iPhone 6S Refurbished?

Hi all!

I am looking for a refurbished iPhone 6S 128gb. Purely financial reasons.

Are there any good places to buy one? I saw in the US the Apple Store sells refurbished iPhones, but not in Australia.

I've seen some on eBay, but seems a lot (most?) are grey imports.

Be careful of refurbs, you're better off with a used one.

The TouchID/finger doesn't work on refurbs. There's a pretty big international market for people to steal normal working iPhones and then refurbish them with unofficial parts, usually shipping the devices to China or Malaysia/Local Dodgey Phone Repair Stores from western countries.

There's a way you can check the device's ID and see on Apple's system if it had a previous owner, or was reported stolen. But Apple took a stupid decision to remove this official check from its website, meaning they've essentially gone backwards on their promise to genuine buyers for making their devices thief-resistant, and instead have given the phone thieves the upper hand, willingly, aided them.

What they do is replace the TouchID module and reflash the chip so that it doesn't get locked out of iTunes. Its an inexpensive third-party module, not to mention third-party housing (if scratched), screen (if broken), batteries (if depleted), and clone-boxes that can be shrink-wrapped to mimic a factory sealed Brand New unit. So they essentially buy a $1,000 stolen iPhone for $150… then throw another $50 of parts… and another $50 of labour/advertising for a total cost of ~$250. And they typically sell them for around $800, which is a cool $600 profit. When you multiply that on a higher scale, say 100 refurbs a month, a crooked Phone Seller can make a cool $50,000 profit monthly. Don't ask how I know.

    • Thanks for the heads up! I don't mind Used if it's passed a sound inspection process.

Digging around in Whois, I found one refurbished seller that is the retail side of a Mazuma-style business.

Wish Officeworks etc would just sell them at a decent price.

  • Kangal will sell you one in the car park at 11:30pm tonight ;)

    • haha yes! Exactly what eBay for iPhones feels like, dodgy as.
