  • Does anybody else have trouble with getting Optus to post out their sim card? My experience is I place an order online and then order appears to go through successfully. Wait a week, nothing has happened. Call them and they say they manually have to push my order through for some reason and I should receive the sim card soon. Wait another week, still no sim card. Chase them up and they say it should arrive soon, wait another week and it still hasn't arrived. Needless to say I have now given up on this sim card ever arriving and have gone with another carrier instead.

  • currently on a sim only plan for $40 a month with only 12 gig. Tried to upgrade to this but they wouldnt without giving me a $100 cancellation fee (contract ends in november). kinda sucky seeings as it is basically the same deal, and i am still signing on with them for another 2 years.

    • +1

You'd only be signing for 12months

      • so true.

    • same here, current 40/m 14gb, plan expried in AUG 2018

tried twice online chats last night, both said I need to pay the cancellation fees. so sad.

    • ask to be transferred to the retention team :)

  • -5

15GB + 5GB Telstra plan with Google Pixel 2 XL or one of the other phones for $59/month is still a better deal

  • -1

    Is Netflix unmetered?

    • in SD yes

      • Does this mean that when you're streaming netflix HD for example, only the portion over 1.5MBps of bandwidth used is metered?

        • No. It means if you are watching Netflix in SD upto 1.5 MBps, it is unmetered. HD is metered.

    • -1

on $40 byo handset netflix is metered, you can check online chat and in store.

  • +2

Thanks. Wifey and I were both on 15gb so now we're both on 30gb. Great pool!

Shame they don't have a $25ish plan where the double is 15GB. Would rather save money than get more data.

    • +2

It's not an accident that the sweet spot for SIM-only plans used to be "$20 with about as much data as you need" and is now "$30 with far more data than you need". Pushed up that average customer spend by 50% for a negligible increase in costs.

  • +1

    Geez the optus network is going to get hammered with these huge data plans :{

    • +1

You would assume that they would build instruction to match. I still am getting 95Mbs on Optus 4G at home, so haven't noticed a drop yet.

      • Wow, in what area? Tops I’ve received is 55mbps on Optus 4G in Melbourne CBD.

        • Heathridge, WA. I was surprised as well because I thought it was my HFC, then I realised I had wifi turned off. Still getting 45Mbps on HFC 50 Plan with TPG, so no complaints from me regarding NBN.

        • @smigglejiggle:
I guess Optus really hates Victoria :/
          Lucky you though!

  • Does this have speed throttle or capped at low speeds like the previous deal?

    Previous deal

    • no - that was due to unlimited data :)

      • Sweet

    • They'll cap netflix stan abc etc to 1.5mbps according to the terms and conditions.

"All for use in Australia. Fair Go Policy applies. Stream SD video up to 1.5Mbps & music up to 512kbps."

  • If I was to get one of these plans, can I use the data to hotspot at home rather than pay for home internet? Or does data get used quicker for hotspotting? Also can you screen mirror from an iphone to a tv using the mobile tv streaming?

    • I do this for my 100gb plan, use a Hotspot WiFi or yes you can use a device. Data usage is depending on the user.

And no to Screen mirror via iphone.

    • In my experience, screen mirroring Netflix to an Apple TV does not count towards data usage (i.e. it is unmetered) if the Apple TV is connected to my phone's hotspot.

  • Im on live chat with Optus now.
Do they still offer the $10 discount for bundling with Optus Broadband?
Sales rep on Live Chat said as its a Double Data Offer, no further discounts. :(

    • I have an existing $10 rebate on my account. They said if I keep my broadband account the discount should apply.

      • Yeah Ive already got it atm on my old $40 / 10gb plan from 2015.
I'll try again with another Live Chat sales rep.

        • Hey mate, interested to hear if you have any luck with this, i haven't been able to retain my bundling discount.

I was also previously on the old $40 / 10gb when I last had the discount, now on $40/20gb and lost it.

