That's a very high-tech pair of paperweights you got there

'Buy one, get one free' '$48'

I don't know whether to laugh or cry

I paid extra when first released for the model with the kinect

I've only ever used it twice, to scan QR codes

    • I use mine all the time to voice control my Xbox as a media player.

      • I used to until I got a One X, now I can no longer use it

    • +1

      The IR blaster is cool

      • +1

The S and X have it built in thankfully.

  • Saw 1 come up on local FB beer economy, nearly went for it but I'd really only use it for voice control :/ Game selection is minimal, and none on Game Pass.

  • I always thought these things would have been appropriated by VR developers/enthusiasts for body / limb tracking, guess they were too expensive before as an extra addon and now are end-of-life so won't be picked up.

    • Funny you mention that. I went to the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney last Wednesday for their Future Park exhibit. All of the interactive components utilised Kinect cameras. Madam Tussaud's also had a display that I noticed used a Kinect too.

    • My favourite band muse use them on tour.

And then buy the adapter for $299!

    • If anyone legitimately wants to buy one keep an eye out on AliExpress, they occasionally have stock of third party ones for around $65 shipped. I got mine delivered about a week ago and it works fine.

      • I did this too. It looks like a 3rd party version but it works without issue. Fast delivery with EMS.

Good luck trying to find an adapter for Xbox short of $130 from Amazon US if you're lucky or some a hole on ebay selling them for $300.

    • +1

almost cheaper to buy a 1st gen xbox one

i would expect there are adapters and whatever to hook it to your pc? no?

  • +2

    Lol. Don't shoot the messenger!

I upgraded from the original Xbox One to an X and now my Kinect is sitting dormant…

  • Spoke to Microsoft support the other week after buying one myself and finding out the hard way the adapters were unavailable. I was informed New stock will be available for the US summer. Fingers crossed.

    • +1

Yep poor form all round. Force me to buy the Kinect if I wanted an Xbox One at launch, then abandon it. Then, not only did they not offer free adapters to those who upgraded from an original model to a One X like they did the One S, you you can't even buy them!

  • Microsoft stop making the adapter needed for XBox OneS/X to use Kinect. Most people interpret this as Microsoft given up on Kinect.

    • They've stopped making the Kinect itself, if you needed a further sign.

  • +2

Keep in mind as Microsoft discontinued the adaptor for the one s and x models, these have become very expensive to get a hold of. Unless you have an original model Xbox one I would stick clear

I've got a Kinect paperweight that Microsoft forced on us early adopters. Now I've upgraded to a One X, I can't even use it. Not happy

      • The price of early adoption. Live and learn.

        • How good is early adoption- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SW8DgKm-7vs

        • I've been an early adopter for many years and this was one of the lowest acts. Should never have made Kinect compulsory. It really hurt their launch and now they are being smashed by Sony this gen

        • @chromium: They bet big on Kinect. Wii was successful with its motion controls because they were in every box. Kinect and Move were not successful because they were optional peripherals that devs couldn't count on people owning.

MS wanted to make sure every Xbox owner had one, so that more devs would make Kinect games, and they wanted Kinect to be the next Wii-like success. They initially said the Xbox wouldn't even boot up if the Kinect wasn't connected. It was integral to the experience. That was how big they bet on Kinect. But that $100 premium meant that Sony ran away with it, and when MS decided to save the Xbox at the expense of the Kinect and unbundled it, all Kinect software development died out and so did the Kinect itself. It was a big gamble that backfired, and now no one is making games for it. All of that R&D was for nothing and in hindsight they shouldn't have forced it on users for $100 extra, because it cost them the console war as well as the Kinect. A double loser.

The other thing they could have done is eaten up the $100 cost. They can afford this but the higher ups (Satya) likely said no.

Skyping on it worked well for a group of people. That's all I ever used mine for after the work I had to do to properly mount it. So much potential.

  • I've heard of these, these are the future guys, get them while you still can!

  • +2

Good for dance games for the kids.

    • Yeah, but if you wanna upgrade to Xbox One S or Xbox One X and you don't have the adaptor, you can kiss those dance games good bye.

      Great thinking Microsoft!

And in the meantime Sony, who didn't force people to have the camera at the start, continue to make their camera for the PS4…

      • In fact they still actively use it to make their VR system work

  • +2

Adapter for newer Xbox one is discontinued from what I've heard from EB Games and online.

    https://www.theverge.com/circuitbreaker/2018/1/2/16842738/mi…

The Kinect is excellent for dancing games if you have parties but useless for anything else.

  • Anyone near Croydon, Vic wanna go halvsies on these?

At 24 I'll grab one for the shit of it, but I don't need two.

  • +2

There are some interesting uses for these other than on xbox.
Have seen some smart cookies use them for head tracking on virtual pinball cabinets.
    Very cool stuff!

    • That is amazing stuff.

  • Postage coming up as $5 for me. Was thinking of grabbing a couple and modding them to work with USB 3 without the need for an adapter.

I might try in store tomorrow so I can have them for the weekend

Adapter currently showing as in stock for $75 shipped for those interested:

  • I ended up grabbing 2 of these in store today. Ripped one apart and soldered a power adapter socket to it then replaced the cable with a USB cable. Works a treat. No adapter needed :)
