So only relevant to TPG users on NBN 25Mbs plans (although maybe other ISPs have done the same?). Given they are a popular ISP and this is most popular NBN speed that should be a lot of us.

TPG has scrapped this tier and the 50Mbps tier is the same price. However upgrade is not automatic, so you need to login to your account and change to the new equivalent.

    For those wondering, i made this switch from 25 to 50 last week via online account management. Tooka few hours to have it implemented by tpg.

    Restarted the modem after tpg did their thing and the download speed is now doubled as intended.

    I did a speed test in the evening and got 40+ download speed. Very satisfied.

      Some thing is not right there. It's just a speed upgrade. You shouldn't lost internet at all.

      Did you try restarting your modem?.

    Iinet changed theirs around Wed/Thurs last week

    I changed mine from 25 to 50, within a few hours after a connection reboot I was getting 48/19

      I changed mine on iiNet the other day from 100 down to 50 because that's all the line is capable of thanks to FTTN. I saved $20 per month in the process.

    Question for those on NBN. I used to be on Optus HFC 100mbps cable but would always get 5mbps and get 300+ ping in online games during every arvo. Is NBN as bad that as that or better? Might have to move to the Gong if its as bad.

      depends on the type of nbn i spose … for lucky buggers like me with fibre to the house i have the 100/40 with tpg and consistently get 95/35 speeds and 1-3ms ping

      Nah, that's a mandate from the ACCC. All the other RSPs are doing it now, Telstra was first.

      Our guidance proposes four labels to show how different services will typically operate during the busy evening period between 7.00pm and 11.00pm.
      If a provider does not use these labels you should ask how its services will operate during the busy period, and which plan best suits your needs.

      Had a friend once sharing his phone line with his neighbour (pair gained) getting 2.5k a sec after that he had to go wireless @ 120 dollars a month for 10 gig.

    I was on the 25 plan, was averaging around 20Mbps, now on the 50 plan and average around 40Mbps, but I did notice it can move right down to 15Mbps at night, where the 25 plan, never changed, always around the 20Mbps mark.

      TPG don't throttle.

      The main reason a VPN could be giving you better speeds is the better routing.

          Kodi checks for updates, a few kb, and that's it. They provide a grand total of zero streaming services.

          If you can't even work out that then you really shouldn't be claiming an ISP is throttling.

      yep and they're also providing the ISP with more CVC for users on 50 and 100mbit plans to there's more incentive for the ISPs to get ppl onto 50 instead of 25 as they receive double the CVC which helps up their CVC average with less spending.

        Most likely you are running on WIFI. I have better ping with a VPN (PIA) than my mates who is down the street, the only reason is using a shit router/combo and using wifi connection.

      They provide a TPLink VR1600V. I had mine since September and it failed just last night.

      Past couple weeks it would disconnect from the internet every couple days and freeze. Had to power cycle it each time.
      Then, last night, it reset itself and only the Power light was ON. Power-cycled a couple times and then it wouldn't turn back on. No lights.

      So yea, a piece of crap. I don't think it handles hot temperatures and so can overheat and die easily. Great for Australian weather!

    How can you upgrade or change plans? I cant, im stuck on 25Mbps and i get low 3 is all i get and its so painful. im using nbn HFC sadly and they said we cant change or upgrade our plan, looks like were stuck im confused how others can do this.

    So everyone complaining about the speed drops or low speeds, are you guys actually on FTTP or FTTN? I have been with TPG since the start of NBN with FTTP connection 100mbps connection and using the TPG supplied modem, I’m getting 85-95 speeds depending on how much apps I have open. Peak or offpeak doesn’t really affect it as it is FTTP and not sharing the line with others. Also running lan connection from NBN box all the way to my pc.

    Btw, I was told from the NBN installer that the speed quality isnt affected by your ISP as everything goes through the NBN company. Just look for the cheapest and best value deal you can get.

    I have a non NBN ADSL2+ account with iinet, unless they've changed that to an NBN account without informing me (I believe that's impossible as there are hardware requirements (?))

    Will this change affect me?

    I used to be very very happy with the speed, but for the last couple of years it deteriorates consistently in peak times - I believe because everyone's watching Netflix and it's clogging up the pipes - is that fundamentally a correct understanding if not technically correct?

