I dont get. Why can't I just add my phone to wifi network? Why need to go through this usb?

    • +4

This turns your phone or laptop into a wifi router, basically a pocket router. It's for situations where you're travelling and there's no wifi, but you have your own Internet enabled device and want to share the connection.

      • ah got it thx

      • What's the reception and range going to be like?

    • +2

There really aren't many use cases for this device, especially as it needs special software making other methods more convenient.

Phones and laptops have the ability to hotspot, which acts as a router.

      • +1

Does it require special software on the host? It says it creates the network automatically, which to me makes it sound like an excellent cheap black hat tool - just stick it into an exposed usb port of device on network you want access to.

Edit: Requires user interaction on the host device. That's a shame.

        • You mean like I cant secretly plug it to the work computer and use free wifi at work? thats a shame

        • @limucat: Well, more along the lines of 'plug it into work computer and get access to the work network from another device via wifi'. Or, replace work with competitor's network, bank, shop, research computer, whatever.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work like that though.

        • windows 10 has the feature inbuilt

      • Technically speaking not every wifi card has an AP functionality and even less cards can simultaneously act as a client and an access point.

So the use case for this card is that you connect to wifi say in hotel which allows only 1 device for free with your inbuilt wifi card and share it to as many devices as you want with this dongle.

But, as said before, there's nothing special about this dongle, any Realtek/Ralink based USB dongle can do the same and cost roughly the same as well.

I think it's for people without WiFi, but with a wired connection.

      • This device isn't a wireless dongle/adapter for a wired computer.

        • +1

No, but it creates a wireless network.

        • @moore22:

So does a phone, laptop or wireless adapter.

This product has a use, its just very specific/limited.

        • It actually is a wireless dongle which with software from Xiaomi can work as a Wifi hotspot. Just like every other Realtek based Wifi dongle.

        • @DainB:

It says in the description Note: Mi WiFi adapter not a wireless network card though.

        • @samfisher5986:
Not sure who you're arguing with here…
No one said that a phone, laptop or wireless adapter doesn't create a wireless network.

        • @samfisher5986:

It also says 8GB USB drive which is clearly not there, so do your research.

There's switch in MiWifi app to set it up as AP or client, you can search screenshots on the internet if you want. And yes, you'll need them because app is in Chinese.

  • There's two different models of these, one is just plain USB Wifi and second has 8GB storage and can work as kind of wireless USB drive.

Description talks about second but links to first.

  • Description in OP is from the wrong item. There is another Xiaomi WiFi adapter which is slightly larger (and more expensive) and also has 8GB of internal storage, the linked item does not.

    • hi,dear gazlaz,

      Thank you for your reminder.
