Is this a decent vpn to watch CBC to stream olympics? Netflix geo blocking? Looking for a versatile and fast vpn for a good price I can use for above and to gain access to torrent sites (for research purposes)

    • for Netflix/TV Chanels you're better off using a DNS service, as they'll be quicker. But remember withnetflix if they start their geo-dodging swatting again, you'll lose it.
      e.g. DNS4ME, GetFlix
      https://dns4me.net/channels/canadian-broadcasting-corporatio…

VPN is best for torrents (for those Raspberry Pi & Linux distro you like to grab)

  • NO, too slow and Netflix US don't work

  • I used it for a few months now, can get to my max on a slow adsl2 normally, except peak hours but that's my isp.
Youtube ok, p2p fine. If you need more than that you have pay decent price.

  • Windscribe VPN Pro Lifetime Subscription $41.40 (~AU$52.32) is pretty good. If you get 10 years, why not.

  • Added 3-year subscription, tried to add the code and ended up with "Cannot use coupon with the items in your cart."

  • also check StackSocial for plenty of lifetime VPN options
    https://stacksocial.com/search?cat=477&query=VPN

I use Ivacy as my backup ($us30 lifetime) and it works well.

My free version struggles to connect much of the time. Is the paid pro version any better?

  • I wonder what the definition of lifetime is for these products? It's not realistic to think that you will be connected to a quality service for many years.

  • Is it faster than the free or giveaway version? That is very slow.

  • I have setup this on my Asus router and it still shows my local DNS… I am unable to access Geo restricted content .. though it works alright with desktop app and chrome extension.. both needs to be turned on to access geo restricted content otherwise no luck.. But I can't get this working on my router.. have raised the issue with them but no help yet and pretty slow correspondence..
and the speed is not good enough for video streaming services on most of the servers.

    • I have setup this on my Asus router and it still shows my local DNS…

Did you do step 6 on this setup guide?
      https://windscribe.com/guides/asus

      • already done that , tried a lot but no luck… I have tried different both udp and tcp with different port numbers but no luck… any advice on port numbers selection with UDP/TCP ?

        • When visiting https://ipleak.net do you see your ISP's DNS server(s)?

        • @chupa chup:
not always, but it always shows australian DNS servers, doesn't matter what country's IP i set to

        • @koolchamp81:
Is your Asus router connected to a modem/router?

        • @chupa chup:
yes, am I setting it up wrong ?

        • @koolchamp81:

Your modem/router seems to be overriding your DNS settings in the Asus router.

Can you change the DNS settings (WAN) in your modem/router?

If its a ISP supplied one you may be out of luck.

Edit: Can you run modem/router in bridged mode?

        • @chupa chup:
if I change the dns on the modem/router , won't it affect the speed of the normal connection… ,
the problem is it always shows local Australian DNS in ipleak.net or any other site . It changes the DNS server but to another Australian server.

        • @koolchamp81:

Don't be concerned about seeing Australian opendns servers when you are connected via vpn.

What you don't want to see is your ISP's DNS servers. This causes sites like TPB to be blocked even when connected via vpn.

Changing DNS will enhance your connection. ;)

        • @chupa chup:
but if it shows Australian dns then how to access other countries geo restricted content? I might be wrong here

        • @koolchamp81:

If you're trying to access bbc-iplayer/us-uk-ca-netflix/hulu etc via windscribe and they don't support it look elsewhere.

Using opendns servers on your router won't help.

Look at getflix for dns geo unblocking of video content.
Trimium vpn for unblocking netflix in multiple countries.

        • @chupa chup:
I might try some smart dns .. thanks for your help though

  • iPlayer doesn't work when connected to the UK server.

  • do you need a VPN if surfing the net using mobile data on an android or windows phone?