      This upgrade affects current NBN users only. There is no choice in speeds for ADSL users — how fast your ADSL connection is largely depends on factors that you cannot control — such as line distance, the condition of the century-old copper lines, network congestion etc.

      The only way you'll get faster speeds is when your current ADSL2 connection is converted to NBN — using either Fiber to the Node, Fiber to the Curb, HFC or Fiber to the Home — so yes, ADSL infrastructure is quite different from NBN infrastructure.

      For you to benefit from this, you'll first need to signup to an NBN plan.

      IInet will tell you if you're able to signup using the address you provide.

        I live in a, I don't know how to describe it, high population suburb within Sydney - not regional at all. Actually i'm pretty close to a major Telstra exchange, less than 2 miles away.

        I checked the iinet page and it said that there is no NBN here.

        Is that normal?

        I think I read that it's compulsory to convert to NBN at a certain stage, I thought within less than a year.

        Should I expect to have to upgrade shortly, and if so is the NBN almost always an upgrade / improved service. And the costing should be roughly the same?

        Sorry if these aren't good questions for you

    I pay for a 100/40 HFC plan and every night starting around 5:30pm it goes down to 15/0. Thats right I get no measurable upload speed. Everything gets connection reset due to lack of response. TPG sucks big hairy ones.

      Have you tried calling them about the problem? You should go collect some data of the speed/ping issues at certain time throughout the day. Somehow magically i called/message them and show them my finding about the high ping (800ms just to ping google dns/TPG website) and low speed during peak hours. He said he would fix the issues in few days, which somehow he did. I have no issues since (been 6 months), but this is before their advertises the evening speeds.

    Wish I could change stuck on 100/40 (free upgrade) with Telstra and am luck to get 15/3 ( down from 85/40 when I first connected) they have massively oversold in my area that I use 4g after 6pm

    1GB (Gigabyte) = 1000 MB (Megabyte). Unused usage quota forfeited each month.

    1Consists of peak (8:30am - 2:30am) and off peak (2:30am - 8:30am) monthly usage quota. Speed will be shaped to 128Kbps/128Kbps for the period in which the monthly usage quota has been exceeded (peak and/or off peak). Downloads and uploads counted.

    2Speed will be shaped to 32Kbps/32Kbps for the billing cycle in which the monthly usage quota has been exceeded. Downloads and uploads are counted.

      The 1GB is a reference to how they measure GB. An actual GB is 1024MB, so that's their disclaimer.

      The peak and offpeak are if you have peak and offpeak quotas. Some plans give say 500gb peak and 500gb off peak. This was mostly on ADSL, I'm not sure if they use it for NBN still. Internode doesn't, which is who I'm with.

      Shaping is what happens if you go over the above quotas. Note, the quotas are measured separately, but once you go over one you've gone over both. The speed listed is what they set your connection speed to once they shape you. That's practically unusable now.

      You're on the lowest tier, so to upgrade to 50/20, you would need to start paying more.

    TBH, I kinda see this coming. I'm with Optus but after I moved to NBN, the speed was horrendous on my 25mbps down plan. It was worse than my old adsl with Internode. Call and complain to them for a month and back then they weren't able to offer no penalty cancellation and they bumped me to 50mbps down plan FOC. Even this plan on peak hours can only give me an average between 30-35mbps down. So yeahh. Talk about getting your moneys' worth.

    pretty stupid really… the new NBNco wholesale pricing was supposed to allow RSPs to provision more CVC per user eliminating some of the congestion problems… Upgrading everyone to the next tier for free pretty much defeats the purpose as it will likely cause more congestion over time.

    I strongly believe the "typical" speeds are for NBN users that recently been connected to NBN in the area.

    Why? Cause I live in Blacktown, Blacktown was one of the first areas to get NBN approx 3-4 years ago. I got a TPG plan for $60 for 100 mbps and 24/7 I would get roughly 95mbps+… always! I had no issues.

    I moved back to my parents house, same area, Blacktown but NBN was installed approx 8 months later at my parents house. They are on Telstra 100mbps and I just ran a speed test and I am getting 91mbps right now. But I did check my speeds at night, and it's always 90 mbps+

    My theory is, the new areas that get NBN, they are cheating with the installation. I believe Blacktown and the other areas that got NBN first got proper installation, therefor getting stable and true speeds close to advertised.

    I heard from an NBN rep that they are using DSL copper lines merged with NBN lines to cut cost so it's not full NBN lines, hence my theory.
