Looking for a seat for new born any recommendations?

    • +7

I can't say which specific model to buy, but I wish I'd asked myself these questions when narrowing it down for the two seats I've bought:

      • Is the width of the seat important in terms of operating seat levers, passenger comfort etc? Have I measured the back seat of my car to work out what width(s) I have to play with? This matters most if you intend to put multiple seats across the second row or, if you have an SUV or People mover, access to the third row.

      • Do I want ISOFIX or Seatbelt? (ISOFIX is only to 4yrs old under Australian law so if you want a seat that will do 0-8yrs it must be seatbelt)

      • Do I want to use it for a second (or third) child? This will affect how much $$ you spend towards durability and things like easily washable covers etc.

      • Spot on tycho, as a parent of four young children these are the questions I wish I thought about when buying the first couple of seats. I might jump at this because we have two moving to boosters in the next couple of years. Actually better wait to get approval from the minister of finance when she wakes.

      • Right i dont wanna spend alot and also dont want somethit which is under the australian standard have seen some at baby buntung and big w but need recommendation i drive a honda accord euro

        • Answering tycho’s q’s will help get an appropriate recommendation.

All seats sold here will meet Au standards

      • Right now its for 1st baby only the passenger comfort doesnt matter as 95 percent of time its me and my wife only for short drives max 30 minute i dont have much knowledge about baby car seats

Still need to consider width and rear facing depth. Some of my seats are so wide that no-one can sit in the middle. Likewise a large rear facing depth might result in you having to sit uncomfortably in the front.

Recommendations are to get a good extended rear facing 0 to 4 seat like an Infasecure Quattro, Baby love ezy switch or Britax Safe n Sound Compaq or whatever the current name for them is. Once bub outgrows that seat, get a harnessed booster like a Britax Safe n Sound Maxi Guard or a Baby love Ezy Grow.

My personal recommendations is seats made by IGC Dorel (mothers choice, maxi cozy, safety first) tend to have lower height markers so avoid, I think a capsule is a waste of money but others think different and I don't see the benefit in Isofix.

        • @tissue:

          @tissue:
Also there are really only three main seat manufacturers. IGC Dorel, Britax (safe n sound, Baby love, hipod) and Infasecure. They all sell similar seats with different fabrics to avoid stores being able to price match. Basically the plastic shell and straps are the same across models, just some have additional padding or inserts, better fabrics, cup holders, etc

Also don't put much weight in those CREP testing scores. They tend to be behind with their testing, as some of their latest results are seats that are already superseded models, different results across the same 'shell' models, one star for ease of install for booster seats, etc. Basically any seat on the market is just as safe as it meets the standard.

    • There are a few options for newborns and all carseats sold in Australia meet Australian Safety Standards.

A capsule can be removed from the car and can click onto some prams, so the baby doesn't need to be unstrapped from the car and then strapped into a pram. These can only be used from birth to about 6mths. There are plenty of these available second hand.

A 0-4 years car seat can be rear facing while the baby is young and then forward facing as they grow. They're available in isofix and normal seatbelt.

A 0-8 years car seat transforms from rear facing to forward facing to a booster seat.

It'll all be up to personal preference - some people love the capsule and don't mind having to buy another car seat in 6mths time. Others go for the 0-8 and don't have to ever change.

I think it's important to remember that all car seats comply to safety standards so you don't have to get an $800 car seat if you don't want. www.childcarseats.com.au list the safety rating for most seats.

mine are getting to the age of booster seats, well they are actually getting to the age of roof racks.

  • Mate my personal recommendation - followed advice of a cluey sister in law who had 3 kids and we’re on our second: get a capsule for 0-8 months or so depending on kid ours stayed in until 9-10 months easy. I find britax ones are spacious. Then get 6months - 8 years child seat. They are spacious expandable and have advantage of 5-point harness until 8 yo. Get the most expensive for that as it’ll have to last. My 2c

    • Capsule is bloody brilliant ad the newborn just chills and you can plug it into car or into pram either way the kid is undisturbed and cozy

  • All good advice from those above. If you don't want to spend a lot of money and aren't sure what you want, you could look at renting from Kidsafe - https://kidsafe.com.au/

Not sure about your state, but I believe Kidsafe in most states/territories offers rentals. They are pretty cheap plus give you a good idea of what works for you and your car.

A few friends have borrowed the capsule stage from them as $200-300 is a lot for a few months of use.

  • Dispatch time 1 to 3 months..
