Starhub Internet Data-Only SIM 2GB/Day for 15 Days Valid in 17 Countries @ SGD $32 (Purchase in Singapore)

1640

Hello everyone,

Came across this wonderful (or should I say rather revolutionary) travel data SIM while transiting through Singapore on my way to Japan. The lady behind UOB counter mentioned that it's a new data plan by StarHub.

Basically for $32 you get 2GB per day at 4G speed and valid in 18 17 countries (current Happy Roam countries) for 15 days.
It's absolute treat for travellers to the included countries and transiting via Singapore. SIMs can be purchased at UOB money exchange outlets in transit area.

There is a similar $18 option available as well for those visiting upto 5 days.

Have a good one..!!

(P.S. Apologies for less descriptive post as I'm typing this on my phone while heading towards my boarding gate to catch the next leg of my journey)

  • Just to share my experience with this Sim. Sign up is seamless, the lady behind the counter at uob helped me out setting up the Sim in my phone, activate it etc.

Issue arise next day however after streaming YouTube video it just stop. Check apn setting and roaming setting all ok. Reboot the phone no go.

Tried to contact starhub helpdesk and they mentioned that I need to have an $8 credit to use the roaming and $3 if I use locally in Singapore. I mean where has my $32 credit gone ??

    • Did you ever find out where your data went?

  • sharing my experience with the StarHub SIM as well.
I use it whenever I travel, as it is relatively cheap and fuss-free.
additional bonus of not needing VPN as it is not restricted by the Great Firewall of China.

  • Is it possible to switch a Starhub Internet SIM to use regular Happy Roam Plans? or are you locked in to using internet sim plans?

    • You can chat with them on FB to ask.

  • Why is this ↑ a deal, when Starhub offers another sim for $12, lasts 7 days, includes 100gb, 30min calls and 100 sms?

    • Because this deal was posted before Starhub bring out that new plan.

      • That explains

      • +1

ignore my reply above, as explain below the sim you mention is only for local use so it is useless outside Singapore.

Starhub now has 2 different SIM and you can't swap between these 2 sim plans.

        • Data only SIM as in this deal which has 2GB/day limit, with welcome offer is pretty good as in this post ($32/15 days/2GB per day) but the ongoing plan is not so cheap for low usage.

          1 Day $6 2GB/Day*
          3 Days $16 2GB/Day*
          7 Days $25 2GB/Day*
30 Days $28 Total of 2GB over 30 days —— this option is worse than the Voice, SMS, Data sim
60 Days $32 Total of 3.5GB over 60 days —— this option is worse than the Voice, SMS, Data sim

        • Voice, SMS, Data SIM which was the first offer of this Starhub roaming SIM.

          3 Day - 1GB - $5
          30 Day - 1.2GB - $10
          30 Day - 2.4GB - $15
          30 Day - 3.6GB - $20
7 Day - 10MB - $1 — this is very important, this is the hack you use to extend the expiry date of your data plan

The last option is important for extending the expiry date of your data plan, the expiry date will be added on top of your current one.
i.e you can buy 3D/1GB/$5 + $7D/10MB/$1 for just $6 you will get 1GB for your 10days trip. If you need more data you can buy another 3D/1GB/$5 and you will now have 13 days to use your 2GB

To keep the SIM active, $10 topup will extend your sim by 120 days and this doesn't stack, your 120days expiry date will be counted from the topup date, so if you do 2x $10 top up you don't get 240days expiry but only 120days from the date of the last topup.

    • 100GB is local data, this is roaming.

    • dyl's reply is the real answer.

This is targeted at overseas use.

What you're talking about is exclusively for local use in Singapore only. None of the inclusions can be used overseas.

  • Is this a data only SIM or does it come with a number?

Do I need a dual SIM phone or second phone? I like to keep my primary number to receive texts (sometimes important for work)

    • SIM has Singapore number, it's free to receive sms but if you receive or call using this sim outside Singapore you will be charged a very expensive roaming rate. It's best just to use it for data.

  • Working flawlessly in Beijing. Roams flawlessly to China Mobile, and no great firewall of China in place (FB/insta/Google/whatsapp work without any issue).

    Love this sim!

      • Tethering/Hotspoting with Android is ok, I don't use iPhone so can't advise you on that. If crappy iOS disable hotspot, your only way is either get a USB Wifi or use any old Android phone to tether.

