Deliveries to PO Box Not an Option for Gadgets?

I've noticed that some sellers advise that they won't deliver to PO Boxes. This doesn't suit me.

Can you suggest how I can get around that, especially when I'm away from home for extended periods and I want things delivered to my post box?

Thanks

  • Can you get it delivered to a neighbour/friend/relative?

It is possibly not the sellers but Australia Post's fault for not accepting deliveries from 3rd party couriers. Depending on your relationship with the Post Master (is it a small post office, or an Australia Post owned- we don't care about you outlet?) you may be able to simply have items delivered to the street address of the post office in your name. I used to do this, but had to stop when I moved my PO box and my new post office refused to do this for me.

It's actually an interesting question from a monopoly abuse / restriction of free trade perspective, but I am sure it is in the T's and C's of the PO box contract - "you can only have mail sent by Australia Post to your PO BOX (plus any junk mail we choose to put in there), we will not hold mail from other carriers" or something similar.

That's true - and I think, if AusPost wasn't government owned, the ACCC would already be on this like white on rice. It's effectively using their monopoly position (Australia Posts being the main/only postal service in Australia) to maintain their monopoly position (decreasing the convenience/value of competing delivery (not postal) services), which is the definition of anti-competitive practices.

      • their monopoly position

Ap's monopoly is limited to a specific service. The rest is open to competition.

Set up Parcel Colllect to the same Post office you have your PO BOX at - https://auspost.com.au/receiving/alternative-delivery-addres… .. then use the parcel collect address to deliver to.

    It's a free service.

    • Aha, that will work for me.
      Thanks bdl.

        You're welcome :)

      • Some couriers won't deliver to parcel lockers either, eg FastWay.

Only Australia Post can deliver to PO BOX or Parcel Lockers.

SO while this doesn't suit you, it also doesn't suit them to ship via auspost. Buy elsewhere.

    • So can StarTrack. Although that is technically Australia Post …

Correct…. They even has the auspost logo slapped on the side ;)

  • Thanks for your responses everyone.
I needed to find a workaround, and did, quickly.
