Help Requested Finding a Good Telstra-Network SIM Plan!

Hey all,

A friend has recently moved to Kalgoorlie (regional town in WA), and is struggling with her current Virgin Mobile service, which obviously uses the Optus network. Her phone contract is due to expire in a few months time, but she's pretty keen to upgrade to Telstra or one of their MVNO's which uses their network. Just a couple of quick questions;

1) If she chooses a SIM plan with an MVNO such as Aldi Mobile, will she receive the same network coverage out in Kalgoorlie as she would if she went with Telstra directly? Or if not, would it likely be adequate, given that it's still using the Telstra network?

2) Is anyone aware of the current best value SIM only plans for operators running on the Telstra network?

Thanks so much for any answers you guys might be able to provide, I'm really not very knowledgeable about any of this sort of stuff. Really appreciated.

    Hi

    1. Telstra MVNOs do not get full access to the network. I would suggest checking the MVNOs you are interested in and reviewing the coverage map to see if you are adequately covered.

    2. You can get 15-20GB for $49 and a $200 JB Hi Fi voucher at a JB store. This will be with Telstra on the full network. That's the best value you can get. Comes with subscription to AFL/NRL and also Apple music 6 month sub.

    If this is too expensive, check Aldi as they will probably be your next bet, but be sure to check the coverage map

      boost gets Telstra retail coverage

      • Yep - by full access I should have been clearer and said that speed is restricted to 4G and not 4GX.

  • boost mobile

    Boost or Telstra are the only 2 options with access to the full Telstra Network and even that is stretching the truth a little I believe as I'm pretty sure that Telstra solely has coverage across some mining locations.

    Looking at the aldi map for Kalgoorlie you seem to not get all the coverage of Telstra, but do at least get a reasonable amount. Better to have a 700Mhz band 28 capable phone.

    Not sure either are going to be massively better than Optus, judging by the coverage maps.

    Probably best to get a few prepay SIMs and see which work where you want to be.
