New iPad on a Plan

I need to get a new iPad as my old ipad 3 has stopped working properly. I was going to just spend a few hundred on a second hand ipad air off gumtree but then I came across a deal this deal from Optus - $35 a month. Is this a good deal ?

Any other deals compare ? I don't care if its with any carrier, to be honest I don't even care about the amount of data as I would more than likely just use my wifi at home.

  • https://www.whistleout.com.au/Tablets for quick comparisons,

I went with the 128gb ipad at $40p/m ($35+$5 for the tablet) on Optus

I have data share sims connected in other devices and shared with family, (once-off data share sims are no longer available, some people have success with calling them up and hounding them if they're on an old plan, I recall someone saying on ozbargain that they were able to use a prepaid data sim and access the data pool, and its remained active? see here : https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/4735328/redir)

    edit:

    see old threads:

also, you should try the newer ipad pros in store as they have 120Hz displays

If you're mostly using wifi the better to get a wifi only version from ebay/gumtree IMO, rather than be stuck on a 2 year payment plan including data you dont use.

  • Thanks Skramit - I suppose the only thing that is a bonus is that I don't have to pay upfront and can pay over 2 years. Especially coming up to Christmas the budget probably wouldn't handle an outlay of $1000 upfront Decisions !!

I try avoid buying on plans whenever I can avoid it. It's one more long-term and unavoidable financial commitment. If you can't afford one now, don't buy it. If you can afford it now, buy it outright. Buying on a plan though? It breaks in 3 months' time, you'll be stuck paying for it for another 21 months. Your needs/wants changes? Also stuck paying for it because you can't sell it if it's on a plan. Etc.

    • iPads aren't that expensive anymore… They start at $449 for a 32gb wifi only model. If you're only going to use it on wifi at home paying $449 is a lot less than the $840 over 24 months from the plan you linked to above. Perhaps you could find a seller that offers afterpay to break the outlay cost up a bit?
