    Anything ex brisbane?

    • +1

Did some checking and ex Bris appears to be around $1100.

You could possibly try and overlap with TA’s other post to try and get cheap return flights to Sydney also?

  • Yeah that's cheap

  • Who the hell is Aunt Betty?

    • I have used them before without any problem. I have used a number of online flight purchasing sites and this is just another one. The only bad experience I had was that I got some suspicious card activity after booking with one other company but I don't know if it was related.

    • +1

Pretty sure they're owned by flight centre and they will match if you take in a quote, problem is they probably won't last for long!

    • +1

Take a screenshot and ask Flight Center to price match it. They’ve done so for me in the past.

    • +2

I just booked with them. Use the coupon code "SSNORTHAMERICA45" to get further $45 off.

    • +2

Aunt Betty is a Flight Centre Group company just like BYO JET. Flight Centre will 'beat themselves' but occasionally you will have a smart TA who advises "we can't beat our own companies!"

  • +1

    Lowest ever to NYC?

  • +1

I hate how one way flights are nearly the same as return

    • I just booked one for ~650 one way on UA, which is still fairly cheap.

      • Yeh it is, I'll take a look cheers.

  • So how do we know it's actually Qantas & not codeshare with AA?

      • AH good, the main flight the QF<low number> is Qantas
The Dallas->NY is AA, but that's ok it's internal. So long as they let you into the (crappy) AA lounge in Dallas, it'd been ok.
        http://info.flightmapper.net/flight/Qantas_QF_4361

        • agree - the DFW lounge is shit. guacomole and carrots with some form of soup….and 2 drink vouchers!

    • +2

Generally, QF with 4 digits would be code share.

      • +1

Not true. Most QLink flights are 4 digits, but begin with 1 or 2.

        • International 4 digit is code share. The Qlink 717s aren't Qantas, it's Cobram airlines in Qantas colours.

        • @Expon: Cobham*

And they’re effectively Qlink as far as passengers are concerned.

    • It's codeshared flights with AA for the US domestic legs.

    • I flew to the US recently via AA and found them at equivalent or better to Qantas.

      • no meal or booze….not the same for a 4-5hr cross country flight.

        • Sorry. I missed this. I should have added that I was in Business…

    • IIRC the only 'internal' Qantas flight in the US and A is LA-JFK, on a 747.
      From Dallas, a codeshare.

    What the hell? So cheap!

Flying onto and out of Newark, not JFK.

    • So?

      • You like jersey?

        • +3

No idea. Never been to NY. Why do I care which airport as long as it's not too far and costing me extra to go to my accommodation.

        • +2

@Sharp: JFK is on the train line, Newark is in a different state.

        • +2

@supabrudda: Newark is on the train line too. Direct from Penn Station which is mid town NYC.

        • +1

@Sharp: they are all about 20-30min to the airport…there are 3 airports so exactly, who cares.

  • +1

Not booking, but crazy prices for NYC! Even for other months, 900 something is amazing for any airline.. Let alone Qantas.

  • +3

Found some dates in the nsw school holidays 13th April - 27th April for family of 4 for $3602. Spring in NY, crazy price.

  • +20

GUYS, if u book using Aunt Betty (who also is the cheapest atm), use promo code: SSNORTHAMERICA45 $45 off!!! I just booked return for $811!!

  • Do you need a passport to book?

    • no, not through Aunt Betty

  • +3

Just a heads up Aunt Betty can be a nightmare to deal with if you need a refund for whatever reason. Had a Singapore Airlines flight cancelled by the airline and took about 6 weeks after Singapore told me they had refunded the flight that they eventually refunded under threat.

Also the staff aren't Australian, they respond with a different airline booking address so it looks to leverage off another company

    Best of luck!

Oh and you can only contact them via email if overseas, no direct dial number provided for outside of Australia.

    • +4

Doesn't sound too different to an experience you'd expect when booking via a third party though

The thing i like about NYC is it goes down almost as far as it goes up.

The other thing i like is i'm not there.

    • Please explain

      • +1

It goes a little something like this.

  • -1

Why don't you book through the Qantas Official Site instead? It was the same price before, but now the price has gone up.

    • +2

It was the same price before, but now the price has gone up.

      Well that's why then?

  • Accom suggestions? From New Wark airport?

    • CheapTickets use the promo code

Accor got single or twin? 3/4/5 star?

      • Normally 4 star kinda person, but NYC looks $$

        • What do you mean by $$?

$250 AUD a night is pretty cheap for New York.

        • @knick007: really? Where at? I was under the assumption anywhere within walking distance is $400+ per night.

        • @tunzafun001: what do you mean by walking distance ?

          When are you going ?

        • @knick007: I don't really know to be honest, but I've been told to stay midtown?
          What would you recommend? Cheers

        • +1

@tunzafun001: Midtown is perfectly fine. I usually stay in SoHo.

If you’re happy staying a little further out you could stay in Brooklyn and take the train into the city each day. There’s nothing wrong with that. I’ll be doing that next time I go.

It’s just a different area of the city.

I’d highly recommend checking out the hundreds of threads on NYC on whirlpool travel forums.

        • @knick007: agree - midtown is well located and walking distance to most things (walking distance means 30min walk +)…I liked the Villages and SoHo and meat packing for night time. The view from Brooklyn is amazing.

  • Good work!

    Hey, I'm Walking Here!

