eBay 20% off Sale - The Usual Price Jack Has Started

Surprise surprise… the price jack has begun.

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Gigabyte-AORUS-GeForce-GTX-1080T…

I added this to my watch list on Saturday when it was $1190. Today, it's $1309.

Is this misleading conduct by the seller - inflating prices prior to a sale? I'm sick of this 'sale' bullshit. Is this something Consumer Affairs or the ACCC would be interested in?

Edit: seems Kogan got done for a similar practice so maybe it is something the ACCC would like to know about!

Edit 2: Here's the link to report it to ACCC: https://www.accc.gov.au/contact-us/contact-the-accc/report-a…

Edit 3: Company name: Austin Computers, ABN: 69780893412 - get reportin'!

EDIT 4: ARE YOU KIDDING ME, THEY RAISED THE PRICE AGAIN! IT'S NOW $1367.

Edit 5: As @nickxau pointed out, it's an obscene $1482 now, almost 22% higher than it was on Saturday.

Mod: We have removed the unobtainable deals (due to a price increase after being posted) and merged them below (5 in total), note that many were posted before this thread was made, so they will appear at the top of the comments section below. See original mod comment and discussion here. Please note that other unobtainable deals which were removed due to combining an existing sale (6 in total) which finished before this 20% off sale started weren't merged (not related to a price increase and never possible/available).

Update 19 Jan 11:40am: The eBay deal posting guidelines have been updated to reflect new requirement that deals requiring coupon codes can only be posted on the day the coupon becomes live.

Admins, any chance Videopro can be banned here, as price jacking Culprit before Ebay sale?

    • Could you click buy now when prices are still low then wait till the sale to pay. Because im pretty sure clicking buy now locks you into a purchase but im not sure if it changes the price

  • Merged from Samsung 32'' LED LCD Curved Monitor $252.80 Delivered @ Shopping Express eBay

    Original 20% off deal

Mod 15/1: Price has increased to $295.20 after the discount code. Therefore this deal will be removed at 16/1 10am when the sale starts as unobtainable deal, unless the price reverts (highly unlikely).

    • Everything I've read says curved TV's for anything under ~50" is a lower experience than flat.

      • +1

should not down vote this, need to hear peoples experiences. If possible

        • +2

What down vote? I gave the deal an up vote (because of a bargain), but comment/discussion of the appropriateness of the item for some people could be helpful to others.

@auMouth: Seems like Shanty was indicating that others shouldn't downvote your comment because replies to your thread would be useful. He did upvote your original comment.

        It isn't a TV.

        • -2

Expeirience for seeing content is still the same.

          • +2

@auMouth: Can I see a picture of your lounge room where the couch is pressed up against the TV so your eyes are about 40 to 100 cm from it?

          • @auMouth: Not at all, you sit a lot further from a TV than you do with a monitor, and there are many people sitting at different angles. So curved Tv's aren't that great

Whereas with a monitor, it's pretty much 1 person sitting dead center and a lot closer. Which is the absolute ideal situation for curved displays.

The reason why people say that small curved displays arent very good for lounge room, is because of the narrower and closer the sweet spot is, the smaller the curved tv is

      • Science says it's healthier for you.

The viewing distance using a flat TV is shorter from the center and longer towards the periphery which may make your eye focus more especially during fast pace sequences. The field of view of a Curved UHD TV is more natural and the edge of the TV wraps around the viewer. Curved UHD TVs give you a more uniform viewing distance when your eyes move from the center of the screen to the periphery.

      • I've also heard this but I've also heard that monitors are a different story as you generally sit closer.

    • Is this TV or computer monitor?

    • -1

Worth buying if your wife likes small things.

    • +1

I got this monitor from the previous deal someone else posted. It's excellent for me and I'm extremely happy with it. Gaming and watching Netflix from up close is very immersive and is much more enjoyable than my 15.4" laptop monitor. You can see the pixels when navigating the Windows OS but it's not that bad and doesn't bother me too much. For the price it's worth every cent. Sure you could fork out more for 4k but it would be significantly more.