        • @stuffedcrust: No luck with keeping the $10 Optus bundling discount on the new doubledata plan so I didnt take up the offer. :(
I'd rather keep that $40/10gb plan and continue paying $30.
I dont go over my 10gb/m allocation anyway but it would've been nice to have extra data.

        • @MrJohnnyD: I had this long and onerous chat with optus because I wanted to confirm that I would still get the $10 rebate. After speaking to 4 different people, the sales guy said it was retained. So maybe I got lucky. I said I wouldn't re-contract if it wasn't.

  • 1.Currently, I am with Optus on a sim card only play for 40/m 14gb data (expired in AUG 2018), I will do a recontract with Double data explosion, but not sure any cancellation fees.

    1. I wanna sign up a new sim card only plan for my partner under my name, not sure whether I can get this double data deal or not.

Most important thing is how much discount I can get for signing two plans? anyone had the same situation?

will chat with optus, update later

    • Shouldn't have fees if same price plan or greater

      • NO, tried twice last night, both said I need to pay the cancellation fees. so sad.

    • +1

Was in the same situation for my plan - $40/15GB, expiring in July 2018. I called and they upgraded me with no cancellation fee. Not sure about the two plans discount!

      • Tried two online chats last night, they all refuse to wave the cancellation fees. They said the one who has been told not to charge cancellation fess will be charged later. Ridiculous!
Furthermore, they said no discount for signing additional plan.
How did you get them waved your fees? Is that really depend on which staff I talk to?

        • Not sure man, that sucks. I got no luck from online chat but the first person I spoke to on the phone agreed to it straight away. As an added bonus, I've looked at my plan and it's now saying I have 45GB for $40! As in they just added 30GB to my existing plan… Strange but I'm not complaining :)

        • @mrbooger: You r a lucky man. I think I should try phone call instead of online chat.
I think the 30gb is only for the firt month, for next month you will get 30gb.

  • I only just signed up on the $40/20GB plan… I've submitted an order for the $50/60GB.

    • I had to speak to a rep & they've upgraded my plan with no cancellation fee.

  • Does mobile TV = free Netflix watching (I don't mean free Netflix account), just that the data is unmetered?

    • Yes but only in SD

    • $40 byo handset sim only post paid they meter netflix ….. you need to check the exact plan, some they don’t meter netflix , and if you are big watcher of netflix on your phone that. might determine the plan you buy.

  • So I'm on the $65 My Plan Plus attached to the iPhone X I got through Optus - which gives me 7GB. Is there anyway I can downgrade to get more GB or at the very least, get more GB for what I'm paying? I know I should be asking Optus, but wondering if any of you OzBargainers know this already, thanks!

    • if you have months left on your contract, you have no chance tbh.. they'll hit you with termination fees. You're better off getting this sim + a wifi hotspot modem or use an old phone as a hotspot

      • That's what I thought :( I have MANY months left on the contract. I would've assumed it might be ok if you had <12 months to go.

  • +1

Too bad their signal is soo shit where I am I barely get 5mbps…

  • just upgraded my 15GB/$40 to this one. They waived the cancellation fee for "loyal customer" otherwise you need to cancel and sign a new one for this.

    • then tried to sell me data plan, ipad, home broadband, etc. basically everything that you can find on their website..

    • Strange that a few people are mentioning termination fees. My contract doesn't end until June this year, and my rep didn't mention anything.

      • you got lucky, I'm getting told I have to pay cancellation fee to changeover and one of my plans has 3 months left.

      • the rep mentioned it for each of my registered number. I have 2 so I need to pay $100+ for cancellation.

anyway, i asked nicely if it can be waived and the rep said the above.

      • they have never charged me for post paid renewal before contract expiration a cancellation fee.

        • Tried two online chats last night, no luck.
Both said I have to pay the cancellation fee.

