It's basically a repeat of this deal but with a ~$800 phone included as well (on 24 months instead of 12 month term).

Compared to this $49/month JB BYO deal, you are paying an extra $240 over the 24 months and giving up $200 JB gift card & 5GB of data; however you are getting a $600-$900ish phone included instead.

If you value the Galaxy S8 at $800 (I think the cheapest deal we saw was $799 for Bing Lee) then you are paying $640 over 24 months for the 15GB contract = $26.66/month which seems like a great deal on the Telstra network and also no upfront cost required. That's probably the best value there since the Pixel XL and iPhone 6s are older models but they are options for Apple users or someone not wanting to go down the Samsung path.

  • Signed up, recontracting from the ages old F&F plan from 2014 (I already recontracted in 2016, but the ETC is waived if recontracting).

    Used online chat to help, and they have advised they will add the 5GB/mo bonus.

  • I ordered my new Galaxy s8 this time last night, and received shipping info today for delivery tomorrow. And I just got off of like chat where they very simply added 5gb just by asking. She did say the 5gb eligibility was for multiple devices/accounts, but then advised she was applying it to my account anyway for my loyalty

    I ported from boost to Vodafone this morning, went to jb hifi in the afternoon and signed up for the $49 plan and received my $200 giftcard.
    Tonight I signed up for friends and family plan online through cashrewards and was offered the bonus 5gb straight away by chat.
    Hopefully everything goes to plan and I receive the $105 cashback and new galaxy s8. I tried for the $10 discount but no luck.

  • Made my order on the 18th. Just spoke to a rep on chat and they gave me a Startrack number and said that the bonus 5gb would be added automatically to my plan.

      Confirmed on chat before completing my order, no fees as I was on a sim only plan.

          He then said I won't need to pay any ETC for upgrading to the F&F plan.

    To help others out, this is the process I took:
    I signed up for the JB deal with $200 gift card 4 days ago.
    Today I went through cashrewards to shop at Telstra, pasted the link: https://www.telstra.com.au/latest-offers/employee-family-fri… (as advised in previous comments).
    I waited for the 'chat to purchase' notification to appear in bottom right of screen before going any further.
    I then started chat and advised the agent "I'm interested in signing up for the offer but was wondering if early termination charge would apply since I already have a sim only BYO plan - also there was a notification for an extra 5gb data but it vanished"
    The agent confirmed no ETC and that they'd apply the 5gb once I had the order number.
    I placed the order, gave the #, and they applied it.
    3 minutes later I got an email from cashrewards confirming the sale has been tracked.

      Best post ever. To add, the agent made me fill in a form on a new link.. just need to be careful that the browser still has CR activated. If you use Chrome and the CR widget it will tell you.

          Thanks turned out I had a order "pending" when it should have been cancelled holding up my actual order. Phone support were useless

      I did the chat prior to the sign up. The chat guy said "Sign up and give your order number", then he did the rest. I used the Chrome app for Cash Rewards

    Hey guys just wanted to share my experience. I went to TELSTRA store in Sydney CBD today and I told them I wanted to sign up for a $59 mobile plan for family and friends. Everything was very smooth. They didn't even ask the employee id and etc. Got my new phone already! Thank you OzBargain!! you guys are the best :)

    after think harder on the deal.

    personally i dont value the S8 as a $800 phone. i would go to oneplus 5T or huawei mate 10.

    and i am paying $25 per month with vodafone. for unlimited local and international calls and texts.
    14G of data shared with my wife ($45 plan).

    so to me, it is like. paying $800 dollor to buy a phone i dont really into it and lose international calls.
    in terms of 20g data which i got from this deal, i am not even able to consume that much yet.

    • Depending on the amount of effort you want to go to, this Telstra plan could theoretically workout to be around net $15 a month. Total cost is $1416. Take into account Pricepal cashback of $150, $200 JB HiFi gift card, ~$700 if you sell brand new Galaxy S8 = $366/24 which is $15.25 a month.

      I’m personally happy with Galaxy S8, 20GB data for $52.75 a month after Pricepal cashback.

          Took right on 24 hours. Just clicked through and then pasted the URL for this deal. Pricepal takes forever! But it’s an extra $45 back.

    • The device payout amount on the s8 is $1176. So definitely not worth it if you think you may not fulfil the contract. Plus the termination charge of $708.

  • Hey guys i've recently become a Telstra prepaid customer 3 months ago. I was an Optus customer for about 10 years. Originally signed up with Telstra for a byo plan $49 for 14gb but it was misleading. It was only 12gb.. etc anyway I'm pretty keen on this deal everyone's talking about JB $200 voucher 20gb $49 a month new customer. Then swing onto the family and friends $59 s8 15 or 20gb 2 year contract. However I went into JBhifi today and they said if I was to port over to another company then back to Telstra I'll lose my current number?? Because I'm not considered a new customer ?? Has anyone kept there original number porting across.. cheers

      You will keep your number. JB HI FI seem to have in their terms that the $200 gift card is only valid for those porting in have been with the other phone company for at least 30 days - although many seem to be getting the deal regardless.

