omg was i addicted to runescape. i'd be thinking about that shit 24/7. i remember waking up in the middle of the night and i'd sneak into the computer room and just play. I was caught by my parents a few times, but totally worth it. This was like the first gen runescape though. great game.

      • +1

i literally did this too. sneak out to the family PC. plug in something in the model's dialup headphone jack to stop the dialing noise. play all night until 6am sneak back in bed.

    2. Pokemon Yellow - childhood defining game

    3. Final Fantasy VII - Pinnacle of badass-ness for a kid in the late 90's

    4. League of Legends - Despite its many faults the competitive aspect of this game led to great moments

    5. Command and Conquer(1995) - Introduction to PC gaming, timeless classic

  • +11

    Secret of Mana

      • I thought 2 was way better, except for the ending which was naff.

      • +1

        AOE - SO good.

        • +1

Yeah anytime this question comes up my #1 answer is AOE2, and to be honest (since I'm old enough), AOE1 probably scrapes in the top 5 too.

          1. AOE2
          2. Lineage II
          3. Civilisation (all versions)
          4. AOE1
          5. Master of Orion II maybe?

Basing on the amount of lost hours invested in each game.

    Assassins Creed

  • +4

    Starcraft 1 and 2
    Battlefield 2
    COD MW
    Duke Nukem

    Most disappointing: Diablo 3

I'd also kill to get my hands on v3.01 of Strategic Conquest. Old, but… cannot be located.

    • D3 wasn't THAT bad, the campaign was quite challenging and game play was decent.

Not where near as sophisticated as d2, but saddest part was end game content nonexistent. Not sure about now though lol

      • Lots of endgame content now. It is actually an amazing game. When it first released it was a major turd. Too bad I went and had a kid and have no time to play now that the game is good :D

        • That actually sounds really interesting.

But if I jump back in now, I'll probably be a joke amongst all the other players hahaha.

        • @bao28: Not really. They have seasons now that last 2-3 months which means everyone starts on equal footing. Takes a couple of days to get to max level and there are lots of fun activities that help you gear up. It's actually much easier to find gear to support your build than it was before. Hence people can gear up and get powerful within a couple of months.

You don't HAVE to play seasons of course but then you would be in the game with more powerful players. Season is a good way to start as everyone will be gearing up with you. Once you finish the season you can transfer your character to off season play (keep him permanently) if you wish.

    Star Control 2

Homeworld - started playing 11 years ago (when it was already in the discount "classic games" box), paused for many years, restarted this month. Yet to finish 😊

    Halo

    Dune

Also: Death Track, Wing Commander, Elite, M1 Tank Platoon, LHX, Command and Conquer

    • I've heard Home world is amazing im going to pick it up and give it a go

    • +1

AAoW was one of my first games too.

Fun memories….I recall exploiting the game by fighting battles with one Archer. The enemies would approach in one line and get killed by the Archer but only a few. So I retreated, rinse repeat. It reduced morale but killed the enemy with no loss to my troops.

I also loved AAoW at Sea.

      • I played Ancient Art of War on both IBM PCs and Apple… II and possibly Mac I think? Many fond memories. I love changing troop formations before each engagement for maximum effectiveness. Knights backed by archers would slaughter the much quicker though otherwise hapless barbarians.

I never got to finish AAoW at Sea — thankfully it's now available as freeware!

      • Sorry to harp on about this, but I discovered I can play AAoW at Sea… online — and did so for the first time in 20-something years. Awesome.

        • Hi…I tried this many many years ago, I think I was using DOSBox.

But the game was super fast and I was unable to reduce speed at the DOSBox level.

          Did you play OK?

        • @tsunamisurfer: Played pretty much like I remember it, speed included. They ran DOSBox in a browser window. Worth a try : )

    • Only comment mentioning Dune, classic of the classic.

  • +1

If I clear my head of nostalgic thoughts:

    Morrowind
    Pokemon blue/red
    Zelda ocarina of Time
    Conkers bad fur Day
    Duke Nukem 64

Lol plus a ton more, but I challenge you to dispute any of them.

    • +1

      Morrowind! Best ever

  • +5

    All on PC.

Battlefield 2 - The Pizza Hut deal remains the first major deals I got from Ozbargain. For $15 I played this game for 6 years.
Elite / Frontier / First Encounters - Its a bit unfair to list them all together but I loved them all and they were of the same franchise.
Civilization II - Still play it today on and off…..so much fun without the cool graphics.
Counter Strike - My first multiplayer FPS. The simplicity of the game and maps were great fun.
Command and Conquer - Also one of the most fun RTS I have ever played.

    Honourable mentions :

    • GTA
    • Red Alert
    • Medieval Total War.
    • BF 1942
    • CS how could i have forgot that!

Im surprised how many people prefer C&C to Red Alert i loved both but Red Alert 1 was up there for game of the year in 1996 (i think it might of even won in some places)

    • 850 hours on CSS as a kid, loved jailbreak.

  • Blazblue Central Fiction
    Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen
    Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late
    Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2

    • Was PS4 your first ever console?

      • Nope all of these on PC. Never had a Playstation, had a Wii instead which I sold off recently so no consoles in the house anymore :)

        • Fair enough. Did you only start gaming a few years ago?

        • @lostn: Yeah, considering strict parents meant no gaming for the longest time, and prior to this year I had no computer for 3 years, only a crappy iPad :( Honestly still surprised I managed to survive that long

  • +3

    starcraft
    lemmings
    duck hunt