      • No sorry. I have a Kindle I can tether if you really want to know, but probably can't tell much with that?

      • I hotspotted via wifi for my wife's phone and it worked without issue. She'd ran her balance down to zero and needed to purchase another data pack. Worked without any issue!

        • don't topup more than what you need, just enough to buy data pack in case you overused your data, you will not lose much credit money. If you have already bought the first pack with long date i.e 30days pack, it is now cheaper to just buy the 1GB/$5/3Days.

if you use much data, it maybe better to get the Data only sim with 2GB/day plan or just get a local SIM, but for China you will need this sim to bypass the Great Firewall.

          • @samehada: Local sims for china can be very expensive and cumbersome. This sim is so much better in my experience. Unless of course you need a phone number for taxis and take out

  • hi guys,

Glad, I found this post and other post (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/316426) as i'll be heading to South Korea and Japan soon and I'll transit in Singapore.

Just wondering, which one should I choose? the Happy Prepaid Sim card or Data-only Sim card? I'll spend 15 days in total.

    Thanks.

    • unless you need voice or sms, choose data-only and use whatsapp/facetime/imessage/wechat etc instead to communicate

      this summary may help

  • Used mine in Singapore for 2 days no problems. Now in Thailand and can't connect. Do I need to change APN settings or something?

    Update:
I just realised my data roaming was off.

  • Just bought one today 18-10-18, just sharing my experience, just go to any UOB currency exchange counter and ask for the StarHub Travel simcard. Its very easy and the lady will help you through everything while setting up your phone. Just make sure your phone is unlocked to enjoy this simcard.

Someone said above that you need $8 credit to use this is not true. I asked the lady there and she said that this sim is data only, no credit is on it. And this sim cannot be used to call or sms, only data. So use whatsapp or any other messengers to text or call.

  • $32 option is no longer available, $50 option may be a good alternative as it gets you 2 x 5gb/1 month data packs ($25) each

    • Yes I had to buy $50 one as they don't sell $32 sim anymore at uob airport. The SingTel next window keeps telling me they have better product. Is this true? Anyone can clarify this?'

      • Maybe it's a better product — for them! LOL

  • Bought Haspy sim $15 and got value $15 + 2.2gb. I switch on my roaming when I was in Malaysia last week but couldn't used the data. I tried to set up APN but got message Starhub Prepaid APN not signed in. Anyone can help please? Bts I m in spore now,

  • Just noticed that the $32 2Gb I bought in Singapore back in 2018 can be used in Canada.
Will top ups work on expired sims and if so can it be reactivated without going to Singapore again?

    • If its expired you probably have to get a new sim..

    • were u able to topup an expired sim?

      • Will find out soon

  • Seems like there are new data rates now.
Does it still work like before in that buying a new data package extends the expiry of all your existing data?

    • Going to Singapore in 2 weeks, any updates on this?

      • Reporting back. I have tested and each pack does indeed add data and expiry time to the existing total.

        • Should I be getting the data only or voice data sms sim?

  • Anyone find starhub prepaid data pack value has been getting worse these days?
You pay $25 for 4gb data in 4 weeks. If you need more data it's quite expensive. Say if I want to stay in Japan for 4 weeks and I probably need 8 to 10gb as I rely on data for all communication and map direction. Local sim costs less and gives you unlimited data.

    • That's why my starhub sim is now in the bin. Not worth it anymore.

      • What are other options?

        • Simple, I don't need internet while traveling anymore, either use the free wifi at shopping centre to do some map search or use offline google maps.

Or if you want to keep sticking to your phone then get a local sim.

If you need to contact your friends when no free wifi around and you just lost sight of each other, bring a walkie talkie. Most of the time both of us just within the proximity of a walkie talkie i.e park or shopping centre.

          • @samehada: it's getting worse now. you need a sim in bali to use taxi apps to hail ubers. i tried without one and it was horrible trying to get around.

            • @belongsinforums: get a local sim if you really need one. I rented motobike in Bali so not really big deal for me. Petrol is dirt cheap there because of gvt subsidy. That is why GoJek (similar to Grab and Uber) is quite cheap.

  • Can someone confirm the $32 2GB/day deal is still on?

  • Would not recommend. This is still available but my mates and I are regretting it as so far we got 3G in Malaysia, Taiwan and South Korea.

    • It was perfect in japan last year.