    Confirming that I successfully got the extra 5gb as well as cashback ($150 via my work rewards portal) using the chat window to request the extra 5gb.

    I was an existing post-paid BYO customer (as anyone coming via JB Hifi would be)

    The way the chat bonus works is you wait for the popup, ask for the extra 5gb, then just leave it open while you complete the order, and the agent waits, and afterwards you finish the conversation with the order number you just received while the agent was waiting. So cashback tracking will work because you never leave the sales flow.

    • How long had you been on the BYO plan before signing up to this deal? Been thinking about porting over from Optus to the JB deal then this one.. Just a bit worried I’ll get stung with some sort of fee along the way..

        About 12 hrs since I changed BYO deals, and was about 2 months into a 12 month before that. As long as the new contract is a higher value they're happy to oblige and in fact the order form confirms it under the covers for you without human intervention required

  • Anyone having issues with CR? I click activate on the addon and then it closes my browser.
    I click through from the CR webpage, paste the family and friends offer into the address bar and it still asks me to activate CR.
    EDIT: 10 mins later i've recieved the tracking email.

  • My plan change appears to have just went thought, have 0GB of 20.20GB used (5 days left of billing month so I can go nuts setting up my S8).

    I have 1 x $5 data share and a $5 companion plan, both still active and sharing data.

    I just got 2 SMS's to say i've used 100% of my 200Mb quota on the shared services, followed by a PDF from Telstra confirming my first bill amount.

    Then I got another SMS confirming my 20.20GB quota.

    They are just charging me my handset payment for my iPhone 7+ and waving the plan ETC charge exactly as agreed on live chat.

    Unbelievable how simple Telstra was on this compared to what people went though on the recent Optus BYO deals.

    • I had issues on my work network but was fine on my home chrome. Make sure you are in the order form (i.e. you've already clicked the phone u want and have started the application). Probably took about 10 min

      • You dont need to wait for the popup, just go into live chat and tell them about the 5gb offer.

        • I just tried the live chat and they said they could only do the extra 5GB if the order was put through via live chat, which I think might mean I don't get the tracking for pricepal. Can anyone confirm?

      I’m going to say reliability. Pricepal took 24 hours to get the email, cash rewards takes less than 30 minutes and it keeps track of your clicks in your account.

  • my wife tried to sign up to upgrade from her iphone se (telstra plan) and said that she'd have to pay out the extra ~$255 or so to pay it off. did anyone get around this sorta thing by calling or is that basically it (ie just pay it)?

    • I think if you are still paying off a phone then yes, you will have to pay it out. You may be able to haggle a bit if the value/monthly cost of the new deal exceeds the current deal though, so cant hurt to have a few goes with live chat

  • I just check the Telstra 24x7 app and the there is a link to 'xmas family offer' under services-usage.
    I don't know is if it was there before I changed to this plan though.

    Mine initially loads the same page as linked above but then it re-directs to the staff plan which is 25% off at $44.25.

    When I click the link in this deal now, it loads to the staff plan at $44.25

        • It is the same offer but I think the extra 25% off is for actual staff. I am seeing $44.25 also and I believe it might be because there's a flag on my account saying that I am/was staff. Just reading that offer page though, to get the 25% discount you need to request it separately through their staff My Rewards portal. So if you're not actual staff, then you won't be able to get the discount anyway.

  • Got my S8 yesterday, jumped onto chat and they added the 5GB just before I activated the service porting from Optus. Now it's active, it still says I have 15GB though. Does it take a few days for it to update or do I need to chat again?

    Bloke asked me which Pixel XL I wanted, so I said 128gb Black.

    He informs me I'll have to pick it up instore, but confirmed 3 times it is definitely 128gb. I'll see how I go today. :)

          Ported out my telstra to Optus (work phone) last year.

          I just tried the online chat 3 times, no one is willing to give me the $10 loyalty discount.

          Aniket: If you porting your number you will only get 5GB bonus data.
          Aniket: As you are purchasing a family and friends plan so you will not get discount.
          Aniket: You just have to pay $59 per month and you will get 15Gb data unlimited national talk and text and extra 5GB bonus data total 20Gb per month.
          Aniket: You will get this christmas offer only online.

          Yeah, goodluck getting a $10 off discount. Not saying the other guy didn't get it, but it wouldn't be common practice like the extra 5gb. In fact, some people even had problem getting the extra 5GB, although that seemed easy enough for me.

          Just got a call from Telstra, turns out the $10 off isn't possible on this plan, the operator put me on the wrong plan.

          After much objection, they split the difference and applied $100 credit to the whole account.

          Oh well.