        • @saihot: ask to be transferred to the retention team :)

just a head's up.. currently with the previous $40/m 12gig sim only plan

    Lisa K • 11:48 AM
    Contract end date is 03/07/2018
    Lisa K • 11:49 AM
If you re-contract with sim plan then there will be Early Termination Fee : $36.00
    You • 11:49 AM
oh there's a termination fee? on websites I noticed others did not get a termination fee?
    Lisa K • 11:50 AM
If your number is under contract and re-contract to another sim plan then there will be charges

next minute.. tries to sell me an ADSL2 plan

    • Well….. yeah

  • Thank you, I was on a $40 plan with 15gb but have upgraded to this $40/30gb for another 12 months
I upgraded through chat without having to pay out any cancellation fess so you can do it, you just have to get the right rep!

  • Is there a way to remove/cancel the Optus Sport subscription? I know it's included in the plan for 12 months, but it's not something I need and I don't want to get hit with any fees if I happen to stay on this plan past the 12 month period.

    • +1

I believe you can simply just elect not to turn each free inclusion on, including the free music/mobile tv streaming.

  • Guys, for any of you who signed up/upgraded to the 20gb/$40 plan last week please be careful. Upgraded my existing (15GB/$40 last year) optus post paid plan (was still under contract) to the 20GB Plan last week. Saw this current plan offering and thought 30GB is better then 20Gb why not.

Logged in and put my order through, all good right? I got a message from optus asking me to call them. Upon calling (call center was somewhere other than Australia) I was told I was going to be charged a 200+ dollar cancellation fee for the 20GB/$40 i sign up for last week. Even throught there is a option that clearly states upgrade from current optus plan.

After 10 mintues is trying to explain logic it was not getting to this person and eventually got them to agree to leave me on the 20gb/$40 and null the cancellation fee.

Any thoughts? Did i miss something here or should have i been allow to upgrade my existing contract?

    • +1

This is much the same problem I am having (literally signed up to their $36/20gb student plan over the weekend, recontracting on an old grandfathered $40 for 10gb plan). in a weird way, its reassuring to know that optus tried to sting you with the $200 cancellation fee as i was considering doing the old "recontract online" thing and see if they notice.

    • is there an early termination fee on your 20G plan CIS that you signed up last week?

it states you can upgrade from current plan, which you did, with an ETF that i presumably mentioned on you 20G plan CIS. it seems everything is working regardless benificts you or not.

  • Currently playing hardball with customer service via online chat…

I'm already on contract for ~60/month for s8 and 15gb data (thanks ozbargain) with 1+ year remaining - have been offered to recontract to the 60/month for 100gb but have to obviously repay handset. Only catch is handset repayment must be split over a max of three bills which is a bit hectic. 100gb for 60/month sounds sweet but just dont know if its worth the rushed handset repayments…

    • Depends if you really need the extra GB's. I'm sure looking at recent trends, you'll have plenty more options in a year's time…FOMO seems to be creeping in (not necessarily for you, but in general), and not sure if that should be the case.

      • I've recently just moved into an apartment that's affected by the nbn hfc signup freeze and my 4g is much faster than the adsl I get here; so I've been tethering a lot more than usual. You're most certainly right though, if this keeps up, 100gb will probably be the norm.

    • Imagine what the data cap will be in one years time when you can get the S10

  • +2

As a sim slut, my current mobile phone cost is only $ 10-15 per month. If I'm not happy with a provider or out of data, just move on to the next one.

Why would I want to be tied down to one provider, possibly be suffering in a monogamous relationship with an incompetent provider? If I wanted to part ways, the divorce cost or break contract fee can be expensive.

    • +1

You should ask those iPhone X users on 36month contracts :)

    • What do you get for your $10-15 per month?. And out of interest, which provider is it?.

      • -4

Never advertised, the best bargain is, my young padawan.

  • I chatted with Optus once and they said $77 cancellation fee. I'm on $40 for 15GB plan and I did the upgrade online myself. Not sure if I will have to cancellation fee later.

    • If you got a temporary order number, it will not say there's a cancellation fee. A temp order number means it goes to a back end rep that process it manually.

