Buy Switch Now or Wait until Christmas?

So I've seen a few deals lately for the switch and just not sure if I should go for it yet.

When you take into consideration the additional costs just to get started…. buy a game, microSD card and a pro controller it's not a cheap console.

Obviously no one has a crystal ball to look into the future, but it's pretty safe to assume there will be some console deals leading up to Christmas, my instinct tells me to just wait it out.

I did consider picking up the refurbished Wii-U, but doesn't really make sense to me, you can add another $150 or so and have a brand new, current gen console…

Any thoughts?

  • I'm waiting for Christmas. Surely there will be some Christmas sales with the Switch. I'm tempted to wait even longer for a Zelda bundle, but looking at the new Mario bundle it probably wouldn't be worth it anyway. I think worse case scenario you will just have to pay an average price if there are no sales. No way it will go up in price. I liked the Wii U, it had a fair few good games on it but I'd definitely buy the Switch and maybe a second hand Wii U later on if you are keen on any of the games that don't get ported.

If you can afford it, why not enjoy it now?

I would say that $380 would be a fairly safe price point, it would be unlikely to go much further below that.

It would be unlikely that Nintendo would offer a promotion that would reduce the price as the Switch is selling fairly well.
There is a Odyssey bundle being released but it's retailing for the full price of a switch and the Mario Odyssey game.

At the store level we've seen discounts of $20 or the console bundled with games for $499.
I would predict that will be the standard up til Christmas and the Target and Big W would probably sell the Odyssey bundle for $499.

At the eBay level, it's usually a maximum of 20% off selected retailers or 15% off sitewide.

So some possible console only deals would be:
    Big W\Target - $449 + 15% off eBay = $381.65 + postage
    EB Games - $469 + 20% off selected eBay stores = $375.20 + postage
    Gamesmen - $498.95 + 20% off selected eBay stores = $399.16 (inc postage)
Kogan may offer $360 - $375 but with limited stock

  • I'm also waiting.
First consoles had manufacturing issues (joycon de-syncing, dock scratches the screen) so I imagine newer stock will be better quality.
Plus I really believe the price will go down.

I'd be getting one for Odyssey, if there are already games you want to play then you don't really need to wait until Christmas.

I noticed in jb hi-fi in Sydney the other day they had out of stock signs, which surprised me as I assumed they were in ready supply.
If the supply is a bit limited, I would be surprised if there are better deals at Xmas.
But assuming it is for you to play, not as a gift, I'd say either get it in the next deal from eBay etc. or wait for Xmas/post-Xmas sales if you are happy to take the delay.
I would be surprised if the best deal in the next 6 months was $100 better than what you can get today, so how much is that worth?

Naw, Nintendo are famous for not manufacturing enough units for everything they sell. Presumably it keeps prices high and means they don't lose margins in production and save on inventory costs.

Buy a Wii U, mod it, play all the games for an outlay of about $200.

The Switch doesn't have enough unique games (that I want to play at least) to make it worth while.

  • I bought it for $390 and am really happy with it, I thought I would be sad due to it being an impulse buy and sooo pricey but I really like it. So much so I don't mind that I paid the premium compared to the cheaper price or a bundle price would be closer to Christmas time.

My guess is if you feel fine with losing about $120 buying it now and enjoying it now instead of saving about $120 due to some sort of bundle or sale price then go for it.

I'm waiting too, but after Xmas. Boxing Day sales 😀👍 hopefully I can pick one up in time

  • Wait til Xmas. If you are on friendly terms with your local Eb folk, they may even tell you exactly when the Xmas deals come out. A few years back, they told me what deals were coming out at Xmas, let me put a preorder on a different item so I could start paying it off, and swapped the balance to the Xmas deal pack when it came in store. (Lesson is be nice your friendly nieghbourhood EB folk and they will be nice to you).

  • Bought one preowned via Gumtree for 400 with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Happy man ever since with the purchase of Zelda. And with Mario Odyssey just around the corner I would say just go for it. 380 is the lowest I've seen around for a brand-new from EB Ebay but I also doubt Xmas deals will beat that. That or EB would chuck in extra games (hopefully something worth playing) for 400-460. Fingers crossed!

  • OK so I came across a deal I couldn't pass up. Switch + BOTW pre-owned for $300 with warranty from Cash Converters. Will be thoroughly wiping the unit and controls down with cleaning alcohol prior to using :)
