What Daily Watch Do I Get?

Hi All,

I've just accepted a job as Sales Manager at a prestige car dealership (ze germans!) and start in four weeks. I've previously been at volume dealers where appearance isn't as important but want to get myself a half-decent watch before starting. I don't want something flashy and over the top but know almost nothing about watches so want to get something that will look respectable.

My budget is up to $500 and I'll be wearing it daily until I add to the collection.

I'm a big guy so can't wear a small face.

As always, I want a bargain!

Was considering an Apple Watch, talk me in or out of that if you feel inclined…

  • At $500, Apple Watch, but one of the nicer versions. Forget about the likes of Emporio Armani and Boss as people know they are sub-class.

  • +1

    Tissot

  • Watches are very much down to personal taste. Everyone likes something different.

I like Apple products, they are my work and I have them all - except the watch. I think the Apple Watch is terribly ugly - why they went with a square face I will never know.

I just bought one of these - http://www.casio-intl.com/asia/en/wat/watch_detail/GST-S130L…

So everyone has different tastes, go with what you like. Plenty of big watches about.

    Imo, a nice automatic.
If you want something classy, have a look at the Hamilton Khakis (eg H64455133, H64455523) and Seiko Presage (eg Srpb46, Srpb041, Sary081 etc. )

The Sarb017 is very nice as well (once you have it on a steel bracelet) but it’s a 38mm case so not sure if it’s too small for you.

Otherwise if you prefer a busy dial and more of a modern/sporty look, have a look at some of the Citizen Eco-drives.

This AT4106-52x off the top of my head for eg., due to my brother asked me to import it for him, doesn’t look too shabby for around $400 landed in Oz with code
Radio controll won’t work in Oz for the most part but you can set it on a alternate timezone once and forget, quite confusing to set up but comes with some seriously nifty features: 1 main timezones and 5 predetermined extra zones, perpeptual calendar, saphire crystal, chrono, alarm, radio might sync depends on where you are, solar powered so don’t need to change battery every 2 yrs etc.
It’s pretty cool watching the hands run to the new correct positions every time you change timezones, couldn’t stop mucking around with it.

    • Thank you for the detailed post. I like the classier, less messy looks. Not a fan of the sporty style at all.

Going to head out and try a bunch of watches on tomorrow. Figure out what size I need and what works.

      • Seiko's SARB065 is also a nice watch, but it's apparently a Japan import. A very similar style would be SRPB43J1 which is more readily available.

        • where can i find SRPB43J1 with au warranty?

@PPrem: Starbuy DID have them at one point, and I emailed them to inquire about that specific model, and they said it's on order. Once I get an update, I'll ensure to post here.

      Nixon died in 1994.
      Nixon therefore represents death.

      • i like death
        we all die

        • Some sooner than others…

A social death can of course be accelerated by wearing a Nixon. RIP.

        • @AngryChicken:

you need some chicken because you're angry

  • CC9025-51E.
    Period.

This watch is giving me a headache just looking at it

  • Apple Watch for sure. Plus you can check incoming emails and texts discretely.

  • No self-respecting man wears an Apple watch.

Get a Samsung Gear or Garmin.

    • I've got an iPhone though…

      • Oh, then you have your answer. Apple watch it is.

    • I’d skip the smart watches altogether tho..

      • Why?

Normal watches are inferior. Functionality > Style. THis is the 21st century.

        • In my eyes they don’t say classy/elegent, they scream hipsters.
I do acknoledge that they do so much more than regular watches though, just not my style.
          To each his own.

    tissot seiko victorinox

  • +3

if you dont know, dont bother

just get a smart looking casual dress quartz citizen seiko watch

hell, even some of the casio analog watches look fine for work

  • Perhaps you will get more options if you reveal more info.

What attire will you be wearing? Auto or quartz? Do you want a SS bracelet or leather? Can you get a dressy diver? Do you want a chronograph? Date or no date.

Pretty hard to go wrong with a Seiko or Citizen. Have a look at some Seikos like the Presage line or SARB033. Try Victorinox. Tissot such as Visodate.

    • Also whether you want something waterproof that you can shower and swim in, as if so that will eliminate a whole bunch.

In my view the moment you're required to remove a watch is the same moment you risk losing it, forever, and ever, amen.

  • A slight increase in budget will get you a TAG HEUER Aquaracer Calibre S, as worn by my bro Fast Ed on Better Homes & Garden. He's been on that show for 15 years don't you know? Love watching the Fast Ed work his magic…

    • This.

  • Was considering an Apple Watch

    I'm a guy

    Choose one.

  • It's impossible to know really because it's so subjective ..

Have a look at Junkers Bauhaus.
    Comes in Automatic or quartz.
German watch. German design. Made in Germany.