      • So my order was confirmed, it didnt appear to have any cancellation fee but instead of extra 15GB /month (i'm currently on 15GB) it gave me extra 5GB/month only, adding to 20GB/month and upon upgrading, optus sport was free to add to cart but now it appears as extra $15/month on my plan. WHAT THE HECK OPTUS!

        • They added Optus sport to my account too even though I didn’t request it. They also put me on an old plan without the Double data! An hour on the phone and all was sorted out but very painful. If only they could just do what I signed up for!

Check what additional offers are listed on the contract they send you.

        • @BargainHunter09: thanks for telling. I just called them like you did and they fixed it. The guy didnt even know about double data offer and needed to talk to manager. Also even though I received Optus sport for $15/month in the confirmation email, the guy told me to disregard that, it's actually free.

        • Where your plan includes Optus Sport at no additional cost, your bill will show a $15 charge and corresponding credit.

  • -2

Will the optus network cope with a customer downloading 30GB? what about 4000 customers?

    • +1

      in a month? yes :)

  • so according to their normal plan page, international minutes are intact. Just spoke with a rep to confirm as well

    http://www.optus.com.au/shop/mobile/phones/sim-only

    • Optus Mobile 12mth Contract SIM Only $40/$50/$60pm: 30/60/100GB, Unlimited Calls+Texts, Up to 300/400/500 International Minutes

  • God Optus live chat is just the worst. I told them I was leaving for Virgin two days ago as they provide a better deal on the same network and they advised me that they cant get me a better deal so I left and two days after this happens.

    • +2

To be fair, the people on the chat probably didn't know this was coming until yesterday.

  • Can anyone get the student discount? I've tried and failed.

  • One of my accounts required me to call up to verify, and they tried to upsell me a galaxy tab and an ipad… zzz

  • Thanks OP. Recontracted from $36/12GB to $36/30GB with the student discount but had to pay $24 fee as my current plan was due to expire in May. Overall happy with the deal.

  • Thanks OP.. going to port my services over from ovo.. better bang for buck here

  • Is there any way to get a spare sim to share data with a pocket wifi at home?
If possible, would be great cuz I don't need this much data… I am thinking to cancel my ADSL at home and use the hotspot for home usage. any insight?

  • For anyone that has taken up this offer, when you view your Optus account online, or use the MyOptus app, do you see the bonus data available? I just upgraded, but only see the standard data (eg. 15gb) available, not the bonus.

Online chat person said it may take 24-48 hours for the bonus data to appear. Anyone else in the same situation? Should I be concerned? Or is the data Pro-rated and I only get half the data till the end of the month.

    Thanks

    • no it seems the deal appears as dec 2017 deal eg 15gb or 30gb for the $50 plan, they it adds double data as a bonus …… they don’t actually have a a $50 mar 2018 60 gb deal, it’s dec 2017 and bonus data added.

it appears with the right amount when you check the app on your phone how much data you have left for the month.

  • +3

Sweet got the termination fee waived and student discount, $54/mth for 100gb. Time to cancel my crappy "unlimited" ADSL2+

  • Thanks OP - I was able to sign up to the $40 plan and use my student discount. I'm now paying $36 a month instead of the old $47 plan and i'm getting the same data + all the new Optus perks.

  • Hi I joined oz bargain just to leave a comment about OPTUS although I come here everyday I was not a member until now. I used optus until a week ago they are ok if you don't have a problem but if you do - as I did you are in call center hell. I was overcharged 180 on my account over several months no worries says the call center you will get credit next billing cycle. long story short after 7 phone calls and 8 weeks of waiting including one visit to the optus shop no joy I have one 90 dollar credit. The company keeps you at arms length you cant speak to anyone who will sort out your problem and you keep getting bombarded with account restriction emails late payment texts etc. I was paying 100 pm now I pay 8 and have taken my business elsewhere. I have also lodged a complaint to the TIO. Optus is fine until you have a problem once that happens you are in call center hell totally inadequate for a multi billion dollar company.
