How long have you been in the industry? How hard was it to secure employment after completing your qualification?
What would you say the percentage of males is in nursing?
Thanks in advance for the info.

    • +1

      5 years in the industry.

Plenty of work around. I'd feel fairly comfortable being able to relocate (mostly) anywhere in Aus to gain employment. Also the career directions you can take are really broad. You can do post grad specialisation, management, research, education.

Obviously still female dominated, hence why I added my gender in the title for a different perspective. I'd say 35:65 ish ratio where I work

  • Have you dealt with patients who have accidentally fallen on objects, which have then become lodged in their rectum?

If so, how frequently does this happen and what was the most impressive object?

    • Haven't seen any rectal ones yet
Seen a few tampons stuck in the front though, have to use a speculum to get it out.

  • Was Mr Focker your inspiration?

Heh yes. My brother likes that joke too, never gets old.

Do all the doctors hit on you?

    • The Drs are fairly professional. It's not like Grey's Anatomy.

    I have no questions.

    • Many thanks for your input

No problems let me know if you need anything else.

        • Do you have anymore no questions I need some not.

  • Why do you feel the need to state that you are male?
Other AMA posts dont state what sex they are

    • Why do you feel the need to ask that question?
      Tell us about your mother.

      • -1

Im entitled to ask a question.
Dont project your psychological issues onto me, if youve got mummy issues deal with them. My mother is a great parent and she happens to be a Registered Nurse. Ive never heard her identify herself as a female nurse and I was curious as to why a man would call himself a male nurse, thats all.

        • Hmmm, interesting. Tell me more.

I don't feel the need to announce my gender in the title, just opening up the conversation. I wasn't ware of the rigid AMA structuring guidelines. I also didn't use brackets around AMA, I like to be different :)

There still seems to be a lot of stigma and preconceptions of men in nursing. I'm just offering a different perspective in an otherwise female dominated profession.

  • so, do you get paid by AusPost or the Hospital?

    • +1

Your tax dollars pay my salary, so thank you.

Will you ever respond to these questions?

  • What do you think of the Victorian governments legislation to jail health care workers for up to 10 years if they say anything slightly negative (even if it's factual) about vaccinations? (No I don't want 'that' debate, just wondering how trained medical personnel feel about medically unqualified politicians practising medicine without a license and dictating how doctors can treat their patients?)

    • Can you show me this legislation. As far as I know, there are severe disciplinary actions but it has never been classified as criminal.

Ps. The ruling against anti-vaxxers are on instruction of overwhelming evidence supported senior doctors.

      • Actually I'm still hoping it was an Onion or Beetoota article.

Here's a statement from the nursing board (doesn't mention the jail time).

        http://www.nursingmidwiferyboard.gov.au/Codes-Guidelines-Sta… (2016)

This one mentions 'the new law' but not the name of the legislation.

        http://yournewswire.com/vaccine-skepticism-australia-jail/

From Cairns news: https://cairnsnews.org/2017/06/24/vaccine-skepticism-in-aust… (again links to the your news wire article)

Hmmm, so anyway while the link from the nurses website is legit it seems the 'interpretation' of it that made all the claims, tracks back to the 'your news wire' site, not a particularly trustworthy site from some accounts. So on the bright side, things aren't quite as bad as I surmised but on the downside it might take a few hours to get all the egg off my face. Sorry guys. (It's getting way too hard to tell fake news and satire from the real news these days. :( )

        • There's not much of that egg left.

It's good to know you are capable of accepting new evidence. A rare breed these days.

  • Good question, I wasn't aware of this legislation, it sounds pretty extreme. As with anything it's always frustrating when government has these knee jerk reactions.
It's similar to other contentious health/ethical issues such as euthanasia. It's easier to judge these things from afar and not having lived it personally.

I've seen children battle with measles and whooping cough, some unfortunately losing their life. It has to be every parent's worst nightmare.

  • One of my old mates is a male nurse.

I felt bad that the first question asked by the group was, "so what is you bra size?".

I felt even worse because I laughed so hard my nose went runny.

It's a rewarding career. Hope it is everything you thought it would be.

    • I think you need to have a good sense of humour in nursing because you see and experience some pretty intense stuff. I hope your mate took it on the chin and had a laugh too.

      Cheers for your last comment.

      • took it on the chin

        Haha lol.

  • Hi Op, no offensehere just curious though how is your dating experience as a male nurse, do you see/feel you have more opportunities?

    Thank you

  • Working in a female dominated field, how do you cope with earning more money for the exact same job?

At least that's what I am led to believe.
