Great deal in my opinion from Telstra. Unfortunately I am on contract until next year.

Finally got there after two days and speaking with 12 Telstra staff. Reminded me of why I left them years ago in the first place.

    Daniel at 16:18, Aug 1:
I'm afraid discounts and other offer is not applicable for new Post paid customers
    Kit at 16:18, Aug 1:
Im interested in high data, such as the 15gb plan, but my budget is only $50 per month
    Daniel at 16:18, Aug 1:
Since your service is under prepaid, it has no contract
    Kit at 16:19, Aug 1:
can you take into account that I have been a long serving member?
    Daniel at 16:19, Aug 1:
getting a postpaid plan, meaning you are new customer
    Kit at 16:19, Aug 1:
I would like to stay with Telstra and not go with competitor
    Daniel at 16:19, Aug 1:
Yes, a long serving member, however under Prepaid service
    Kit at 16:20, Aug 1:
so theres nothing you can do to make me stay?
    Daniel at 16:20, Aug 1:
    Oh oh
    Daniel at 16:20, Aug 1:
You friend share the discounts she got?
    Kit at 16:20, Aug 1:
    yes
    Daniel at 16:20, Aug 1:
Advice your friend that if she share what she got
    Daniel at 16:21, Aug 1:
Discounts might be taken off on her account
    Kit at 16:21, Aug 1:
really? Is that in writing anywhere?
    Daniel at 16:23, Aug 1:
We advice your friend, that avoid sharing what she got
    Daniel at 16:23, Aug 1:
I'm afraid we don't have anything to offer for you since your service is under Prepaid
    Daniel at 16:24, Aug 1:
Discounts are invitational or for a long serving Postpaid customers

  • it would be interesting to know what the ACCC thought about this..

I've been a Telstra Prepaid customer for almost 5 years (Cap Encore). Been looking to move to a Postpaid BYO plan, mostly as I've been using quite a lot of data. Tried twice with Disconnections, but they wouldn't budge on discounts. One stated that any discounts were only applicable for Postpaid customers and that a new SIM card would be sent. Motivated by the awesomeness of the OzBargain Community, I tried again the following day. Mentioned the Optus 15GB for $40 offer and politely asked for anything similar data-wise. Rep offered the BYO M Plan with a $10 discount p/m for 12 months. Signed up and moved to Postpaid, all within 20 minutes. Oh, and didn't have to change SIM cards :) Thanks OzBargain!

  • Just had a long conversation with Telstra who refused to offer a discount unless I provided them with the information of the user who received the offer, THEN they will be able to match that offer… :/

Anyone willing to dish up their info? :p

  • Thanks OP.

Moved one boost pre-paid and two contracted Telstra phones to this $50/12GB deal.

Have to pay out two handsets but after that will be cheaper month to month by $125.

  • Thanks OP. I had $1,000 calls and 7.5gb per month for $40 then re-contracted for 10gb for the same money. They wouldn't budge any data higher than 10gb.

  • Just for reference:

JB Hi-Fi as a Telstra dealer has a deal for people NEW to Telstra.

    $50 Per Month
$1000 worth of Calls and Texts
    10GB worth of data
    No Contract

If you are new to Telstra, you may also be eligible for a $10 port-in credit. This does not apply for Pre-Post. I am not sure if this is still going, but this makes it $40 per month.

  • Does anyone know if you can use the prepaid credit to buy additional data packs or put it towards a roaming pack?

Methinks this isn't thrifty or deep enough.

Telstra $50 Pre-Paid gives you 8GB data with unlimited calls and texts as standard. However, you use that $50 to buy bolt on data packs ( 2 x $20 2.5GB & 1 x $10 1GB) and you're now at 14 GB for $50 a month with unlimited calls and texts.

I could be wrong but I think that trumps most, if not all, of the above especially because you're also on the network with the most coverage?

wow, if that's the case, i'm jumping on it tomorrow. I know they used to do that with the old Freedom (not Plus) plans… from what i could gather on the Telstra Website, i don't think it is though. at best, you might be able to buy 1gb more using the $15 Plus credit. Still… not bad.

You're right that it's not advertised, but using #100# allows you to buy the data packs from your handset. I still do it, and it's absolutely aces!"

  • Thanks OzBargain <3 Chatted to disconnections and switched my 8gb for $50 Telstra plan to the new 12GB for $50 plan, with free visual voicemail :)

  • Does anyone know if the data-free streaming also includes unmetered use of Spotify?

    • Telstra offers that for Apple music. Optus offers quota free Spotify.

  • Non-Telstra customer here.
Tried to negotiate on 24x7 but they refused to budge on the website prices.
Chose the Post-paid with mobile option in the chat box.