Amazing deal and very well timed! Was just this week looking at SYD-NYC flights with Qantas for April (travelling with a 9 month old, so aiming for the A380 via LAX), and it was looking expensive.

    Booked the trip multi-city with 4 non-stop legs in April/May - SYD > DFW + DFW > EWR + EWR > DFW + DFW > SYD - 2 adults + 1 infant @ $2339 on Wotif.

    • why didn't you go through the deal would have only been $853x2?

      • Flying with a 9 month old, we want to break it up as much as humanly possibly. This way we get 2 days in Dallas in both directions.

The straight-up return flights did not have the best layovers.. 5.5 hours in Dallas on the way over, and only ~50mins on the way back.. That wouldn't be nice.

        • +2

          totally understandable :)

  • +7

they also have virgin flights for $2 more (did same dates as above OP) and that goes to JFK =p

  • Dam… wish I hadn’t booked Bali for the June school holidays now :-(

  • Do you mean July?

  • No, we are in Queensland - ours start on 15 June

  • +2

Thanks for this! have been wanting to go for years so just booked.

  • +7

Thanks heaps!!! Just booked a week away! Gonna drive down to DC and be Smithsonian nerds for a week!!!!!!!
And stop in Philly for a cheesesteak and the Mutter Museum!!!
A lovely educational week with 24 hours on a flight to recount the knowledge gained.

    • +1

The train is easy and cheap… it’s hard driving from NyC

      • +1

Agreed about the train — and if you get to leave from Grand Central, it is worth visiting no matter what — but I never found driving in NYC any harder than, say, Sydney. It's a CF at 8am and 5pm, but otherwise, I must have been fairly lucky.
What a city, and what a bargain!

    • I would seriously suggest not driving… It's a nice drive but take the train if you only have a week?

    • Go to Macy's in Philly. Yes, I know that the 'original' Macy's is in Manhattan, but the one in Philly is epic!
Also, if you get a chance, head into Amish country. It really is worth it!

      • Whereabouts is Amish country? I've seen docos on them. Do they let outside people interact with them?
I never considered the train, but having a car gives you options like outlet malls and Costco!!!
I bought 40 bottles of Kirkland water for $2.99 + tax earlier this year!

        • +2

Lancaster County in PA is Amish country, and it was only when I went there that I started to understand why people never want to leave there. It is just beautiful countryside.
Make your first stop the Discover Lancaster Visitors Center, it is on Greenfield Road, which is the main road (or, as 'main' as roads get in that area) once you get off the Fwy.
The towns we visited were Bird in Hand and Intercourse and no, I am not making those names up!
There is a varying level of interaction with the Amish, some are very reserved, some quite friendly, and some of the Amish either have their own, or work in, retail outlets and the markets.
I ended up sitting on a bench outside a General Store when an Amish gentleman, who had driven there in his sulkie, sat next to me and nodded hello. He seemed quite friendly but talkative, he was not…
Much easier to drive. You can go where and when you like and there are some small roads to navigate, though you need to drive slowly and watch for horse-drawn vehicles. I would think that there would be bus tours, but I like driving in that part of the world.
As they say in that part of the world, have a blessed day, English…

        • @branners:
Thanks! That sounds like a great plan! I'll definitely add that to a place to check out on the way! looking forward to intercourse!

  • Pity no deals from Melbourne! :-(

    • Deal was updated by OP now and includes Melbourne FYI.

      • Thanks hamza, I can indeed see the fares now. Just to wait and see if VA/DL match now, as they often tend to do. Want to try and reach Velocity Platinum :)

  • +5

If anyone wants '10 Things to do in NYC for FREE', which is a piece I wrote for a travel website some years ago, send me a DM. I can't take advantage of this fare, but maybe I can save a few people some pennies in NYC!

  • +2

    I prefer Ansett Australia

  • Can I Stop in LA for a couple of weeks on the way to NY, or not allowed?

    • +2

I was able to get flights with Virgin stopping on the way home for a few days in LA. Cost slightly more at around $900 :)

    • +1

Just ask the pilot, they may be a good person and drop you off. Be sure to give them a 5 star rating if they do

  • I saw some $890 fares from Brisbane to New York but when I clicked through, they weren't even available :/

  • Some fares are lowest booked via BudgetAir.com.au…. anyone has any experience with this mob? care to share?

    • I booked this trip with them for 4, paying by visa credit card is free with them. I had an issue with the finding the booking reference number and they replied with the answer in 12 hours. I then checked in online on the Qantas website and can see the booking. But it seems economy ordinary seat selection cost $35 extra?

      • -2

You'd think with full service airlines, there's no fee to select seats?!! Unless Qantas trying to screw their customers!! I wonder if these fees apply for bookings made on the other resellers like aunt Betty, STA etc. Thanks for posting so we'll be aware of this underhand practice.

  • -1

Anyone going on 24/4/18 with Qantas? I'm going by myself - seeking company to share room (female) or taxi to NY from Newark airport. PM please 😊

    • +1

      I can wear a wig.

    • y tho

  • How long do these flight deals generally last?

  • Looks like it's over :/
I was looking last night and it was 873pp
    Now it's 1268

edit: Looks like it still works for return Syd/JFK, but I was looking at Syd to JFK, then JFK to LAX, then LAX to Sydney. That was 873 last night and now it's 1268 for the same dates :(
