Opinions on pCloud?

I have exceeded my dropbox storage and needed additional storage for backing up my photos, documents, etc. Dropbox's cost is very high ($139 usd per year for 1TB storage). I also have onedrive but prefers dropbox because of its simplicity.

So someone suggested me to try pcloud recently and i signed up. The premium account is $250 for 2TB but for unlimited years. So this seems like a good deal in the long run.

Wondering what do ozbargainers think of pcloud? Opinions/comments welcome.

Thanks

I have purchased the 2 TB lifetime option for $250 and like it.

By default, the drive is virtual - meaning, it will take a little time for the files to be opened/saved etc. The advantage is that it does not take up any space on the computer. I use this for cold storage.

You can place any folders and files that must have fast access to (and these will take up file space on the disk) inside the "pCloud Sync" folder. I place scans of important docs like Passports, Medicare, DL here.

The web interface is nice and sharing features are great.

Take a look at their comprehensive FAQs here: https://www.pcloud.com/help/general-help-center/

In my experience, the drive became unavailable (does not appear in the Finder) a few times on my Mac. I would then either reinstall the software or restart my computer. A minor annoyance, but not a deal breaker.

    • Thanks for your comments. Another thing I quite like is that Pcloud premium offers encryption for all the files which should be good for important documents.

What do you think of pcloud vs dropbox?

      • I use Dropbox (free account of 21.4 GB capacity) as well. It is my main sync/cloud storage service.

Anything that I don't need to use on a day to day basis goes in pCloud. I treat it like a garage or trunk box.

You might want to try pCloud for a few days and see if it meets your needs.

        • Thanks. I have just backup my files directly from dropbox to pcloud. A very painless process. It even offer direct backup from onedrive as well. But obviously I cannot try that because I don't have sufficient pcloud storage yet.

How I wish they offer a discount to the premium plan :)

      • Maybe this article can help you decide

        • Thanks. Snowden says drop dropbox and use encyrpted service such as spideroak. I have used spideroak in the past but the experience is very poor. I no longer uses it.

After reading the article, pCloud seems very attractive indeed.

  • $250US on a 'lifetime' account.. Are you serious? There is a very real possibility it will close down and you'll lose your money. Only founded in 2013.

I use Resilio sync to sync my Documents folder to my NAS/Server. This happens in real time. Four times per day my server syncs with Google Cloud storage with rclone. Thus far I haven't paid for Google cloud as I am still using the free credit. When this expires/runs out I'll switch to Backblaze B2. I currently have 120gb stored. Just photos and documents.

If it is simply for backup look into Backblaze / Backblaze B2. It is cheap and does not require a 'lifetime' subscription. There are fees to download but… If it is an emergency who cares?

    • Thanks. I did look into blackblaze but the pricing policy charge based on the amount of data you uploaded and downloaded. Not sure I like this kind of fee structure. Granted I don't have 100TB of data to upload.

    • a very real possibility it will close down

2 years later it's still going strong; more features; growing user base.

I'm considering signing up which is why I'm browsing old threads. Lifetime fee is "set and forget" which is valuable to me.

The new features I like include adding passwords on links, and inviting non-pCloud users to upload things to your cloud. I also like that you can place HTML files in folders, and basically have a little web host. Also the media player, API access, and you get to select Eu data centre on sign up. It's quite an impressive set of features.

On the subject of "they could close down", well so could any Google service, and we've seen that happen a few times. While Google won't go anywhere, they've been ruthless in killing their own products. At least with pCloud, their only product is their whole business.

  • They also do $5 per month fixed price unlimited.

    • Thanks mate. I overlooked that blackblaze actually has a personal backup pricing. $5 per month or $50 per year sounds good.

It would seem that blackblaze is really meant for cold storage and pcloud meant for both live/cold storage.

      What do others think?

Edit: i just sign up for a free 15 days trial of blackblaze and upon installing the client, it wants to backup my C:\ProgramData which I don't want it to because that is not where my data is stored. Can't find a way to exclude this directory! :(

Edit2: Found the way to exclude directories :)

  • I'd say the $5pm plan is hot storage. You can access etc as needed. That said, it is not like dropbox - it doesn't have a seperate folder for your files. It functions as a full system backup.

B2 can be configured to back up specific folders and scheduled using rclone and cron.

For live storage like Dropbox there is Mega which has 50gb for free.

  • seems they've raised it up to $350 for the lifetime plan. Plus another $125 for enabling encryption

    • that's a bit steep :(