    • -1

No bargain because you cannot currently buy it at that price, nor can you say it will be that price in 2 days.

      • Buy now, pay on Tuesday.

        • -1

That does not guarantee the price.

          • @stemcell: https://www.ebay.com.au/help/buying/buy-now/buy-now?id=4002

"Purchasing an item with Buy It Now

Buy It Now is the easiest way to make a purchase on eBay. When you see a listing with a Buy It Now option, the price is fixed, so you can buy it straight away."

            I could be wrong

          • +2

@stemcell: @bs0: The coupon only applies at checkout. ‘Buy it now’ and actually paying (ie. checkout) are completely different things. Last eBay sale, I bought an item and paid for it after the coupon code was active.

          • +1

            @stemcell: @epicttiimm:
            Yeh that's what I meant(bad post lol);

Buy it now, lock in today's price and then discount it by 20% in a couple of days so it doesn't get jacked up like @stemell is suggesting.

        • I think you have to put in the coupon code at time of purchase not time of payment.

    • By all means buy it now and pay on the day, what could possibly go wrong?

    • How's your potential bargain going?, doesn't look good at the moment.

      Has the price gone up?

      • currently $439. 2 hours before sale

      • whoops. looked at the wrong one. same price.

    • Stupid post price was always going to be jacked

      Better battery in this one

    • I've got 3 days to decide between this, the 1060 version or just cheaping out and getting the E570p or e580.

      • +1

        If you're a gamer definitely 1060 version.
Would recommend this over E570p (dell has 4GB of vram while lenovo has only 2GB).

        • I am a gamer but this thing won't be used for games, maybe once every few months as an emergency. Main draw card for the Lenovo is the better keyboard for the work i do.

          • @Powershopz: Whats the advantage of this keyboard ? Im also looking at this for very occasional gaming, but mostly as a high end computer to do my uni work on (studying psychology).
Im looking to up my typing speed (which is terribly slow atm). I dont mind paying a bit more, if keyboard will make typing faster and/or easier.

          • +4

            @Powershopz: @ozzpete:

A lot of the lenovo thinkpads are renowned for have fantastic keyboards for typing on. They have really good ergonomics and keyboard feel. I'm a senior commercial analyst and so a full size numpad is very nice to have and well placed keys for moving around spreadsheets is very nice to haev as well (pgup/pgdn/home/end/ins/del) despite the smaller arrow keys.

if it's just for typing either would suffice.

          • +3

            @Powershopz: @ozzpete:

Not sure why you need a high end computer for psychology?

          • @Powershopz: @serpserpserp:
Just because I have a $1,000 per simester scholarship which i must use for study expenses. I have to show receipts after each session, before they issue funds for next session.
So I have a bit left over after textbooks and stationary etc. A purchase like this would suit with left over funds (and some put $ in myself).
Im sure i don't 'need' a $1000 laptop, but if it makes things a little more efficent (with typing especially) then its money well spent. Also I guess it will last a bit longer before its obsolete and battery worn out.
In the past, I have purchased laptops a few years old from pawn shop at 50% off sale. I would look for something which was very high end a few years old, then upgrade ram, ssd etc.
Im guessing something like this should have great battery life, and if I upgrade ram, should be useful for about 5 years.

Love this website, I check every day. first thing in the morning after checking my email, usually read very interesting stuff people post in forums. Some of the stuff posted in forum can be very hilarious and the comments are more interesting than the news. Saved money from the deals posted like cashrewards, domino vouchers, and many more. Also a good place to read product review as well. If you post something and ask for help, there are always keen people reply you back. There are some useful product that I will never know it exist without looking at the deals posted. It has everything, it is truly the best place for shoppers. I will try to go to a ozbargain get together this year to meet awesome people like you. Didn't go to the paramatta one last december, due to distance etc. Hopefully they will hold one in the inner west like Strathfield this year.

