Price drop on this one. It has been $749 for a while, above the GST barrier. It has now dropped by a reasonable amount, possibly due to Black Friday.

Worth looking at if you want something portable, as it is only 1.2kg, and has a quad-core 8th gen i5 CPU.

Do not use Amazon's exchange rate, because it is shocking at the moment. Pay in USD using a card that does not charge you foreign transaction fees.

I realise it has been posted before, but it was more expensive and has not been below the GST barrier for weeks.

Great deal. Still don't know why they use DC IN instead of type c for charging/data etc.

    • +1

Not sure. Perhaps they are worried about an increase in warranty claims if they support charging with type-C, due to people using dodgy chargers or cables. But that's just a guess.

  • basically the xiaomi laptop but no dedicated graphics?

This one is portable. 2kg and 15.6" vs. 1.2kg and 13.3".
      Not comparable.

      • +1

um the 13 inch laptop im using right now is 1.3 kg IIRC

        • Do you have a link to the Xiaomi laptop your using - I take it you're happy with it?

Xiaomi phones are great and keen to try one of their laptops too, but the 2nd gen Zenbook I bought a maybe 5 years ago has been the most solid piece of tech I've ever owned (I understand things have apparently gone a little down hill since then)

        • @nith265: you're SOL if something goes wrong with it. had some minor issues with waking after sleep, but i suspect that they're windows issues rather than laptop issues. much happier with this laptop than my clevo.

        • @tomkun01:
Thanks - nvidia card makes it pretty amazing for the price I guess.

SOL for the ASUS or the Xiaomi? (both probably!)

        • @nith265: moreso the xiaomi. amazon can be excellent for returns

  • Great laptop but the thermals and fan speed were issues

  • Planning to purchase it. Is this the best yet in this price range?

    • +1

Depends what you are after, i.e. speed, portability, etc. I also posted some other ones recently.

Keep in mind that this is from Amazon us and warranty will go through them

      • +1

Actually this ASUS model has got ASUS' own international warranty, according to Amazon's listing under "Warranty & Support", pdf.

There had been comments from other forum members that ASUS AU does honour and accept servicing of eligible international laptops under warranty.

  • Definitely tempting. Wonder if black friday brings any better deals in the sub $1000 range.

  • Definitely thinking hard about this one. Probably a stupid question but how do you guys go about charging these overseas laptops? do you buy a completely new power chord for the laptop or just an au adapter to plug in

    • Depends if the changer has a power chord at all. It may just be like a power supply which plugs right in. In that case a travel adapter is needed. Bending pins can work but isn't safe and can cause damage.
