Decent smart phones or deals

Hi guys,

Will be buying a phone for my mother in law, she just needs to be able to use facebook/whatsapp for international calls. Heard some old phones don't support the latest Whatsapp app.

Need suggestions as to the cheapest decent deals, brands don't matter, preferably $300 or below. Grey phone should be ok too as she doesn't in Australia.

Will be flying out in about 63 days if that makes any difference (for GST purposes).

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. :)

I know of a deal but delivery is 64 days away. Sorry

    • what?

Its to say the deals usually come from the grey market, and stuff shipping from Asia can take a long time.
However, I'm sure Loose Butt meant it in a comedic form.

On another note, it's been 42 days since I bought my Apple Xiaomi Mijia Pen, still waiting, was told to keep waiting.

          Thank you!!

Ouch, for some reason mine took slightly longer as well. Hopefully should come soon though mine ran out of ink during the first week.

  • Get her a Note 8!

No but maybe try looking into Motorola phones, they seem to be fairly popular budget phones with decent specs, or maybe even older Galaxy phones?

See the Mid-range mobile phone poll for some suggestions

for the record, my mother uses a Moto G4 Plus, running Nougat now and with the latest security updates.

She likes installing all kinds of weird junk on the phone so I thought mobile security was important, hence having a Moto would be advantageous as it has long-running patches and updates.

    • Thanks mate

    A few things…

    • TRS will only work if the purchase is within 60 days of departure. You have the next few days to do some research :)

    • Buying grey stock most likely makes you ineligible for TRS unless you buy it from a local retailer with an ABN on its tax invoice

    • To claim TRS, your purchases from a single business must total more than $300, which seems to be above your budget. You'll have to either raise your budget or buy something else from the same business (can be separate invoices) to make the total over $300

For more information, visit the official TRS website. Also use the TRS claim web app to pre-fill your claim to save time at the airport. Pre-filling the claim online gives you a QR code that you can print or present on your phone at the TRS counter and it makes the process much quicker (less data entry for TRS people). I did this last year at Sydney airport days before Christmas and was in and out in no time.

    • Check out the Motorola G5 Plus, Review here. It's a new phone (released this year) so Whatsapp will be supported for years to come. Can be had for $342 at Mobileciti, a store with a good reputation and has a retail store in Parramatta for pickup if necessary. Australia stock and local retailer so no issues for TRS.

Have a look at Mobileciti for other phones as well. Since it can be multiple items that make up the $300, you can just buy a case or other accessories to make the minimum. They also participate in lots of eBay '% off' sales so you might get lucky in the coming weeks and give you more phones to choose from in terms of price range.

Not affiliated with Mobileciti in any way, I've gone with them for multiple purchases (online, eBay and in store) and never had any issues.

    Good luck!

    • Thank you for the suggestions! Will keep an eye on G5+.

    and don't worry about gst.

  • I recently asked for advice very similar to this, & ended up choosing the Motorola G5+ that was highly recommended to me & I love it! Mine was $329 via eGlobal on eBay, but there may be better offers available elsewhere too.