Going the 1060 version, which will be at the 1359.20 price point that it reached over the boxing day eBay sales.

Getting it in advance of Jurassic World Evolution but have plenty of games to play before that drops.

    • +3

I don't know much about gaming laptops - is this the best I'll get in the ~$1000 price range?

I'm moving overseas and will be travelling a lot for work and need something to run CSGO high fps/low settings in my downtime. And maybe some PUBG. Trying to find the right balance between price/performance/weight/battery life.

      • +6

You won't get anything extra for this price anywhere else. I have the same computer with i7 cpu and 16gb memory and it rocks. That is the only difference and I doubt you will notice / can add memory as there are two empty slots. A little heavy as far as carrying a laptop, but that's cause I am used to macs.

      • Yeah this will do fine. I've been sussing out similar stuff on amazon us for about 1k but for this price local + warranty cant beat it. It'll also be my uni laptop.

      • +3

Yep, this is the new king of ~$1k performance, edging out the Lenovo by 2gb VRAM.

Except for that one time Acer had some crazy clearance sale with 1060 and 1070 laptops around the $1.1k mark, but only had like 2 in stock of each and were gone in milliseconds.

      • +4

One of the best things about this for gaming is the giant fans that vent the heat really well. Most laptops that are not high end gaming laptops don't bother with the proper ventilation which means they don't last very long and also usually limit the cpu or gpu when it gets too hot.

        • +1

Word. I use one of these and the heat dispersion is crazy good

    • Does anyone know whether this laptop has a spare slot for a HDD?

      • +1

        Yes it does. (2.5 HDD)

        • Do all of them have the spare slot?

$1359 gtx160 model looks perfect if it could just take a little more HDD space.

          • @SkyPoint: As long as you buy one that only comes with the SSD.

If you buy a model with 256GB SSD + 1TB HDD then there is no spare slot.

    • +1

Would anyone be able to link the gtx 1060 version?

    • Does anyone have a link to the 1060 version so i can compare?

    • +4

      Link to the 1060 version

I have the 1050Ti version from when Dell had the 20% off around EOFYS it's a great little machine. I do video, app development and gaming (pubg and even destiny 2) both run really well on it.

      Which one is better?
I want to spend about $1k or less. (Mainly looking for a laptop to do some graphics work. Things like adobe photoshop and illustrator)

      • +1

I'd think the bigger screen (only an inch mind you) would be better. I have this model and can attest it's awesome. Great value for money, both would be fine for you though. Unless you're planning on using Maya or CAD or something :-)

        • Thanks Stevles. I appreciate your feedback.

      • Serious question should I go the i7 and 1060 or i7 and 1050ti? I don't want to spend $1800 to get an i7 and 1060 honesty considering I have an expensive gaming rig already setup I just want a decent laptop since I haven't had a laptop for over 2 year's.

        • I'm in the same boat. Because I have a gaming rig already ony looking at around 1k mark for a decent laptop for work uni and some gaming. This will handle most games fine. If you have money or want it as a main user probably go 1060 otherwise value wise this is great.

    • Will they price jack this deal?

    • Will this be TRS eligible as its an invoice from Dell Australia or is it not eligible as the computer comes from Malaysia?

      • Only matters where invoice comes from. Don't over think it.

      • Should be eligible as you're paying GST and invoice is from Dell Australia.

    • +5

I have the i7 version with 8gb/128gb+1tb/ips/1050ti and am very happy with the performance, cooling and its gaming creds.

Everything runs fine including forza horizon 3 at medium to high details at a solid 60fps/1080p. I can share my 3dmark if that helps.

Still seeing deals like this continue less than 2 weeks later. Had I waited I could have got a better deal. After comparing specs things got a bit hectic so I'm very happy with what I have, hopefully others pounce on these better deals.
