  • Not sure if it’s the same update but I had even worse issues with a recent update. Ms office completely stopped working as well as the WiFi. Had to undo the update too but that didn’t fix Office, so I had to installed it again.

    • yeah so frustrating and time consuming :/ ggggrrrrrr

I'm on 1607, disabled updates after having enough of having to wait for them to install instead of actually using my computer when I turn it on. I don't even get alerts anymore.

  • I've updated about 10 systems all with very different hardware, not a problem mostly if you're using stock drivers that are installed by Windows.

If you have drivers that are 3rd party, check on the vendor's website for new revisions.

    • I have a handful of desktops and laptops and they all updated fine to 1709 however they have nothing exotic in them… ie. std. realtek whatever sound and AMD video card.

I feel like they're introducing new features that are meaningless and I like it how they hide the update sizes. Must be a few gig?

  • So tired with Windows constant updates.

I swear will get Chrome book when my current laptops dies.

Did you try updating the sound driver?

    1. Open Device Manager (devmgmt or Win + X > Device Manager)
    2. Expand 'Audio inputs and outputs'
    3. Update the driver for 'Speakers' (or whatever has the closest name)
    4. Select 'Search automatically'

If there aren't any updates found or you can't find the speakers in the device manager, search the manufacturer's page for drivers.

Unfortunately these kinds of issues can be expected with a big update like 1709 (Creator's Update). My laptop couldn't even update to 1709 (over 20 times it failed) so I had to manually install it from a flash drive.

Sucessfully installed 14/01/2018, no issues. I had already recently downloaded the latest drivers for all my hardware from the manafacturers sites and flashed my bios.

Have you uninstalled the sound drivers or pause/start? I've never had any problems with Windows updates except for once when i didn't have sound.

  • While I was updated the icon for 'speakers' was missing from the box in the control panel. (It is back now)
Any clues on how to avoid this when updating again?

  • re-installed the update and all is well this time *phew
