PSA: Check your bank account if you used the Origin Energy 6 months Amaysim free offer, I got charged $24.90 on 13th Dec!

So I got charged $24.90 despite turning off auto recharge/topup.

Amaysim responded to my email pretty quickly and refunded, so kudos to them. I just want to put this out there as a PSA.

Check your account! $24.90 is ~ 22.5 pcs of KFC!!!

Not sure if this is a strange case or whatever…

Hi [StrayfireX],

Thank you for your email.

i understand that you no longer have the sim card and that you no longer require the service for the mobile [redacted].
I can arrange to provide the refund for the unauthorized renewal of the plan. I can see that you requested for the auto renewal to be turned off in July 2017, but due to the renewal of the plan in August the auto renewal have been turned back on. I checked the account and I can see that the last usage showing on this mobile is in September.
The mobile plan is a cross sell promotion for 6 months free renewal and the promotion ended on 13-12-2017 which is why the automatic renewal of $24.90 was taken from your card.

I have arranged the refund of $24.90 back on your account and this will reflect in 3-5 business days.

The auto renewal have been turned off and the payment method have been deactivated.

If this does not resolve your query, please feel free to reply to this email.

Regards,

Crissy || Resolutions Officer

It's your own fault. You suppose to turn off auto-renew.

Read the email. It turned it off. Amaysim turned it back on for me. IDK why.

The 6 months free renewal won't work if you turn off auto-renew in July. You suppose to turn it off on the very last month.
I almost forgot to do so https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/5351065/redir

        IDK why.

It's because they wanted to steal your money.

        • Hence the PSA.

I consider myself pretty savvy but yeah those terms and conditions are pretty annoying.

  • You should use prepaid master card to activate your services

I wrangled with them today over this very issue (being billed $24.90).
Btw, they also have a great $10pm deal with 1gb data & all you can eat calls.
I also had turned auto-renew off…when I looked, it was back on, and I'd been charged.

My issue was that they didn't bother to keep me updated that there would be a change in my account, and that was bad customer service for a new customer. Amaysim Guy thought I would have been sent a text or an email and he went looking for it (they hadn't, so he played it down, thinking I'd forget about it). He went on and on and ON about the terms and conditions in the Groupon fine-print (even tho he said I'd be using the free stuff until 09Jan18 (which is the date that I had in my calender as theexpiry date.) I told him that I thought it didn't make sense, that:
..the date changed to Nov17 when they billed me (even tho I could use the account until 9Jan).
.. They hadn't given me any courtesy notice that they would bill me. I found out only when I checked my balance (not that I thought I needed to, as I've only ever used the SIM for calls)

I told Amaysim Guy that I'd heard him say the same thing to me several times, but that he didn't seem to understand what my problem was. I asked him if I could speak to a supervisor, not to complain about him, but about why Amaysim seemed to want to keep it'secret' that they would start billing me, and on a date that didn't make sense to me.
He talked to his supervisor himself….
They've taken the $24.90 off my account. I get to use it until 9Jan18 (which is the date I'd calculated as 6 mths from my activation date. I also asked him to ensure that the 're-new: function stayed off for my account. He agreed.
It took 45 minutes. I got what I thought was fair, and was my understanding of the deal. It marginally restored my faith in Telcos, but not much.

    Not off topic…
It seems like Telcos have a free-for-all/ make-up-the-rules-as-you-go-along/hold the customer to the fine print scenario, currently.
What's going on!? …or am I 'past it' and am now officially an old fogie who can't keep up with the fine print on every crappy little deal….(not that I'm ungrateful…I love these crappy little deals! 😊)
I have found that I need to constantly check Telcos and what they're doing once they've got my credit/PayPal details.

Did I hear right the other day that the Telco industry may be going to be regulated in Au?
Does this mean that they'll have a standard that they need to reach?

    • I wrote my email straight to complaints which made this much easier.

But yeah they really shouldn't make it this hard to do things.

  • Thanks for the heads up.

  • In future pay with PayPal and remove Amaysim from the list of people who are allowed to charge your account when you don't want them to anymore. Gives control back in your hands.

^ and use AMEX as your primary payment method. I get an SMS for every transaction made > $1.

This is why I changed the payment type to Bpay. Instead of being charged, I got an email saying

"Something went wrong and we were unable to process your recent transaction.

We ask you please try again or you use our LiveChat online to chat with us."
