Think I Have a Virus?

Hi Guys,

Recently (within the past month or so) I've been getting pop-ups that override even VLC playet 'set on top' though I noticed they only were around when Chrome was open, however the blocksite add-on I used in firefox has a notification system that is the same shape, size and position. Anti-virus search got nothing, the clog/setting leads no where to stop it, and only one other person on the internet had the same issue, but never said how they fixed it. I haven't installed anything new, so not sure where it came from.

Today I also discovered ads on subeta, that have previously been blocked, and ads in the middle of videos on fb.

What is happening?

You can disable these ad pop-ups in your Chrome settings.

But really, The Pirate Bay? In 2017? Really? You're just begging for viruses.

just wondering what has happened to pirate bay to make it unsafe now?

Something has highjacked your browser. Try search for highjackthis and run it.

Some free scanning software to try: Malwarebytes free and Superantispyware run those two (one after the other)and they will pick up most annoyances.

For the first screenshot, it looks like somehow a site has gotten into your allowed notifications list in Chrome. To nip that one in the bud, remove it from that safe list or disable notifications entirely: https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/3220216?co=GENIE.Pl…

As for the video ads, not sure… what are you using to block them usually? I use Pi-Hole and ads start reappearing when something messes with the server running it (switched off, cable unplugged, DNS issues)

  • yeah asking for trouble if you still use Pirate Bay :/

In relation to the video ads, recently ABP is not working as effectively because websites have found a way around it.

    See below example: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/330618

ABP let companies pay to have their ads whitelisted. It's a practice they've been doing for many years. It's why people recommend uBlock Origin.

      • Didn't know that. Also didn't know Ch10 had money to spare for such things. Despite it being a catch22!

        • Ten probably didn't pay then off. The authors behind the ad delivery tech probably did. It's a complex issue.

  • I got that a while back - its not a virus its an 'add-on' which chrome allows
I had to search through the settings , find it and disable it.

As ever the advice above is good.

  • Is porn add yeah? D/L the game and popups. No pirate

    1. Clean install Chrome,

    2. Install a ad blocker plug-in e.g. Adblock

    Use ublockorigin

  • Download ADWCleaner and run a search for hidden pests
