OzBargain "The Pool Room"

So a quick search yielded nothing, but has it ever been proposed that OzBargain introduce an "elevated privileges" Forum area a la Whirlpool's The Pool Room?
I've recently been re-admitted on Whirlpool, but I don't think it really works there. There's just too many disparate users to form a community. I think they almost need to add Pool Rooms for each subforum.
However, it occurred to me that OzB already has that community feeling in its threads (on the whole) and a "The Pool Room" type concept could work better here since the userbase all come here for one main reason.

Maybe there already exists such a place but I've yet to attain such greatness?

  • Something like Everything Else forum but only available to selected group of people? What do you think the selection criteria would be? How would one earn that privilege?

      Hand selected by jv?

        No thanks.

That's the basement not the pool room!

    • +1

      Yeah, I guess…
I was thinking it could be a place to ask stickier questions that draw heated debate or trolling in a space where the selection criteria increase the chances of more considered discussion.
But now that I've said that, you risk concentrating the constructive commenters to the private room and thereby concentrating the less savoury commenters in the public forums! Overall a negative on the public perception of the forums!
I'm talking myself out of this being a good idea! :-)

Selection criteria, based on something like a rolling tally of Plus votes on forum comments maybe.
Gotta keep up your activity as well as maintaining a high level of appreciated contribution.
You'd have access to the stats on that I presume to determine a suitable level.

I wouldn't limit it to plus votes. Popular comments aren't always the most constructive, but more importantly neg comments aren't always bad. Sometimes the harsh truth can be neg a lot, but I feel still contributes to constructive discussion.

In short, populism isn't always right :)

        "less savoury"

        Solution: add salt.

Just sin bin the 'activists' / tin foil hat nutters and you'll have civilised discussions

        • I'd rather hear from people with some beliefs ,

1 rule of Ozbargain pool room kicks in

  • +2

I am in favour of this pool-room… We can chill back, have a good time…

Maybe posts can also be un-moderated and disappear after 24 hours of no activity… so its like what happens in the pool room stays in the pool room…

    Clothing optional.

    • +1

Wah! I'm getting visions of intentional/unintentional brown eyes when picturing "naked pool". Shudder :(

    • +3

      Clothing optional.

      Way ahead of you. :)

  • I had to go look up what the pool room is on Whirlpool. I'm not cool enough to get in

    • +1

Yeah, this is really just a Brag Thread for me! :-)

      • I got in there once. Than all of a sudden my access was gone. Don't know what I did/cbf investigating what to do to get back in.

        • There's a little emoticon style "face voting system" that I never noticed until I investigated further.. Essentially just like the +/- voting system here for comments.
Once you get a high enough score, you get access to the Pool Room…
If you get a few negs, then your score drops and your access is revoked.

I'm not trying to get in there either…but just happened again this month.

        • @scubacoles:

Oh yes, know of those well enough (I'd have to be blind to miss them :p ), but it's all the different rankings I don't know.

Is it anything like hell0's suggestion above (clothing optional)?

        • @tomsco:
          I missed them..

Nah, It's just a member only subforum with random discussion similar to the OzBargaiun Everything Else forum https://www.ozbargain.com.au/forum/808

  • Count me in

We've had this discussion a few times before, scotty doesnt want segmentation within the community.

I've bought plenty of bargains that've gone straight to the pool room.
And those not a bargain - tell 'em they're dreaming.

There is a section for moderators, and the helpers (i forget the official name for people who can make changes above a general user), but it's mostly filled with announcements/feature discussion

  • Official name for people above a general user:-

    I believe it's 'asskisser'

  • Seeing as my jokes seem to end a thread

My self-esteem is starting to really take a hit

Just saying, it's not the first time I've been frogmarched out of a club
    Luckily I tend to bounce
