  • Good price… I paid $1079 for the duo last Xmas via TGG :o

  • Great machine. Bought for Father in-law last bing-lee sale. But bought from Harvey Norman for $799 split payment with 2 amex deals so $599 all up.

Then bought smart grinder pro price matched at HN for $199 - was told 'cost price' is $205 for HN so i was getting a very good deal…

  • Just saw someone loading 10 or so of these into their car lol

  • My BES920 died (failed to heat up) exactly one month past the end of the 2 year warranty.

But after I contacted Breville they have given me a work order number to at least cover the assessment / quote for repairs and maybe the full repair cost.

Great machine, but does seem to be prone to various issues according to various online forums.

    • Ive had mine for 5 years, apart from some leaky seals, still going strong…YMMV

you should definitely be getting it repaired for free under the Australian Consumer Law regardless of what they say about warranty at that time frame from purchase.

There is no such thing as "X year warranty" in Australia anymore.

Warranty is how long you expect it should last (based on price point/quality).

      • +5

There is a difference between express and statutory warranties. So yes, there is 'such thing'.

        • You are right.

        • Not sure why I was down-voted.

Whether the warranty is based on the advertised manufacturer warranty, retail shop warranty or the statutory consumer law warranty it is irrelevant to the consumer.

If it is a major fault the customer has their choice of refund, replacement or repair - and I do not care which warranty it falls under because the outcome to me as a customer is the same.

So I stand by the statement of no such thing as "X year warranty", because if my TV advertised as "1 year warranty" breaks, my actions and the outcome will be the same, regardless of if it's 6 months in, or 4 years in.

A retailer giving a defined period of time is irreverent and an attempt at avoiding their obligations to fulfil warranties by tricking people (such as the poster above) into thinking the warranty period has passed which saves them money.

@lysp: of course it's not 'irrelevant to the consumer'; the means of enforcement are completely different. In one case, you wander down to the store and they switch it over with no questions asked because it falls within the express terms provided.

In the other, you potentially have to enforce your claim in SCT and aren't even assured that the ruling will be in your favor since there is subjectivity involved.

You are being downvoted because you are wrong. 'X year warranties' demonstrably exist in Australia. Move on.

I have had mine for 3 plus years, At this price I think it would be hard to beat. Personally I wish I had gone with something more "commercial". But from memory I paid High 9's low 1000's so you start to get into a different market at that price. It is not very forgiving on the grind as it lacks the grunt, too fine and you get a mere trickle. Can take a few tweaks of the grind to get it just right. Bit of a pain if you are getting fresh beans from different sources or roasts. That's getting picky tho…. Spend the pennies you save on a Mini Mazzer or similar for the next upgrade….. Smart grinder is a bit meh, or maybe that's the user :)

All that being said makes a good brew and saves you $4/$5 $6 !!!! At the local, times 2 or three on the weekend doesn't take long to get your money back.

    • I agree about it being picky on grind size. I try to stick to the same source of beans for several bags at least to make it less annoying.

    • $6? What are you drinking???

Just got mine up and running from the Good Friday sales. In fact just extracted a coffee better than 80% of cafe's I've been :) This pricepoint is cheapest ever if you can pick up, and I'd rather buy from GG than Bing lee since GG is more localised. Great post Looter819, this is a no brainer if you don't already have it.

  • I purchased the BES920 and Smart Grinder Pro packaged set from Harvey Norman at Osborne Park, WA on the weekend. It was on sale for $899 as a complete package BUT only in the Cranberry colour. The model number is BEP920CRN. I went there to buy the the BES920 in stainless but realised that for $100 more I could get the smart grinder was well (which was ticketed at $221 on the shelf). After applying my 2 x AMEX offers by splitting the payments I ended up being $699 out of pocket. In addition the BEP920 currently has an offer by redemption for a 3 month supply of coffee beans with a claimed value of $144. The beans are dispatched in 3 separate deliveries over the 3 months. Checked on line and found the beans are $12 for a 250g bag directly from the supplier so the $144 value seems to check out. I was going to post this deal yesterday but didn't know if it was store specific.

  • I am getting "This code can't be applied to your order." when trying to get the BES870 any idea why? Thanks

    • +1

Works for me. Are you sure you’be added the BES870 from TGG? Other non-eligible items in your cart? In any case, I would extend yourself to the BES920 for not much more: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2167422

      • Thank you Fault. I was trying to buy it from TGG, I tried a couple of computers, different browsers, etc and still same message. Unfortunately I don't have enough space in the kitchen for the BES920 (80mm wider), so I thought the BES870 would be a good 2nd best, if I could only apply the code…

      • Just so anyone else in my case know how to fix this. I tried doing exactly the same with my wife's ebay account and it worked. I have no idea what ebay has against me…

  • Have been using this machine along with the Smart Grinder Pro at home for the last year and recommend it highly. I can make just as nice a latte at home as I can get at most area cafes (and I only go to the good ones). Similarly, the high end commercial setup I have access to at work doesn't make a better coffee, it's just faster.

  • I purchased one of these in Aug 2015, and it is still making great coffees every morning.
Lately though, it has developed many new sounds, some steam hissing sound inside when its up to temperature, and a louder buzz when the preinfuse is running.
Just hoping I wont get electrocuted by it.
Any idea what the service cost on these is like?
They are cheaper to buy- maybe Ill just grab another one, and consider the repair a project for later on.
    Cheers.
