CCTV for Home

I need a relatively cheap solution for home security , under $300 for maybe 4 cameras , easy cordless design so it can be DIY
I know this one has 8 cameras but it’s cheap (probably nasty too lol)

I don’t know what I should be looking for as a minimum ?

  • So you want cheap and nasty? why don't you buy one install it and let us know ;)

cordless ? as in battery operated? or cordless as in WiFi?

But wireless battery operated Netgear Arlo $300+
Or POE Hikvision for wired , $100 per cam, then you need POE switch and DVR to record.

  • xiaofang + mi powerbank

    cheap & cheerful

    • i was told that the power bank doesnt last long enough?

      • -2

i was told that it last for ages (from whirlpool)

Safe to assume it'll last mor than a month on 20000mah mi powerbank if wifi is off and only records to sd.

        • i was told that it last for ages (from whirlpool)

it depends on how much current the device use.

          google gearbest xiaofang

Power Specification of Power Supply: DC 5V 1A
          Working Voltage: DC 5V

a 20000mah power bank may last ~13.5 hours if left on continuous recording. motion detection may extend its battery life to two days.

        • @whooah1979:

so you measure consumption based on power supply rating ?

even usb port from laptop able to power the xiaofang fully operational

        • @phunkydude:

we don't have a xiaofang to test, so we worked with variables taken from other sources.
          https://slickdeals.net/f/10183916-xiaomi-xiaofang-1080p-wifi…

I use this with IP Cam Viewer Pro on iOS at home.
The default power source is a 5VDC, 1000mA (or 1 ampere) unit. It will NOT function from a USB port, which can supply only 500mA maximum.

so anything between 501ma to 900ma.

        • @whooah1979:

Hi @HcNguyen111: , can you confirm yours working on laptop usb as mentioned before ?

usb 2.0 or usb 3.0 hp?

          Some numbers from mine…

          Xiaofang on 1A supply, idle : 0.39A
          Updating firmware : 0.32A
Turning night vision etc. on/off makes minor difference, about 0.02A.

In real use on a 3500mAh power bank with about 50% charge, it lasted about 3 hours.

This doesn't narrow it down much.
Best guess would be that it draws a little over 500mA with motion detection and night vision on, actively recording to SD.

          thanks for that.

we got a similar swann system. the image quality is reasonable. everyone that enters the property is easily recognised. the feral cats that keep roaming our garden at night. the neighbours trees with their branches and leaves that keeps setting of the motion recording. all in all a bang for buck system.
