Rugged Tablet or Phone for GPS / Navigation / NAVIONICS App

Hi All,

Firstly, some backstory:

Recently got a badass little aluminium boat with a friend a ~4m Super Duck (Zodiac shape). Expected to have to replace the engine and get little range from it until I did.
Instead it turned out to be absolutely unsinkable, and after some maintenance the old engine on it hasn't skipped a beat.

Why I need you my Ozbargain brothers, sisters and jv:

We already have a Wi-Fi fishfinder, and was hoping to get some help in choosing a Tablet (preferred due to screen size) or phone to use as navigation for the Navionics App.
However I am unsure what to get which can do the following:

  • Good GPS signal
I get the impression my phone's GPS is nowhere as good as that of a normal GPS unit - or is this just me?

  • Preferably Rugged / waterproof
we could build a case for it, or even just use one of those clear covers, but obviously have a higher risk of water damage

  • Works well enough under sunlight
understand it would never be as bright as a proper GPS unit, but I would want it to be good enough - I would not be sure what to expect from a chinese brand tablet

  • Priced on the cheaper end, can't really afford more than $300.
unsure if there is a benefit in getting a $300 tablet rather than a $70 one? The App will work just as well on 1GB of ram, so the increased price would only be for screen quality / GPS unit / ruggedness

So far the only that fit the bill seemed to be the Xperia Z3 Compact Tablet 16GB Wi-Fi for $249 - But have no idea if the GPS signal would have been good enough on it.

Hope you can help :)

If you are going out into the sea/lake then get a floating case (e.g. something like this) just in case it goes overboard.

I don't know much about GPS accuracy but the z3 but one review said there was a "difference of 2.4%" compared to a Garmin Edge 500. No idea how good or bad that is :P It also supports GPA,A-GPS and GLONASS which I take is more than most other tablets (not sure if you can take advantage of them all).

    • Thanks fiximol, yeah from what I've read there should not be a reason for the GPS to be different, but from experience with phones they appear to be less reliable than navigation units. Might have just been crappy phones lol.
