Buyer's Remorse: New Promo Is Announced Days after Contract Signing (Hyundai i30)

Signed a contract on a new Hyundai i30 last Saturday. Was pretty happy with the purchase price (got almost 10% discount off Drive Away Price), until I saw 2 days later that Hyundai's launched a new promotion: Free 5 years / 75k servicing — that's worth almost $1.4k in the case of the i30.

Tried calling the dealership in the hope of renegotiating but the staff who handled my account was on leave (supposedly). Was routed to another staff but he didn't pick up. Then the operator asked for my number so the guy can call me back. Didn't get any. Hope this isn't a sign of things to come in as far as after sales service is concerned.

Anyway, just wondering if anybody's been in my shoe. Would love to hear what you did, and what the outcome was.

Also, I read the contract i signed and noticed that there's a cooling off period of 3 days. Not sure if that's something I can consider — I've put in a deposit of $1k, and the car's subject to finance approval (haven't heard yet what the outcome is).

Lastly, as mentioned, this car's on financing plan. Before I signed on the dotted line, I was told of how much the weekly payment would be. Just wondering if it's possible that — assuming the loan is approved — the quoted amount ends up higher? In such a case, can I say that I have the option of turning it down? Sorry. Just have to ask as this is the first time I'm getting something via financing.

Thanks in advance.

If it has cooling off period then cancel it, if it was less than three days ago. If not, then that’s life, no big deal

Thanks. It does have a cooling off period. It seems the following is applicable to me since I signed the contract at the dealership:

$400 or 2% of the purchase price (whichever is higher) where this is not an off-trade premises sale

The 2% is about 1/3 of the cost of the 5 years free servicing. So it seems it's cheaper to cancel than contract, assuming they don't agree on extending/applying the promo to my purchase.

23k is a lot to pay for transportation.

    https://www.consumer.vic.gov.au/cars/buying-a-new-car/coolin…

"You have three business days (excluding weekends and public holidays) after you sign a contract to change your mind. This is your cooling-off period. However, if you choose to accept delivery of the vehicle during this three-day period, you will automatically lose your right to cool off."

You better get cracking. Cop the $600 cooling off fee.. But on Wednesday, you should ask the dealer if they can get you further assistance before you send an email. Do the cancellation by email, fax and registered post to be sure.

Also, yes, if the finance isnt suitable then you can cancel without deposit loss I would think, but am not 100% on this.

    • Thanks. That's what I was thinking too. I got the i30 for $23k so 2% of that is $460. Hopefully they'll agree to extend the promo to me, else I'll have to bid that $460 goodbye.

You assume you'll get the same deal elsewhere. You might not ;)

        • I don't know what your problem is but others have gotten the i30 at roughly 10% discount in as early as June/July. So yes, I'm pretty certain I'll be able to get it at that price elsewhere.

        • -1

@JaxSantiago: No problem at all. Yes those people got 10% off and at the time didn't get free servicing etc.

I'm not saying you can't get 10% off, I'm saying you assume you can get 10% off still and the free servicing offer. This is yet to be determined until a contract is signed.

Hey this is Ozbargain. 1 can assume he can get the best deal whenever possible.

You can, but you might not too. Its the risk you take and from what you say, it appears a lot of risk/effort for a $1k saving.

And that's precisely why I posted here. Always good to hear how others fared, or hear their thoughts.

    • God I love WA contacts - no cooling off periods. Can prepare a car the same day for delivery, then deliver it!

  • How would you feel if the price went up, and the dealership put their hand out? Same same really

Sales like these however, you're normally aware of it before the day. Monthly price cycles we don't know until the 1st of the month, but 3 day sales or 6 day sales are known a few days out, and will normally be told to the customer as a final negotiation technique, and you'd write the contract on paper (not computer) just purely for the benefit of the customer, and customer service.

Just looked up the sale promo and strangely there's nothing in the terms about 'vehicle must be purchased between x and y' for the free servicing.
Call the salesman tomorrow, and if not call the new car manager. Be calm, polite and nice. Don't threaten to pull out just to get your way, they won't bend over backwards to give you something if you act like a dick!

    • Wouldn’t be the first time a dealer has asked for extra $$ “because our price has gone up” etc. there’s even a provision in the QLD standard dealer contracts that gives them the opportunity to (and the buyer the opportunity to withdraw because of it)

      • There is in WA too, but only if the RRP goes up. That only happens on orders from the factory etc.

    • Was aware of a promo for cars purchased between 23 and 26 Nov before I dropped by the dealership. But that was for South Australia and only for 3 years / 45k servicing. Showed it to the staff and was told that there is no such promotion for VIC (staff showed the ad to the Manager as well — same reply. Not aware of such promo).

The promotional video I saw in Hyundai's webby states IIRC, for cars purchased between 22 and 25 Nov, and delivered on or before 30 Nov.

  • get crystal ball next time first before committing.

    • Didnt find any in Ozb.

      • not yet they are very rare keep looking.

Firstly, attempt to get your dealership to extend the promotion to your purchase. If you don't ask, you don't get.

