoT devices, if someone hacks it and turns it on when you're not aware that you're being watched. Hence the hacks suggested above to replace the firmware.

      • Can you set the thing to record constantly and overwrite old recording when full?

        • I'm still playing with mine, which only arrived on Friday, so I'm still in the process of setting it up. I'm hoping to set mine up to record to my Home Assistant server (an old laptop), but not sure if I'll be able to get it working yet.

  • What write speed do you need on the card to cover 1080p recording? Will a 10MB/s card suffice?

    • +1

It only records at around 250-400kbps… I.e. a 0.05MB/s card should suffice.

      • That's pretty crap quality. Why can't security cameras have decent lenses for once?
