GTA IV Won't Launch on PC through Steam

Hey everyone,

Long story short I downloaded the humble bundle rockstar pack and I wanted to try out GTA IV. Tried to launch it through steam the first time, wouldn't even load. Games for windows live doesn't work either. I have looked through a number of threads and YouTube videos to see how to launch it through steam. I tried XLiveLess, launched it, game is stuck at the copyright screen for ages. After this happens my whole PC locks up and i cannot even close the application without fully restarting my PC. How have you guys got GTA IV to work on steam? Please let me know if you have found a solution, game is a complete joke.

Thanks

edit - i'm on windows 10.

  • I'm running it on Windows 10 without issues, but I haven't tried with XLiveLess recently. I did have to do a manual download of GFWL to get it up and running though, as it still uses that for multiplayer.

If you're interested in giving that a try, remove the XLiveLess patch, run the installer from here and give it another shot:

Also make sure you've grabbed the right version of XLiveLess for your game update. (Some older versions require you to downgrade the game using their downgrader)

    • hi mate thanks for the reply - how do i get gfwl up and running? i have installed it and don't know what to do.

      • It only includes the necessary files that any games that use the service require. The standalone GFWL client was shut down years ago. Once installed try loading up the game again.

With any luck, it'll get past the copyright screen and boot into the game now that it can interface with GFWL.

        • alright thanks, i'll give it a go. would it work with episodes from liberty city?

edit - didn't work with gfwl. was still stuck at the infinite loading screen :(

        • Damn. :(

Does EFLC work without crashing? Which version of XLiveLess did you use? I'll give it a go and see if it runs.

        • @OverburdenedWarrior: i dont think i installed xliveless properly. i also tried making .exe gta iv's run with compatibility mode for w vista service pack 2. no luck with that either.

        • @F4ncy2: Have you tried verifying the game files on Steam?

        • @OverburdenedWarrior: yep, now i actually stuffed up my whole game. game is currently stuck, says its running when it isn't and now i cannot even uninstall it. i cant close it from task manager, i cant uninstall it from control panel. this is giving me a headache. such a big fuss for this game :(

        • @F4ncy2: There's a program, Revo Uninstaller, the free version should be able to clean it up along with the leftover files. Sounds like it's time to fresh install it.

It's a good game though. It's a shame it didn't work the first time.

        • +1

@OverburdenedWarrior: yep. Doing a fresh install and going to install virtual box and launch it through windows vista via that. Hope it works

  • sadness you cant play and make mum jokes

  • any luck with this? i have the same issue.

    • +1

Sorry mate can’t remember what I did to get it working. I’ll try find a YouTube video that may help you.

That might work but it worked for me.

  • Hopefully you dont have to stuff around after getting it to work, spent a few hours trying to get it to a point where cutscenes and other physics were running as intended, but only issue if youre running a high frame rate, nothing more fun than floatier car handling XD