If that fails, on one hand, you can exercise your cooling off rights (assuming they're still available), lose $460 and start the car purchase negotiation all over again.

On the other hand you can just cop the fact you haven't got as a good a deal as the next person (as would be the case if this promo came down the line a couple of weeks later) and get on with your life.

Sounds like this is more a case of buyer's remorse in general terms, not just around potentially missing out on this promotion.

You can think of it anyway you want to.:) The remorse/regret came only after seeing the promotion. In another post, I said I was aware that there's a 3 year/45k free servicing promotion in South Australia. I guess I should've taken that as a hint that a nationwide promo might be forthcoming.

    Nice

    Free 5 years / 75k servicing — that's worth almost $1.4k in the case of the i30.

You do realise that you might not get the 10% discount on this deal. You can't always have both!

Also, I read the contract i signed and noticed that there's a cooling off period of 3 days.

If I was a salesman and someone did this to me, you won't be getting your 10% discount on the next contract!

    • You do realise that you might not get the 10% discount on this deal. You can't always have both!

Keyword is MIGHT. I do know that others have gotten their i30s at $23k. So in as far as I'm concerned, there really isn't something "special" with the 10% discount.

Also, over in WP, somebody shared that he signed for an i30 last Sat and was given the 5 years / 75k free servicing promo.

If I was a salesman and someone did this to me, you won't be getting your 10% discount on the next contract!

You won't have my business — and referrals — then. But good thing you aren't a salesman ;)

      • Also, over in WP, somebody shared that he signed for an i30 last Sat and was given the 5 years / 75k free servicing promo.

Did they also get 10% off? As you seem to be confusing the two.

Not saying the 10% off is 'special', I'm saying these deals move around depending on whats on offer.

This month might allow up to 10% off, next month, it might be 5 years / 75k free servicing promo, but don't discount below 5%. Nothing is 'free' that $1.4k worth the servicing has to come from somewhere.

You won't have my business — and referrals — then. But good thing you aren't a salesman ;)

haha yes i30 shoppers bring lots of new business in ;)

Anyhow, cancel your order and see what they say. Do report back!

        • Did they also get 10% off? As you seem to be confusing the two

Not really. But just so you know, as early as June (or was it July?) somebody's already got it at $23k.

haha yes i30 shoppers bring lots of new business in ;)

Nah. My reply's about you being a salesman. Nothing to do with i30.

        • @JaxSantiago:

          Not really.

So not comparing an equal sale then….

Nah. My reply's about you being a salesman. Nothing to do with i30.

and my point was you an i30 customer, isn't really going to be bringing in many referrals are you.

Anyhow, cancel your order and let us know how you go!

        • @JimmyF:

With "Not really", i mean I am NOT confusing between the 2. I'm fairly hopeful — or confident if you might — that the i30 can be had for $23k with free 5 years servicing.

and my point was you an i30 customer, isn't really going to be bringing in many referrals are you.

Fair enough. That's your POV. :)

Anyhow, cancel your order and let us know how you go!

          Don't hold your breath.

When I purchased my first car, same issue. One full day later, a new promo for two years free servicing. I just mentioned it and got it.

NO, koreans have not made giant leaps at all, this is fully engineered in Europe as you quoted above, nothing korean about it, they just picked up the tab, and then bolted on the bonnet a melted H/Honda logo!

Then The-Badge brand/make, these days The-Badge is even more important than what you are actually buying, NO WAY would i buy this in front of legent GTi

Most likely fail after all the "newness" has worn off, i present as evidence the kia ceed sport model whatever it was called, and you guys built a shrine to it, now DOA and long forgotten

koreans should stick to building $15k pov pack grocery runabouts, for the rest of us thats what they will always be,

    • +1

      Was that English?

      • It sounds like they're trying to say that their legendary gti is superior to some melted cheese called the-badge. Their gti being a legend also means that it's dead.

        Does that sound right?

        • I don't really wanna re-read it to decipher it tbh

    • legent GTi

      Veedub. Lol.

      • VW= Virtually Worthless

  • Communication is the key. Rather than talking to Oz Barainers, you should be at the Dealership talking to the sales manager, or the D.P. The new promotion you mentioned may be partly subsidised by the dealership out of the margin, so you may not be able to double dip as others have mentioned. The dealership dont want to lose you business, just get in there and discuss it . There will be a solution that works for you both.

    • Agree 100%. But I wanted to be ready (or to anticipate) before talking to them.

  • +7

Thought I should give an update to this thread.

I managed to talk to the sales staff who handled my account, and asked for the 5 years free servicing promotion to be extended to my purchase. The request was turned down straight away.

On the last day of the cooling off period I notified them of my decision to cancel the contract. The manager contacted me within the hour and told me that he was made aware of the 5 years free servicing request that was made the day before and that accordingly they checked with Hyundai and was told that the said promotion can be extended to my purchase.

Signed up with them in the end.

      Good outcome for you then!

Oh, that's really great news. Congratulations on the deal. A+
