Intrusive Video Adverts on Mobile OzBargain

Since upgrading to Android from Windows Phone I have discovered to my horror these annoying video ads when I browse the site. Difficult to close them and they monopolise half of my browser screen on mobile. Don't see it on computer site due to adblocker.

  • We've had this reported before and it seems to be an ad malware picked up from other sites. If you close Chrome, clear cache, restart phone it should fix things up.

There shouldn't be intrusive video ads showing on OzBargain but if you do see them, please do a screenshot/grab the link if possible.

Go to My Account > Settings > Banner Ads and choose your preferred option (e.g. No ads)

8 years on OzB and just now discovered this was a feature!
Maybe I will leave it turned on as I'm happy to give back a little to the site that gives me so much :)

  • Since upgrading to Android from Windows

Nice. I might make the transition soon

    • I was pretty happy with WP8 platform and found many workarounds due to the lack of apps.

  • Install AdBlockerUltimate. Works great for me. I'm happy to support a site by seeing ads but only polite unobtrusive ones. Not the sort you describe.

    • brave?

  • Why not use an adblocker on your phone? DNS66 will work on all phones. So will AdGuard. There are plenty of different options.

    • If you have root the best option is Ad Away IMO since it uses no additional resources by using hosts lists to block content across the entire device.

You cannot get it on Google Play because the worlds largest advertising business does not want you blocking ads this way.

      • Sorry. I have a Xiomi no root. Not game enough to root whilst still under warranty.

Install Brave browser. Basically Chrome with ad blocker built in

    • Perfect. Exactly what I need. Thanks.

While I'm a big fan of ad and script blocking, it's important to recognise sites like ozbargain can benefit from ads to support the site. Chrome for Android has improved a lot over the years, and you can disable auto media playback, and block ads, without additional add-ons or apps.

    • Adblocking by the worlds largest internet advertising and tracking business, you're funny!

      • Lol. True. But OP only asked about video ads. Some people don't care about the privacy implications of things they've never thought about and don't know exist. Chrome has some simple options for people with basic needs.

    • I do try to support certain websites and disable ad block on them for that purpose. It's those obtrusive auto-play video ads that hijack my screen and use my data that annoy me the most and I find are unacceptable. Simple banner ads are permissible.

  • Ghostery browser is another option.
