Why are Aussie drama series so inferior to the US and British?
A vicious self fulfilling cycle.
The free to air channels don't invest enough money into product, they need to turn a profit, think of what their advertisers want to market, and also say that Oz series never rate well. Then they pressure writers as to how it should be made, they'll only invest in certain types of stories. Which then don't rate well because the audience is more sophisticated and better catered for by US/UK material.
It's cheaper to buy a series of West Wing, Buffy than invest in local content.
The free trade agreement with America made by John Howard also had a massive impact on Australian made content.

I agree with your assessment. They don't interest me. They're cheap to make and get ratings alas.
