  • Can anyone tell me if there is any point in having 16gb ram in this configuration

    • +2

yes. I would not pay the same price for 8GB of RAM.

      • Please read what is written before answering. Also keep in mind ram uses power and this one has ddr4 and not the low voltage one. If the whole system is not powerful enough to do the tasks which require 16gb ram then I don't see the point of getting one. One is better off with 8gb ram and spare money in the pocket for other things.

Sorry my bad. There is no full stop or question mark in your original post. So was it a question or statement?

If you can find setup with identical spec, but only with 8GB RAM, and cheaper price, then you should post it here, instead of questioning why this deal offer 16GB RAM instead of 8.

ps: I am an embedded software developer for IoT, who runs multiple instances of software development IDE, and web browsers with JS. My normal RAM usage is around 9GB most of the time. Besides graphic card for gaming purposes, this laptop spec meets all my need. Not that I am getting it though.

        • @ausdday: thanks. I just wanted to know if there is a use of 16gb.
The one below would be good for day to day use

    • wow my 6 year old i5 ruins this CPU..

      • You're probably comparing a desktop CPU with a laptop one. That's not what I meant.

What I meant is that the 8th gen ultralow voltage CPU's have been given double the cores. You can buy a quad-core 8th gen i5 laptop for less than a dual-core 7th gen i7, and yet get 1.5x as much performance. Previously you had to pay a premium to get a quad-core CPU in a laptop (HQ models), but now that's standard.

Previously, you had to wait for 4 generation changes to get the performance jump which exists between 7th gen and 8th gen.

        • Yep, my 3360qm is faster then this 7500U, 5 year old laptop. What am I doing wrong..

        • @Den: ah, ok. But you're comparing a full speed quad core to a dual core ultralow voltage. The new ultralow voltage ones have high speed minus high power consumption.

        • @Make it so: yep, agree.
          i7-3630QM vs i7-8550U - new one is ~5-10% quicker :-)

I am just trying to justify a purchase for myself and it's hard :-)

  • I have low spec version,BTW it has the best keyboard I ever used on a laptop (10+laptops)

    • Can you tell if the body is aluminium?
